I've just seen Biden introduce president Zelensky as President Putin....its just beyond sad now, surely this has to be a big sway to stepping down?

Also well into her seventies and would be over 80 at the end of the term if elected.

Are there no competent politicians under the age of 70 in the USA any more?

There are quite a few strong candidates for the Dems.

Unfortunately the only person who is basically guaranteed to easily beat Trump according to literally all the polls isn't interested in running, and that's Michelle Obama (who was actually also more popular than Barack Obama).

Emmanuelll · 12/07/2024 11:52

This is becoming absolutely ridiculous now - Biden has to step down - he is making it easier for that populist moron, evil Trump to get back into the White House. It can't happen.

He should stand down.
If he doesn't, Trump will win and he'll nuke us all.

What? Like he did last time? Okaaaaay

Does Hillary Clinton not want to try for president again? Or is she not allowed to or something?

They will need to choose someone who they feel will beat Trump.

He could have given a politician answer - avoid the question and say something related. Biden was welcoming. We had a good meeting. Whatever. But not that Biden is on the ball.

But he probably was. Cognitive decline is nuanced. If Biden slept well, was relaxed and was on top form he’s usually sharp as a tac and a very good politician. KS was probably being honest.

Trump makes gaffs ALL the time. ALL the time. We just don’t talk about it much because we know he’s a prize dunce.

Biden, however, should step down and I think it’s ego keeping him there. But also may be to parachute someone in last minute with no hope of them being taken down. That’s wishful thinking though.

Emmanuelll · 12/07/2024 11:59

His ego is keeping him there, and his wife apparently. My dad is 78 and he's a lot like Biden - it's not dementia it's just what happens to people when they get older sometimes.

dottiehens · 12/07/2024 12:07

May be he is becoming a little of what he criticises in Trump. Hypocrisy and dangerous that he stay. Hopefully people vote him out if he does.

Tracker1234 · 12/07/2024 12:11

Why do people keep going on about Michelle Obama. Now Geoge Clooney steps up and people like the look of him... what next Megan Markle??

The Democrats deserve to lose after this mess of their own making. Trump would lose with a reasonable alternative. They dont even need to be brilliant. They had warnings about Joe's health for years and chose to ignore them. Shame on them.

Emmanuelll · 12/07/2024 12:13

Another 4 years of Trump would be very worrying, dangerous even for the world.

Even without his revolting personality, Trump just isn’t a fit politician never mind president. People from his last administration have described him as not having the intelligence for the role and others having to explain things to him in the style of a bed time story.

haveatye · 12/07/2024 12:17

He's obviously incredibly sharp and hardworking for a man in his 80s. But the bar for president should be higher than that.

I agree with this, it seems to me that mental energy tends to decline along with physical energy.

Oh wow, I hadn’t thought of MM. I just bet there are conversations going on in the Sussex household about Meghan chucking her fascinator in the ring.

Would be absolutely fantastic to watch and laugh if she did. C’mon Meg!

It's got to be an existing politician as Reagan was. Gavin Newsoms name keeps coming up. He's governor of California

I find this a bit unfair (not you just generally). Michelle Obama has always said she doesn't want to be a politician so the pressure must be awful to take on a job you never wanted and were clear about not wanting on the back of 'saving the country' rhetoric.

As per a PP we need to be asking where all the good politicians who are Gen X and the older end of the Millennials are?

Why is there a collective failure to launch going on? Is it due to the dominant grip the Biden's, Pelosi's etc. still have in DC?

Good candidates who are roughly 40 - 60 years old should be aplenty now and have high profiles. That doesn't seem to be the case bar a handful and even those don't seem to be given the grooming and backing to be future leaders.

We seem to hear a lot about the very old politicians who have been around since the 1960s or the very young ultra progressive ones like 'the squad'.

I could be wrong about this as I don't live in the US but it's my perception from over this side of the pond.

FinalCeleryScheme · 12/07/2024 13:15

All this stuff about age! Biden’s problem isn’t age, it’s mental deterioration. I would rather have a mentally sharp 80-year-old as President or PM than a mentally sharp 30-year-old. Experience and accrued wisdom matters.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 12/07/2024 13:16

And President Zelensky was as gracious and calm as ever.

Erdinger · 12/07/2024 13:18

He’s not fit for his position but I disagree with comments that he needs to be in a nursing home . Most people his age are independently living and he seems active . I don’t think humans are wired to be in such a high pressure job at his age .

I think Newsom is troublesome because he's California and Harris is too?

So who do you suggest?

justasking111 · 12/07/2024 13:31

I don't think they're looking to middle aged women from the UK for suggestions really ... obviously I've no clue, was just pointing out that there is (apparently) a geographical issue with him and Harris on the same ticket.

As a middle aged woman, my vote is obviously Clooney all the way. 😂

caringcarer · 12/07/2024 13:37

IClaudine · 12/07/2024 08:31

Has any other world leader at NATO suggested Biden steps down @caringcarer?

Edited

Have any other world leaders said he's 'on top of his game' and 'not senile'? I've not heard any other world leaders endorse Biden.

Sceptical123 · 12/07/2024 13:37

Do you know what, maybe this has all been a calculated ploy to enable Kamala Harris to run for the democrats without opposition as she’s obv a better candidate than Biden and it’s to late int eh day to look to anyone else. Perhaps Biden is taking one for the team to ensure she gets voted in and is supported by the more sceptical party members 🤔 stranger things have happened 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sceptical123 · 12/07/2024 13:39

—You can’t get a much bigger gaffe than calling Harris Vice President Trump and Zelensky Putin FGS!

Exactly this. He's a great president and statesman but doing a job like this at 80 plus is a tall order.

According to Starmer, who met him yesterday, he was very much on the ball. Hard to know who to believe.

Starmer can't tell the difference between a man and a woman so I'm really not surprised he can't tell the difference between a cognitively competent person and one that thinks his Granddaughter is his dead son, that Trump is his deputy president and that Zelensky is Putin. 🤷 It's obvious to everyone else.
