Weirdly I'm on a train right now and I could a voice more clearly than others and I look up and it's Matthew Parris.

tobee · 19/06/2024 23:19

*could hear a voice

So they want to make something of Keir's age.

I hope Johnson mentions it - given today is his 60th birthday

Darn, I forgot to send him a card. Has he retired yet?

prettybird · 19/06/2024 23:38

I sometimes imagine a semi circle of MPs - instead of an opposite chamber like we have.

Have you not seen the custom built Scottish Parliament? Wink

It was designed to encourage collaborative working and the voting system was designed to ensure that there would need to be coalitions as no one party would win a majority (a cynic might suggest that that was to ensure that the SNP were never in power that worked well Wink).

The committee system was supposed to provide oversight over legislation as the committees are formed according to the proportions of seats won by all the parties (both constituency MSPs and list MSPs). Unfortunately that didn't take into account that one party might indeed win an overall majority Confused, so therefore there is a risk of insufficient oversight Sad

I enjoyed his book “Great Parliamentary Scandals”. However it needs updating considerably to deal with this government!

Notonthestairs · 19/06/2024 23:41

I know the polls are relatively consistent but there is so much effort invested in describing a Tory wipe out.

So much so I suspect they are attempting to suppress the vote.

There are two (miserable) weeks to go.

Who knows what fuck up are to come.

What matters is whether people turn out on the day.

tobee · 19/06/2024 23:59

When I looked up @bombastix I half expected to see Giles Brandreth; they obviously share similar old school Tory tones to my ear! I think Matthew Parris probably thought he was talking in his "train voice" but I could hear him very clearly 😀 Sadly he was not giving his opinion on the current state of the Conservative Party!

He was dressed very nicely in summer dinner jacket, you know - a cream jacket, and a dicky bow. I however am dressed as a scruffy socialist in ripped jeans trying to pretend I'm not really a woman in her mid fifties!

I pop out to choir and you close one thread and get to page 5 of another!
Cat tax payment - Perdy is so bored with this election she plans to fluff out her floof and sleep until it’s over.

🤣🤣🤣🤣
Perdy gives zero fucks who looks at what. She has no interest in anyone’s opinion of her.

tobee · 20/06/2024 00:39

Ooh lots of far flung Sunak threaders tonight- Japan and Iceland

@tobee - for some weird reason, I don't like using my iPhone emojis on Mumsnet - maybe because I'm so old school and it originally wasn't possible. Wink

Plus I much prefer Hmm and Confused to 😒 and - well, there isn't a direct equivalent to Confused. Maybe 😖 or 🤯 or 🤔 depending on the context Grin (or 😂).

I do like 🐿️ though. 😂

I read a tweet today that said Tory voters would vote for a 🐿️ if it had a blue rosette on and it really made me laugh. 😁

Ohanother1goodbye · 19/06/2024 19:17

Those polls just show how unreliable polls are.

No pollster has ever asked me what I think, or anyone I know.

I think it will be a hung parliament after the next election, But Jeremy Corbyn's puppet has alienated everyone, so Sunak will do a coalition with Reform and Farage will be Prime Minister.

You heard it here first.

So let’s quantify this. How many seats do you expect the Conservative Party to get and how many do you expect Reform to get?

And how does Farage end up PM?

Evenstar · 20/06/2024 01:38

Checking in with my cat tax, off to a festival tomorrow so not sure how much I will be checking in, look forward to catching up at some point. The cat is wondering how many more photos he has to endure before the Tories are gone 🙄

I wish to apologise, I was ambushed by a name change, unfortunate thing to happen.
If there was any confusion, I am sorry to be the cause of it.

Morning - thanks for the new thread @DuncinToffee.

2 weeks 😮

Do we have to take our cats with us in two weeks time so we can have a photo of them at the polling station?

Saucery · 20/06/2024 06:32

Some strategically placed in the booths to do a Cat Slap with their murder mittens if people try and tick the wrong box?

NoDishiForRishi · 20/06/2024 07:08

I do have my dearly departed dogs old pram (her legs went bless her) not sure how keen the cat would be on a trip out in it though... 😂

We had our first Mail Drop yesterday! DH got something from labour through the post, we assume because he's in a union as he's not a member of any political party and labour did a leaflet drop, so I finally have my poster which will go up today I think!

Not a jot from any other candidates yet. The current Tory incumbent is sticking pretty much resolutely to the more affluent areas, yet to see him do any door knocking round here. In fact I think I've only ever seen him round this way once and that was to cut a ribbon on a redeveloped block of council flats. He was on the select committee that got rid of Boris Johnson, which was extra funny as he only got in because of Boris and bloody brexit and he spent a good year dragging the silly sod up here for photo ops. He then announced he wouldn't be standing here at this election and had to come slinking back because no bugger else would have him. I'm looking forward to him getting booted right out.

newnamethanks · 20/06/2024 07:14

Canvassed yesterday by someone combining evangelical Christianity with Vote Tory. I was less than pleased.

Zonder · 20/06/2024 07:32

I sometimes imagine a semi circle of MPs - instead of an opposite chamber like we have. Imagine those with more similar beliefs in the middle of the semi circle - and then the ones with the further right beliefs go towards the right and the more left ones go further to the left. We seem to be heading towards something where there are going to be just a few Tory MPs but their beliefs might well be somewhere away from the centre ground.

You've also perfectly described the European Parliament in Brussels here @CassieMaddox I always thought it was much nicer.

@Thingscanonlygetsunk I knew it was you!

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 20/06/2024 07:33

Morning all. Very occasional poster, long-time lurker, can't find the cat so trawled the archives and decided you can all have the very noble-looking Jake looking out to a new horizon.

Is there a length-limit to names? Thinking of lifesabitchandthenyoudiebutjustoccasionallyalongcomesaonce-in-a-lifetimechancetofeelpositiveaboutthefuture... will that track?

@SippingDownRakiAndReadingMaynardKeynes best name ever, in a land of excellent names. Impossible to read without singing!

edited to add the noble horse's name.
