I really hope that's true, would be such a boost for democracy!

BIossomtoes · 30/05/2024 08:41

Very astute. And you’re absolutely right.

In the meantime, Sunak’s so desperate for the grey vote that he’s sending Mrs Sunak into care homes.

I understand that but the optics feature heavily. All this Abbott guff is unnecessary and could have been quietly sorted out to everyone's satisfaction. But no. Some twonk has decided it's a better look for Labour to alienate thousands of potential voters by bashing lefty Corbyn-loving Diane. It's not a good look hence Starmer's hasty backtracking yesterday.

BIossomtoes · 30/05/2024 08:46

Do you not think whoever orchestrated it knows it’s not a good look and that’s why they did it?

SerendipityJane · 30/05/2024 08:48

Some twonk has decided it's a better look for Labour to alienate thousands of potential voters by bashing lefty Corbyn-loving Diane.

Is that true ? Remember for a majority of people the whole argument for ousting the tories is not because of concerns about this MP or that MP or this sex scandal or that sex scandal. It's the cost of living. State of the NHS. Education and so on.

And that same argument is why the think they can get away with it.

I'm not justifying it. I'm not agreeing with it. But it's a drop in the ocean really.

Even if 100,000 people suddenly didn't vote Labour but Tory instead, would that give us a Tory government ?

IClaudine · 30/05/2024 08:49

I think Diane Abbott should be allowed to stand. She'll win the seat of course and it will calm things down. She will only be a backbencher now, so can't really harm Starmer.

Have you seen the candidate for Chingford and Woodford Green has been told she can't stand? Faiza Shaheen. I am sure she was on Question Time once. Anyway, she liked some iffy tweets and apparently tweeted supporting the Greens.

I feel a bit sorry for her, but anyone standing now, especially candidates who have never been MPs, need to really clean their Twitter feed of anything remotely controversial.

Starmer is being pretty ruthless.

Oh, that's a very touching photo Blossomtoes, I expect I'll vote Tory now I've seen evidence of such compassion. Passed a lengthy queue for a food bank last week. I look forward to her appearing with a tray of tasty snacks and a photographer.

IClaudine · 30/05/2024 08:51

@blossomtoes that photo makes me want to vomit.

newnamethanks · 30/05/2024 08:53

Although IClaudine has expressed it better.

Yes, it had that effect on me too for so many reasons. Imagine being a resident in that care home.

Is that Mother Theresa there? I haven't got my glasses on 🤔

newnamethanks · 30/05/2024 09:08

It's the Mrs Thatcher Caring Mode. How lovely. Just as attractive as it ever was.q

Sadly there is some very tough calculating to be done.

Forget how things "look". The only questions are either:

"Will this prevent a voter in <insert somewhere in the red wall> putting an "X" in the Labour box ?"

or

"Will this gain us many votes in <again insert somewhere that isn't London> that we otherwise would nit have gained ?"

At this stage of the game, nothing else matters.

It's a scarily slippery slope though.
Labour are also completely ignoring genocide against muslims. Actively saying anyone speaking out about it will be struck from the party.
I feel very uncomfortable with the sliding towards the worst aspects for votes and warmly welcoming people like Elphicke...

L1ttledrummergirl · 30/05/2024 10:02

I think it's unrealistic to expect every candidate to clean up their profiles.

We are all human, we can all get caught out even with the best of intentions and we all have our off moments where we say and do stupid out of character things. These moments shouldn't define a person.

Is Mrs Sunak standing to be an MP now?

DuncinToffee · 30/05/2024 10:10

Jeremy Hunt's confirms the Tories will keep income tax thresholds frozen until the end of the "allotted period" eg 2028.

It means an effective income tax rise as millions are dragged into paying higher rates by inflation.

Tory attempt to pick a fight with Labour on tax going well

Isn't Mrs Sunak an Indian citizen? Confused

Although technically she could stand as an MP as she's a Commonwealth citizen.

But since when do we have a presidential system whereby we have a "1st couple"? (I made the same complaint when Mr May was interviewed with Theresa May on Breakfast TV Hmm

SerendipityJane · 30/05/2024 10:14

Is Mrs Sunak standing to be an MP now?

She'd have to be a UK citizen.

A much more heart warming picture would have been of her paying some fucking tax instead.

Does that mean Labour are arguing to reduce tax though?

I am struggling to understand what Labour is about at the moment. The "just because they aren't Tories" is running a bit thin for me without any real examples of how they will be raising funds, for example.

The problem us until they have their eyes and minds on the real data - not the fairy stories the tories have been peddling far and wide so long there's no telling what's up or down any more, they are hidebound.

And that's before you get to a media that will demand a costed manifesto down to paperclips from Labour whilst waving a bargeload of bollocks from the Tories through their front pages.

What our MSM do to use is basic abuse. It's like a husband telling his size 8 wife she's fat for years and years and years while people at weightwatchers really don't get it.

fabio12 · 30/05/2024 10:27

But voting blind isn't democracy.

I want to see balls, frankly. They have a huge margin and if they can't even now actually produce an actual costed policy that will have a decent effect I can't see why they'd be better than another party (not tories). It feels like people are swinging between the two popular kids when the nerds in the background might actually have more conversation because they're not obsessed with each other.

That's what I thought so I checked. It seems that as a Commonwealth citizen with ILR which I presume she has Wink, she could stand.

Imagine being able to vote for taxes you won't be paying. It's almost an inverse of the Revolutionary battle cry.

newnamethanks · 30/05/2024 10:32

Awaiting the baby-kissing photo with breathless anticipation.

prettybird · 30/05/2024 10:32

...and supposedly she has voluntarily given up her Non-dom status so does pay tax on what she earns in the UK but that's easily manipulated Hmm

If only we had the Icelandic system where tax paid is a matter of public record Grin
