I downloaded an app on my phone, called Merlin, which identifies bird songs. I’ve been enthralled at the diversity we have visiting the garden. I knew the Robin, blackbird and sparrow by sight and sound, but I hadn’t realised how many other birds are in the neighbourhood. My daughter and one of her friends downloaded it as well . They’ve gone to Portugal for a few days and she said they heard a birdsong, got out their phones, then found it was a man with a whistling toy 😆

Penguinsa · 29/05/2024 18:17

You are most welcome Death though I think Havoc is the thread chef. Just had mozzarella, parma ham and grapes for lunch followed by ginger cake from the bakers. If you don't eat the ham Death Floof loves it.

Great turtle pic MissC

Lovely toad in hole Uman

Just off gardening with DH.

Cattery · 29/05/2024 18:22

I washed the cat’s blanket and was lucky to get it dry in the garden today

MissConductUS · 29/05/2024 18:43

`Welcome, @CurlewKate and thanks for sharing your hot honey news. Is it hot as in spicy or hot as in heated up?

Welcome, @Cattery, and thanks for sharing news of how you have served your feline overlord. I, too, am a cat servant, and you've reminded me that there are some cat beds that need to be washed.

Uman, your pub wedding meals sound good to me and a lot less expensive than what we're spending on DD's reception.

My MIL's funeral is this Saturday morning, and I'm not looking forward to it. For one thing, it's sad. And DH's sister will be there, and I'm sure she'll be salty about not being invited to DD's wedding. She's always been horrible to DH, and DD didn't want to give her a spot on the limited guest list, which we were fine with, but she reportedly took it very badly. They haven't spoken in years. I hope she doesn't cause drama at the funeral.

It's a lovely early summer day here, so the turtles were out sunning. I think this is the first time I've seen the little one on the left.

We've had a lot of heavy rain here recently, meaning that a busy intersection where most of the road surface has been dug up as part of a massive roadwork project has turned into the trenches of Flanders because rain has washed away all the gravel they used to try to level it up until it can be resurfaced properly. I feared I had destroyed my car driving through it last night, but it looks as if all is well. I made a note to myself to avoid that route.

I hung the hummingbird feeder in the tree by the deck but haven't seen any hummingbirds yet. The cicadas are gradually emerging and making their presence heard. They're louder in some parts of the village than others.

MissC that menu looks fantastic. I'd have a very hard time deciding on an option.

I'm off to Aldi as we've run out of several staples. We're having new potatoes and pork tenderloin tonight, with warm broccoli salad.

IWanderedLonely · 29/05/2024 21:36

Miss hope all goes well at your MIL's funeral; when my FIL died in 2018 I dreaded the funeral, as we don't get on with a couple of DH's brothers, but it went smoothly, I think it would be the wrong time and place to cause trouble.Flowers

Penguinsa · 29/05/2024 23:25

Hope your MILs funeral goes as well as it can MissC

Just done 3 hours gardening with DH and filled the green bin and have some for next collection to. Got through quite a lot together. Then had a lovely bath with the rose bath foam.

Have ordered a second green bin from the council which should arrive in up to 10 working days as would mean we can get through things faster. There's a charge but its not too bad.

Gave DS his new ipad and he is using it as well as watching Netflix and making himself many cheese toasties.

Had Chinese takeaway for dinner - had duck pancakes. Floof was open mouthed by me.

The bank had put a hold on my card but phoned and got it reset fine. Also got a form we need from the doctors for DS so that is done.

DD says she keeps dreaming her brother is talking again. She is revising this week and just told me in the holidays she will go away with her boyfriend to the Canaries AI work in her punting job and then go interrailing with some boys from 3 schools back around Europe, Berlin, Paris, Vienna, Prague and a few other European cities.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/05/2024 01:11

Keeping busy, Penguinsa! Good for you! 👏
I need to get to mine and take a peek. Planted a bit of spinach and lettuce last week. We've had so much rain since so I wouldn't be surprised if the seeds floated away. Your lunch sounds good! I did a Costco shop then we had bbq chicken, grapes tomatoes, grapes, strawberries, garlic naan then I had a latte and a piece of maple pecan coffee cake for dessert once dc fell asleep for nap time. It's a late one and now 5pm so I should wake Havoc and get out for a walk. Some blue sky and windy, but apparently t-showers and hail in the valley earlier.

Miss, will keep you and family in my thoughts this weekend. 💐
@CurlewKate have you been on this thread before? I recognize your iser name. ☺️
Death, any time!
Umam, nice to see you pop back.
Math, I like the sound of your meal, too! Glad car is good.

sproutsandparsnips · 30/05/2024 21:02

Lovely looking cake Miss - will think of you this weekend.
You've been productive Penguinsa! I I had a day off today and went to a 630 swimming class. Got me up so tried to be productive - changed the beds, did the shopping, cleaned, took clothes to the charity shop, blitzed DS2's room . I always find once you start there's more and more to do!
There were 4 goldfinches on the feeders today - usually only have sparrows and starlings.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/05/2024 22:39

Good for you, Sprouts! 👏
I just did a blitz of cleaning as well. 😅

Penguinsa · 30/05/2024 23:02

Thanks Havoc Your meal sounds lovely as ever.

Thanks Sprouts well done on getting all that done, impressive.

The extra green bin I ordered at 10.50pm last night arrived before 8am this morning which is brilliant. Need the sticker to arrive to get them to empty it but at least we can fill it. Other green bin already full. So more gardening this weekend weather permitting and I have also booked a visit to Sandringham Estate, included with our Historic House membership and I booked afternoon tea for DH and I there.

DD was revising then went to cinema and a vegan restaurant with a friend. She also booked the holiday with her boyfriend for the summer, going to Kefalonia. She will book an interrailing trip around European cities with some boys from her old school soon for end of summer and will work punting as well.

DS has been watching TV and also downloaded an art app. I've ordered some things for DS and some for us.

Hello all ..
Lovely catching up on everyone's news.

I had a bit of a busy stressful week and a bit.

Lat week mam wasn't well but insisted she was fine 😠!

Well ...I made her a GP appointment which she didn't want !
I said to her to accept it to make my life easier incase I have to try and get her an appointment over the BH weekend .

We have a fabulous GP practice.
I spoke to the receptionist at 3.30pm.

A telephone appointment was arranged and a GP spoke to mam at 4.10 pm who asked her to come in at 5.05pm !

I got her up there and she has a chest infection !

( I tried to hold back on the " I told you so" to mam 🤣🤣)

I don't think mam understands how easily these things can go downhill quickly and end up in pneumonia in the elderly .

She is still not 100 💯 right but we have another already pre-booked appointment for something else on Tuesday , so at least she can be checked over again.

I had a surprise visit from ds2 the other day !

He messaged me to say he had finished work and was going to pop in ...

I am afraid my first response was
🤷‍♀️🤔🤔🤔🤔 !! Why ?!

He came and said it was because he had a few hours to kill before meeting a friend and he thought he would pop in .

I then thought.....ahhhhh he has missed his mummy after all....

But then it turns out he had a rip in the crutch of his jeans and knew he had left some trousers here to change into and this house was nearer than him going back to his flat !!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!

He then asked if I was any good at sewing !!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!

Still , it was nice to sit and have a chat and laugh with him while he was here....and if course my little hug and kiss when he got here and leaving 😍😍!

Penguinsa · 31/05/2024 00:24

Well done on looking after your Mum Bizzey and getting her to the doctors.

Just watching Race Around the World, they've been to Japan, South Korea and now in Vietnam heading for Cambodia.

bizzey · 31/05/2024 12:46

I really wished I hadn't posted late last night about the sweet impromptu visit I had had from ds earlier in the week .....and about how sweet it was ...because ...

I had another impromptu visit from ds at 2.20 am this morning 🤣🤣🤣!!

Door knocked ...I thought I must have imagined it ...

Knocked again ....heart pounding now !

I put light on and went down and looked out of frosted little bit of glass ....
And there is ds waving to me 🤣🤣...

He had lost/misplaced his keys but could ring me to warn me he was outside as his phone was dead !

I said that is fine.. I gave him my charger and made him a bed up on setée ...because . ...errr I still hadn't finished all my sorting out so beds were not prepared !

I told him we can't do nothing now , and that things will seem much easier to sort out in the morning.

This morning his friend face timed him ....holding up his keys 🤣.

I doubt I will ever know what happen ...but I was just glad that he knew he could always come home at no matter what time if there was a problem .

Annoying thing was ...he didn't do " the family special knock " on the door ..so that threw me.

He said he was in a bit of panic /upset .

Hopefully now he will do as he is told and get some bloody copies cut and leave here in the hallway drawer.

I said ..if it happened over a BH weekend or something...it would be very difficult to contact anyone to get the spare keys .

Youngsters always think ....ohh that won't happen to me ....until it does ...and then they think . .oh maybe had was right after all .!

All well that ends well ....and I got lots more hugs and kisses ...and even an "I love you " 😙!🥰🥰!

🤣🤣

bizzey · 31/05/2024 17:51

Forgot to say ..hope the weekend goes as smoothly as it can MissC

mathanxiety · 31/05/2024 20:17

Quite exciting, but the hummingbirds are back and pleased to see the feeder in the tree.

The weekend is going to be hot here, after a weird cold snap. I had to close all the windows I've had open since the last of the winter cold gave way to spring.

My downstairs neighbour is moving out today so my car is parked out of the way of the moving truck. I'm going to sweep old leaves and general debris off my deck tomorrow without worrying about ruining her deck seating or having bits land in her hair. My deck is immediately above hers.

MissC - thinking of you this weekend, and hoping everything will be ok.

Umanresources · 31/05/2024 21:27

MissC hope everything goes well for you tomorrow.

HildaTablet · 31/05/2024 21:40

Thinking of you and your DH for tomorrow MissC.

Penguinsa · 31/05/2024 21:48

Glad you sorted that Bizzey

All the best for tomorrow MissC

Lovely hummingbird Math

Just been swimming. DS is now watching Lego Ninjago and DD has been revising. DS had a bath when we were out and found my conditioner on the floor. 🤔Think he must put conditioner on in industrial quantities and walks to sink to do hair and must have dropped some enroute. Floof was on DSs bed and we opened the curtains to the garden and Floof purred. Every time I say the word food Floof arrives at 100mp hour trilling.

MissConductUS · 01/06/2024 01:22

Thanks, Hilda.

Penguinisa, the idea that cats are picky eaters is just marketing from the pet food companies. Every cat I've ever owned loved to eat.

DH went to pick up DS's suit at the cleaners, and since It was near the posh bakery, got us all cupcakes. Except for DD, who wanted a New York Black and White Cookie.

I took a bereavement day to do some things I'd normally do on Saturday. DD is concerned that she'll get stuck talking to DH's sister and catch the resentment about not getting invited to the wedding. I told her that there would likely be a lot of other people to talk to.

Oh, Miss. i love b&w cookies. I think the very best i've had were in Las Vegas from one of the hotels that used to have a great cafe with a bakery counter. (Red Rock hotel). Sadly, looks like they changed that resto now.

bizzey · 01/06/2024 17:40

My little friend having a siesta in my very overgrown grass at the bottom of the garden !

Didn't flinch when she saw me ...just looked up ...and that was it !

Her look was a bit of disgust , that I had disturbed her though !🤣

Great pic, Bizzey!

MissConductUS · 01/06/2024 19:54

Lovely pictures, Bizzey. She does look quite relaxed.

We're back from my MIL's funeral. It was lovely. There was a brief graveside service, then we and the rest of the guests gathered in a meeting room in the church for a Quaker-style remembrance, where we all told stories and relayed memories about her life. Then, we had a casual lunch in the church hall.

And there was no drama for the simple reason that DH's sister did not attend. I asked her grandson during lunch how she was, and he said that her back was bothering her, and it was too uncomfortable for her to sit in the car for the hour it would have taken her and her husband to drive down for the services. I have no idea if it's true or if she just couldn't be arsed. The wedding would have been an additional 45 minutes from where she lives, so she wouldn't have come for that either.

On our way home, we stopped at a posh ice cream place for dessert. I'm sure my MIL would have approved. It's nice to have the whole thing over.

Glad the funeral went Ok MissC

Great picture Bizzey

DH and I did gardening today and filled the second green bin, about 2 hours 45 mins and then had a nice bath. Had a kebab from the kebab shop afterwards with lamb shish, mushroom, onions, peppers and a salad with lettuce, onions and red cabbage and an apple juice. Collected some more rose bath foam, Floof's food and food from Sainsburys. For lunch had chicken and lamb koftas and stuffed vine leaves.

DD has been revising and DS watching TV. He made himself hot dogs in a saucepan and appears to have washed and dried some of his own clothes. He has taken the blackboard and pens I got him before.
