Looks lovely Dandy Hope you are having a good time. It was Lundy that first started my love of islands.

Just off gardening with DH. Done my bit of medical form and changed bedding. Floof helped with form by sitting on it trying to knock pen as I wrote with his big clumsy paw. Thought it was a cat game.

MissConductUS · 04/08/2024 21:45

Welcome, @Apolloneuro, and thanks for sharing your summer holidays news. This is indeed a kinder, gentler corner of MN. I'm a bit surprised we don't get more people barging in and telling us off about whatever, but everyone seems to respect the kinder vibe of this thread. Thanks for providing your location. I'm in New York and we have people from all over, but the UK is the most common location for people on the thread.

Havoc, sorry for the misunderstanding about your ice cream place. I wonder how they make it on the spot. We had a ice cream maker when I was a child and it took hours.

Hilda, a lot of the covid tests on the market are rubbish for detecting the new strains. So that may be what you have. It's a bit early for the flu to be circulating in the northern hemisphere, but it can happen.

Math, it's hot and stormy here too. We had heavy thunderstorms yesterday and an inch of rain, with more coming later tonight. We had to get a takeaway last night and may not be able to cook outside tonight, either.

DD has arrived at her new location in Indiana. She and SiL are staying in a hotel until they can move into her new apartment on Thursday.

My trusty Miele washing machine made a grinding noise when I tried to start a load earlier today, so I canceled the cycle and checked the trap and the seal. Both looked fine. I suspect we may be buying a new one. This one is about 12 years old. I do one load every night and a few extra on the weekends, so I guess we've gotten our money's worth if we have to replace it.

We do a load a night (plus extra) too Miss I did 4 today (two lots of bedding) plus another 2 of essential things DC wanted washing before we go away tomorrow.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/08/2024 22:40

Miss, my washer is an LG circa 2010, I think. Fingers crossed it keeps going! Lots of laundry here, too!!!

The ice cream is made using liquid nitrogen. It was first time I had seen it, but the shop has been around for 7 years here. 😵‍💫 Since I'm lactose intoletant I don't seek out ice cream shops, so explains why I didn't know about them. Most places have dismal dairy-free or lactose-free selections, if at all. Except la casa gelato, which I've posted about before.

Did a couple of hours gardening with DH. Had a bath then had egg sandwiches and scone and clotted cream and strawberry jam and a milky coffee. Now have to fast for 12 hours until my medical tomorrow morning at Nuffield for new job at 10.30am.

Just catching up on Olympics. Have a lovely holiday Helena Hope you can get washing machine solution quickly MissC

Good evening

I've been away from MN for several years. It's so nice to find this thread continues on!

We grilled hamburgers for dinner tonight and gave now settled in to binge watch Breaking Bad. My first time and my partners 15567 😂

bizzey · 05/08/2024 01:00

Ohhh my word !
So much to catch up on 🤣😲🌹.

Where to start.....
Think it has to be the ice cream 🍦🍧🍦🍨!
When ds3 was little ....he wanted be be " an ice cream man " 😍

I bought him a little ice cream maker and he sold ice cream to nannie and grandad!
They paid way over the top rate for it !
£2 for plop of ice-cream ...that you would have to squint to see it ....let alone taste it ..😍🤣🤣!

Best bot of all was a few years later...we were on holiday...and a ice-cream van had his name on it ..

We took lots of photos!

He also tried to make crisps ...yeah.....that machine was not worth the bother ....tasty though ...but cheaper and easier to buy in the shop. 🤣

bizzey · 05/08/2024 01:05

I am actually having a shuddering thought at all I went through in making ice cream and crisps....

Who the hell slices potatoes to cook in the oven.....when you can just buy a bag 🤣

bizzey · 05/08/2024 01:09

@Penguinsa ... following...but .
I thought remote island... meant...well sort of outer isles of Scotland or something....and I had been thinking about your beautiful penguin tiles that we had followed your story with...

But oh my...a passport is needed ?!

bizzey · 05/08/2024 01:11

Ohh and I have got BPPV which is very annoying!

mathanxiety · 05/08/2024 04:49

I've been quite the social butterfly this weekend. Baby shower yesterday and book group get together today. As usual, we stopped discussing the book about fifteen minutes in and spent four hours nattering instead.

DD found her trusty recipe for Victoria sponge, so I suspect she'll bake one when the weather cools off.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/08/2024 04:54

Bizzey, glad you popped by, but sorry about the vertigo. I hope it resolves for you soon!

Cooked up lamb chops and corn on the cob for dinner. Had hummus, naan and a nice salad along side. Kiwi, strawberries and grapes for dessert and a bit of chocolate. Feeling quite food content.... 😊

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/08/2024 04:55

Math, send me a slice? 😄

DandyDandylion · 05/08/2024 07:52

@MissConductUS I have started trying to buy Miele as other brands are getting less easy to take apart and mend. In the UK you can call Miele out and they will fix most problems. I also have a local washing machine repair man who thinks Bosch are the best washers and again he can repair most issues.

@Penguinsa you have reminded me that I must have a cream tea whilst I am in the south west. I don’t want to start a fight but it has to be cream then jam for me, which I think is the Devon way?

@SecretWitch I loved breaking bad, once I got over how violent it is. As with most things the first season is the best.

I love a Victoria sandwich, but lemon drizzle is my favourite, so long as it’s not too artificially sweet. We have been to a few of the open gardens this year. For those who don’t know, these are private gardens, opened once or twice a year for a small entry fee. Proceeds including refreshment sales all go to charity. I have had a very tasty slice of homemade cake at each event, usually served to me by a cheery WI volunteer.

Apolloneuro · 05/08/2024 08:44

Morning everyone

@DandyDandylion definitely cream then jam! You’ll be given very stern looks in Devon if you do it the other way 😂

I haven’t been to see my aunt in Vancouver Island, but her life on Facebook looks amazing.

Yesterday I did some baking. I’m getting into if after years, having treated myself to a kenwood on Prime day.

I made a strawberry tray bake - cakey batter with sliced strawberries on the top. It tasted better than it looked.

Today we’re planning a family camping (mobile home for me!) trip to France, for next year, with daughter, sil and two little granddaughters.

Have a lovely day everyone.

Apolloneuro · 05/08/2024 17:23

Careful what you say @Mumtobabyhavoc This is a serious issue in the South West of England 😂

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/08/2024 17:57

Apollo, yes, I've discovered. FWIW, I've never had clotted cream. I've never seen it here. I eat scones plain, but if warm might put butter on them. I'd only try jam if the scone was plain, I think. 🤔

bizzey · 05/08/2024 18:11

Hummm 🤔🤔🤔🤔....
I must be a Cornish gal then 🤣🤣🤣!!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/08/2024 18:20

The clotted cream looks like a scoop of ice-cream in the pics in the link I posted. How thick is it????

DandyDandylion · 05/08/2024 18:41

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/08/2024 18:20

It is spreadable like butter but thicker. You spread it as thickly as you prefer (I only like a small amount) then a dollop of fresh, high quality strawberry jam on top. I only do this once a year on holiday but you must try it at least once. If you can’t get clotted cream I suppose you could whip some double cream instead.

You and I can never be friends 😂

Penguinsa · 05/08/2024 18:59

Welcome back SecretWitch

Sorry you have BPPV Bizzey good to have you back.

Love lemon drizzle cake too Dandy

Lovely food Havoc Clotted cream is very thick, much thicker than whipped cream. Not sure if you could stand your spoon in it thick but close if not - need to do more testing but have had 3 lots in 48 hours so need to stop my scones. Are quite addictive.

Had my medical this morning and bloods done and pretty much all fine but eyesight was terrible and the breathing test wasn't great (310 peak flow after about 10 attempts to get it higher). I think the breathing will get through. Eyesight need to get checked anyway as tamoxifen damages eyes and chemo damaged and the one side I could only read 1 letter, the other was about 4 lines. I normally manage without anything though have sunglasses at -1.75 each side from 20 odd years ago. Don't drive which helps and its only in darkness have issues. So have booked in for tomorrow and after that hopefully drive up to Norfolk to see a house, maybe beach and maybe seafood platter though depends on timing.

bizzey · 05/08/2024 19:02

Forgot to say ....we had mam's " big " birthday " yesterday!

85 !

I bought her a congratulations card instead of a birthday card as a joke 🤣🤣!!

She requested a small birthday party if just me, brother and my boys....

People just kept arriving all afternoon as she had forgotten that she had told them all to pop by !!

Ds1 and I were desperately trying to make the food stretch out 🤣..

What should have been 5... ..

Turned into a big gathering of 20 🤣🤣🤣 !

Penguinsa · 05/08/2024 19:12

Happy Birthday to your Mum Bizzey
