Best wishes to your mum on her birthday, Bizzey

Here's a quick update on the Miele washing machine—it's tot, kaput, and finished. I tried running a cycle last night with nothing in it, and within minutes, the alarm went off, and it started leaking water on the floor. Fortunately, it wasn't that much water and a few beach towels mopped it up.

At 12 years old, it isn't worth fixing, so DH called our Miele dealer this morning. The only one they had for quick delivery was their most expensive model, but we took it rather than waiting a week or more. It's coming on Wednesday. On the plus side, it has a touch screen, 24 cycles, Wi-Fi connectivity, and automatic detergent dispensing, so we're doing a big upgrade in the laundry room.

Sorry your washing machine couldn't be fixed miss C. Your new washing machine sounds amazing. Can it fold the clothes too? 🤣

We are having a slow day here. DS and I just playing and chilling. May pop to an outdoor play activity in a bit before swimming lessons.

Happy Birthday to your Mum bizzy.

Havoc- Clottef cream is not like any other cream. It has a high fat content and is absolutely rich and delicious.

Glad most of the tests were ok Penguinsa. Think you deffo need an eye test.

Apolloneuro · 06/08/2024 12:46

Weirdly I love doing laundry. Your new washer sounds exciting @MissConductUS

We have our 4 year old granddaughter with us today. Lots of fun playing.

Have a great day everyone.

Umanresources · 06/08/2024 14:42

@MissConductUS I have a Bosch fridge freezer, washing machine, double oven and dishwasher. I’ll admit they were all bought at different times but chosen so that they would be able to communicate with each other. (My family don’t know that’s the reason I chose them all!) 😂

I have a water flosser finally, years after trying one at my dentist’s house. He and his family were personal friends and he thought it would be funny not to tell me how it worked. Actually it was pretty funny to my 19 year old soaked self!

The talk of clotted cream had my mouth watering, so as not to unduly upset anyone, I put cream first on one half of the scone and jam first on the other. I’m a well balanced Libran obviously. I also found a recipe to make clotted cream, but it doesn’t look very appealing.

Hi Apollo, I’m a retired teacher living in NW UK. I still get the anxiety feeling at the beginning of September, when people are returning back to school. I also have nightmares about not having planned for lessons and the headteacher walking into my classroom. I have been retired for 12 years and started a spelling resources website for schools, but now I’ve just put the resources as free downloads, so I can choose what to do with my free time. At the moment it’s pen and ink drawings, reading and watching rubbish on streaming channels. Obviously it’s also reading and chatting on Mumsnet.

MissConductUS · 06/08/2024 16:24

Apollo, I am also a laundry nerd and am quite excited about the new washer. We had a FaceTime call last night with DD, and our SiL, and DD seemed a bit envious about it, which made me realize that she is also a laundry enthusiast. Here's the webpage for the new machine.

Miele WXR860 WCS

I don't know why that page says that there are four washing programs, when there are at least two dozen preprogrammed cycles, including curtains, baby clothes, denims and trainers. I have some dirty trainers I can't wait to wash. You can also modify the cycle options (like adding an extra rinse) and then save it to a list of personal favorites, which I think is a fabulous idea.

Uman, what type of information do the Bosch appliances communicate with each other? We have Bosch appliances here, but they're not as common as Miele. Miele is seen as a very posh brand. I have two of their vacuum cleaners, which I love.

There's not much new to report here. I have my final follow up with the Orthopedist who did my herniated disc replacement on Friday and have booked an appointment with a Podiatrist about having some minor surgery to correct a case of hammertoe, which I think is a result of my many years of running.

It's a misery getting old, innit?

MissC “what type of information do the Bosch appliances communicate with each other?”

They don’t actually communicate, it’s just me imagining they do, at night, when everyone is asleep, in their own little Bosch language 😂 I’m sure I can get medication to help with my fertile imagination.

When we were looking for a new washing machine I did look at the one which had an extra small door for putting in the rogue sock, which gets lost on the way to doing the laundry. I couldn’t justify the extra couple of hundred pounds just for that, especially as my machine has a couple of buttons to press which unlocks the door and interrupts the cycle. Ha, get in there sock!

I was very impressed with this double washing machine, but would have nowhere to put it. Yes I am also a laundry nerd 🤓

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/08/2024 19:04

Uman, did you know trees and other plants communicate with each other? I watched a very interesting program about this on the CBC here.

I love swanky appliances, too. 😍

Bizzey, belated Happy Birthday to your dm. 🥰

Made choc chip pancakes for breakfast and have cleaned up kitchen. Feeling smug that I washed the floor and lower cabinet doors, so having another latte.
Temp only supposed to get up to 24c today, so plan to get Havoc out this afternoon. Have been homebound past two days as tweaked my back a couple weeks ago and really aggravated it from the bouncy park on Saturday. 🙁
Did major clear-up/hack job of garden last night, though.
👍

sproutsandparsnips · 06/08/2024 20:51

Oh loving catching up on everyone's news! I have left it too long to comment but especially loving the food pics/descriptions @Mumtobabyhavoc @Penguinsa!
Speaking of islands though I went to Caldey island for the first time in a good few years a few weeks ago. I love it there. Tenby too is a favourite day trip.
Loving watching the Olympics. Rushed home this evening early to just catch the 1500m final - very exciting.

DandyDandylion · 06/08/2024 21:25

“It's a misery getting old, innit?” - it’s better than the alternative.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/08/2024 21:39

Sprouts, do you mean the women's steeplechase final? That was really great! The Islands you and others have mentioned look awesome - would love to visit them!

Just at a med appt. Saw a gorgeous community garden nearby.

Penguinsa · 07/08/2024 01:33

Would have loved you to join me too Havoc to Norfolk though the weather was very drizzly so not the best day. Had eye tests then walk in rain around Holkham Hall and hot choc then seafood platter with DH from Wells Crab House. Bins are out. Been watching Olympics.

Seeing friend on Thursday at Wisley and lunch there.

IWanderedLonely · 07/08/2024 21:30

Talking to my 9 year old grandson today about the Olympics. He said he'd love to watch people dodging nerf gun bullets, and that he thought he'd be pretty good at it.😍

HelenaJustina · 07/08/2024 21:40

Sprouts we visited Caldey Island last year when holidaying in Pembrokeshire. It was so beautiful, and had such a special feeling.

Penguinsa you weren’t far from us today, we were at Castle Rising and Kings Lynn.

Apolloneuro · 07/08/2024 22:42

Evening new friends.

My day hasn’t been boring so I will whisper that I went to to the theatre with my teenage grandson, to see Aladdin. It was excellent!

@Penguinsa i hope the eye test went well.

Special hard stop a misbehaving child at ten paces stare to fellow teacher @Umanresources

Umanresources · 07/08/2024 22:58

I’ve not watched much of the Olympics, apart from a very local girl Keeley Hodgkinson winning her medal. We also watched the climbing ones, which were very confusing!

I bought some mushroom growing kits for my OH, looking forward to them immensely. I’ve just done a bit of drawing in pen and ink today, very therapeutic.

The teacher stare is so useful in assembly and church settings. 😂

mathanxiety · 08/08/2024 00:02

Penguinsa you certainly don't let the grass grow under you.

I've been watching the Olympics and will turn on Peacock tonight to catch up on Irish finalists in various sports. I missed the rowing and women's boxing wins; not sure they showed those events on NBC.

The weather here has improved dramatically - it's pleasantly warm with a breeze from parts north.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/08/2024 05:18

Fun idea for your dc, Uman! Drawing sounds nice, too.
trying to catch Olympics here and there, too, Math.
Helena, you've given me another place to google.
Iwandered, that's quite funny!
Penguinsa, when will you know results of everything?

Quite warm here and looks to get hotter for next few days. About 27c today. Hazy sky with wildfire smoke drifting in.
Took Havoc to Playland for a few hours this afternoon. Have been meaning to do this since June, but either it's been too hot, or something else comes up. Playland is an amusement park and the last couple of weeks before closing becomes the PNE and is a total gong show... unless you like massive crowds & long lines for rides. 😂 It's tradition, though, and fun. (Even the PNE part because there are lots of concerts and exhibits.)

Lemonsandlemonade · 08/08/2024 07:29

Caldey island is lovely.

https://caldeyislandwales.com

Been looking at booking Blackpool tower for my trip to Blackpool to visit family. It is quite expensive though with tickets required for each bit so if we go we won't go into the ballroom.

Caldey Island

Caldey Island off the coast of Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales is a religious Catholic Island. Tenby is a great holiday tourist spot with great beaches, family friendly, peaceful attractions.

Deathraystare · 08/08/2024 07:55

Gosh! Handbags at dawn over the jam/cream controversy. I will put my 50p in. It has to be jam first so that the cream (clotted) can stick to something. So there!

@@Apolloneuro

Glad you and Grandson enjoyed Aladdin! That is the first name of one of our doctors!

Sounds like you have all been out and about to some lovely places where cream teas and cake have been enjoyed!

@Umanresources
I like Bosch too. When mum became bed bound and I needed to launder more, I got a Bosch washer/dryer from John Lewis and was very impressed by it,

I’m a school business manager and have absorbed the teacher stare by osmosis. Works on all but my own DC…

It used to work on mine when they were primary school aged. I occasionally taught them when covering for absent staff. Son would tell us everything he had done in class, daughter used to say, "Nothing," when asked. Even when I had taught her all day! As adults they are still the same.
The stare has sometimes worked in supermarkets on unruly children too. 😂

MissConductUS · 08/08/2024 16:39

Welcome back, @SecretWitch. I'm so pleased you found us again.

Havoc, we have a Playland near us too. Ours is a historic amusement park that's owned by the county. When the kids were little we took them there a lot. I think we went back two summers ago when the covid restrictions were lifted.

https://playland.com/

Penguinsa, good luck with the eye exam results. I didn't know that tamoxifen could cause eye damage.

The new washing machine is up and running. There were a few bumps in the road getting it set up. The old washer still had some water in it, so getting it out of the house was a bit messy. When they plugged the new one into the same GFI (ground fault interrupt) outlet the old one had used, the outlet kept tripping off. Fortunately, we have another non-GFI outlet on the same wall in the laundry room and plugged it in there with no problem.

The installation technician told us that we had to run a normal cycle with an empty drum to let the machine calibrate itself. He started it and left. This was after he installed it, got it setup on our wifi with DH's help and installed the detergent bottles. About twenty minutes later, the machine set off an alarm and said on the screen that there was a water intake fault. DH shut the machine off, turned it back on and reran the cycle without a problem. We then did two loads of laundry that had built up since Sunday without a problem, so the error was hopefully a one time thing. Everything came out perfectly after a 30 minute express cycle.

I like the fact that it dispenses the detergent and non-chlorine bleach automatically. It calculates the amount based on your water hardness, the cycle you picked and the weight of the load of laundry you're doing. Miele included a plastic container of each with the machine and a voucher for five more bottles free from their website. They obviously want you to keep buying it from them in the future. It does have a normal pull out tray to add whatever detergent you like, but I think I'll stick with the Miele option for a while.

In the second picture there a lot of suds because there are no clothes. This was taken during the second attempt at the calibration cycle.

I've got washing machine envy for your new machine, too!
