Have a lovely trip, Lemons. Has your son been outside? He might have gotten into some irritating plants.

Goo luck with your phone, Deathray. DH is the tech support person at our house. Of course the kids don't need it, so that leaves me as his main customer.

The moving container was picked up this morning. DD packed it up to about a foot from the ceiling.

We went mattress shopping yesterday. The kids both have very old twin beds, so when DD was staying with us with her husband, they had to share a queen-sized airbed on the floor, which barely fit on the floor of her room. He's coming back next weekend so we wanted to get her a proper queen size bed, which will now fit in her room since her bureau is gone.

They had a nice selection at our favorite furniture store Bob's Discount Furniture. It's a no-haggle, everyday low-price place that sells mostly their own branded furniture, which is of very good quality. We wound up getting a new mattress for her, DS,, and ourselves. DH likes a softer mattress and I like very firm matress, and we got one that is split down the middle with two levels of firmness. It's all coming on Friday, so just in time for SiL's return. I can't wait to sleep on it. It felt fabulous lying down on it in the store.

Lemons, cold + windy = gin

sproutsandparsnips · 23/07/2024 15:02

Loving all the pics and stories about days out and holidays.
@Mumtobabyhavoc is that the Fairmont hotel in one of the pics? We stayed there!
DS's trip up Pen Y Fan was very wet. I don't know why they insisted on going up on such a bad day! DS 2 went up our local hill on Sunday which seemed a lot more sensible. They both have some holiday work labouring for a friend who is renovating a house.
My friend came to stay and we went for a stroll on the beach and a paddle.

Deathraystare · 23/07/2024 15:23

@MissConductUS
Your DD & Husband will be thrilled with the new bed and mattress I am sure.

Good news! I found one of my bus passes though typically it was not the 'free' 60 plus one. There was a small minus amount on it but I had very slightly more on my bank card than I thought so could manage to get to work again!

As I was walking out of work yesterday tired and grumpy, one of the inpatients yelled out Goodbye Grandma! This did not improve my mood! I may be old enough but having no children, I am deffo not a grandma!

@sproutsandparsnips
I would not mind a stroll on the beach and paddle myself! Sadly on another post about places you have been to that you don't think others have, there are plenty of places on my bucket list but I can barely afford to go to the end of my road!

Deathraystare · 23/07/2024 15:33

@Penguinsa

I may have said before that my Godson works for formula 1! One of the maintenance team!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/07/2024 17:53

Sprouts, yes, it is. It's what we've always called the Hotel Vancouver. Now the Fairmont, I think. Other view beside Apple store in pic is the Hotel Georgia. You might have to enlarge. The movie night is the north side of the art gallery. New gallery site being built down Georgia beside the QE Theatre.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/07/2024 17:53

Death, maybe it was meant in a more endearing way? 🤔

mathanxiety · 23/07/2024 21:05

Dsis and I are in the throes of getting DM some new kitchen appliances. She needs a fridge and stove and is adamant she wants the exact same as the ones she has now, but they are either discontinued or very impractical (i.e. a small fridge with an icebox that needs periodic defrosting). We're going to buy what we think is best and hang the consequences.

sproutsandparsnips · 23/07/2024 21:23

@Deathraystare working in London must be a challenge as so expensive (I hope I've got that right that you live and work there!). I hope you find your free card! I was amazed when I visited London to meet up with friends that I could just scan my card on the barriers and it knew where I had been. Easy to rack up the pounds though!
@mathanxiety defrosting fridges and freezers is one of my least favourite jobs, so now I would get a frostless one if I could.

Death, maybe it was meant in a more endearing way?

Huh? Oh! You mean about calling me Grandma! I guess it threw me because although I am 64 I I don't think of myself as a Grandma as I have no kids or Grandkids. Plus I was very grumpy and sleepy! I don't mind when some cultures call me aunty or sister but away with your Grandma please!!

@sproutsandparsnips
I hope you enjoyed your trip! Yes, I both live and work in London. I love it!

I am grateful we have the oyster card system and also at 60+ you can apply for a free card but it only works after 9/9.30 Mon to Fri, other times you need to use the normal card. Of course you can also use your bank card. However if like me you lost both cards and your bank card is low on funds (I found this out this morning!) then oh dear! I hope there is enough on the oyster I put money on for tonight's bus ride!

Talking of defrosting freezers, In my last flat (same tower block) I used to defrost the fridge/freezer every 6 months. Shared accommodation. For some reason in this new flat, I haven't had to do it once! It is only a Beko so nothing fancy.

HildaTablet · 24/07/2024 08:36

This is reminding me that I need to defrost my freezer. My least-favourite household job ever, worse even than oven-cleaning for me. I must grit my teeth and get on with it sometime this week.

DandyDandylion · 24/07/2024 18:59

My freezer is supposed to be frost free but it actually drops water just below the bottom drawer. I pull the drawer out twice a week and use a wooden spatula to chip the ice out. I guess it’s better than completely defrosting everything.

MissConductUS · 24/07/2024 19:56

I don't think I've had a freezer that needed manual defrosting since the 1970s. The frost free ones have heaters in the walls that come on periodically and melt off any accumulated frost. That can cause the dripping, @DandyDandylion.

DD has gone to the Department of Motor Vehicles to change her car registration to her married name. DS has decided not to accept the job in Boston. The organization that offered it is not in good financial shape. If it were local, he might have taken a chance with it, but it was chancy enough to make relocating risky. There were also some red flags that came up in the recruiting process. We advised him not to take it, so we were all in agreement about it.

The new beds are still on track for delivery on Friday. All things considered, I'm a bit more excited about that than I should be.

MissC my DM's icebox+ fridge hails from the mid 70s. We are going to ger her what is called a larder fridge, with no icebox. She has a huge chest freezer so she doesn't need a freezer bit for her fridge. She will huff and puff, but we plan to tell her the icebox part guzzles electricity and costs too much to run.

IWanderedLonely · 24/07/2024 22:05

On the subject of fridges, when we married (and began to live together 🦖) my parents gave us their Frigidaire fridge that they'd had since 1961. It was brilliant, but looked unfashionable to my young eyes, so as soon as we could afford to we bought a new one. I often wonder how long it would have lasted.

IWanderedLonely · 24/07/2024 22:09

Also, I heard my son talking to my grandson today (his nephew) " Name we need to throw your sandwiches away now you've wee-ed on them" Hmm

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/07/2024 02:23

iwandered, definitely a good idea to throw away! Good thing it was caught! 😅

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/07/2024 07:54

Got lucky and saw a bit of the fireworks tonight driving home from the Kits area. Stopped in at Granville Island and saw them from a distance, but without the crowds or traffic jam afterward!

Yay! I found my 60+ bus pass! Exactly where I thought it would, in a pair of trousers which luckily have not yet made it to the laundrette!

@Mumtobabyhavoc

Lovely photos!

@IWanderedLonely
One of my friends and I had a great chat about things not lasting like they used to. She told me a guy in Cuba had written a book about how to mend anything! This was a few years back, possibly decades. Of course Cubans had to be very resourceful.

Sounds like your dear grandson did not like his sandwiches. At least Gordon Ramsey hasn't tried that!!

Lemonsandlemonade · 25/07/2024 15:05

Photos from last few days. Have had such fun in north wales. Not had any signal really. Been such fun though.

New beds are exciting miss c!

Good your kids have work Sprouts

DH is currently away for 8 days and just DD, DS, Floof and I here as silkies are also on their holidays. DH has gone to France, to see his Mum and other friends / relatives, friends in Orleans and a friend in Toulouse. My operation was cancelled and pushed back a week, that's OK but I hope they don't keep doing that, now on 13th August. It looks like that surgeon just does 1 day a week on Tuesdays. I applied for an interesting job on a remote island and didn't expect to hear back but did and have had an interview and now a written test.

Excited Olympics start tomorrow. Got a steamer for first time ever for when DH away and have so far steamed potatoes, cabbage, mint, purple sprouting broccoli and its amazingly easy.

sueelleker · 25/07/2024 17:11

Had a Fracture Clinic appointment today (I dislocated my shoulder in early June) They're going to arrange for a scan, as I may need rotator cuff repair.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/07/2024 18:11

Penguinsa!!! How interesting and exciting!!! Would you move or work from home?

I'm off to a med appt shortly. Tweaked my back a few days ago and this appt couldn't come soon enough. My mood and mouth have been 🤬

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/07/2024 18:11

Oh no!!!! @sueelleker How have you been managing?

Deathraystare · 25/07/2024 18:12

@Penguinsa

That job sounds intruiging!
