DS2 is 5 today. He got a new bike. We went to the beach and for a cycle ride and had ice creams, then MIL made him a birthday cake with candles and a birthday tea. He was thrilled.

IWanderedLonely · 25/07/2024 21:09

Sue is that painful? It sounds it!

Lemons is that Caernarfon Castle?
We've just arrived in Rhos-on-Sea

Penguinisa he was naked because he'd just been brought in from the paddling pool and he squats to eat (and play, I can't squat like that anymoreHmm). He is 2 next week and a very picky eater, he doesn't like his highchair, so I now just put his food near him and "ignore" him - he eats more this way.

sueelleker · 25/07/2024 21:46

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/07/2024 18:11

Oh no!!!! @sueelleker How have you been managing?

Not too bad. I had to wear a sling for a week, then I have a series of exercises to do- weeks 1 to 3, 3 to 6, and 6 to 12. The joint is a bit painful, but I'm getting there.

Penguinsa · 25/07/2024 22:16

Thanks Havoc and Death Hope the med appointment helps Havoc.

Happy 5th Birthday to DS2 LuluBlakey

Enjoy Rhos-on-Sea Iwandered

Hope you can get that sorted Sue

Just watching Linford on BBC.

sproutsandparsnips · 25/07/2024 22:46

Hope not too painful @sueelleker.
@Mumtobabyhavoc I think the festival of ligh5 was on when we went to Vancouver last year! How time flies.
Lovely photos @Lemonsandlemonade, I love Wales.
@Penguinsa sounds very interesting.......
@Deathraystare we live in a throwaway society - and I am as guilty as anyone.
@IWanderedLonely hahaha to your nephew!
I may have to go into work to cover tomorrow. Very annoying......

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/07/2024 22:52

the UK competes Saturday night. If I can catch it I'll post pics. 👍
Take care @sueelleker 🥰

Lemonsandlemonade · 26/07/2024 07:00

Wow penguina would you consider the job?

Lulu happy birthday to your DS.

i wondered it is indeed yes. A wonderful castle 🏰 DS loved it and remembers some facts about it. Thought Caernarfon was very rough!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/07/2024 07:20

Iwandered, I think if you've made it to 2 with a high chair you've done well! Mine wasn't having it by about 1 1/2. 🤷‍♀️
Lulu, sounds like a lovely birthday. 🥰🥳

Wandered around downtown again for a bit with Havoc this evening. Went to the movie at the art gallery again. Tonight was the Princess Bride. Stayed for a little while. Feels like end of summer now that the breeze has returned and temp has dropped.

Lovely photos Havoc

Just waiting for opening ceremony of the Olympics - DH is in France at the moment but thankfully drove over and down south at the moment, will be going to Paris after but just to MILs house.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/07/2024 17:30

Watching/waiting here, too Penguinsa. Would have loved to go!!! When will you hear about job? Sorry your surgery got pushed. Havoc really enjoyed downtown again. Went to a bakery for a cookie then a candy shop. Bought import Oreos, Birthday Cake. Tried them at home when dc were asleep. 🤮Interesting the fine print said, Not to be sold outside Asia. 😲
Also walked through Hotel Vancouver lobby to show Havoc, and walk through, revolving door at Georgia Street entrance. @sproutsandparsnips yes, saw it says Fairmont. 😀 Had a very nice Paris window decor for Louis Vuitton (lobby shop). Exited via "magic doors" on Burrard (that's what I say to Havoc the auto sliding doors are). 🤗

Penguinsa · 26/07/2024 17:43

That sounds great Havoc I don't know exact timescale but originally my interview was due to be today and got brought forward to Monday then heard written stage on Wed did on Thurs. DD thinks they may have put another candidate in my original slot today which is plausible and if they also get written test maybe end of next week. Though could be as early as Monday if they know without written tests. No rush from my side have to do op and recovery first and they also said they could wait up to 4 months to me. I wasn't actually planning on applying for anything pre op but this looked very interesting and unique. Olympics ceremony on BBC now.

MissConductUS · 26/07/2024 18:53

Good luck with your scan, Sue. If you do need rotator cuff surgery, it's a fairly long recovery so plan accordingly.

Penguinsa, your job opportunity sounds fascinating. Would you have to relocate if you took it? A lot of surgeons only do procedures one or two days a week. If it gets pushed too far off, they'll need to redo your blood work. I think I have my final follow-up with the orthopedic surgeon for my herniated disc replacement in August.

Havoc, when you go into the city, do you take the train or drive? We always take the train into NYC because the traffic and the parking are so awful. It's lovely that you have all of that to see and do with the kiddos.

I'm working from home today. All the new mattresses, bed frames, and platforms have been delivered and set up. DH and DS took all of the old bedding out this morning and left it in the driveway, and the blokes who delivered the new things took it all away. They were here and gone in less than half an hour, and now we all have new beds. Our old mattress wasn't so bad, but the kids' mattresses were really worn out, so I'm glad we replaced everything.

It's a lovely day, and now that the bed situation is settled, I'm taking a bit of annual leave to do some shopping and get an early start on the weekend.

Currently watching Olympics opening ceremony. I'm finding it a little odd so far.

DandyDandylion · 26/07/2024 21:46

@Lemonsandlemonade which castle is that? Love north Wales and love a castle, so many great ones especially near the coast. We visited the one used in I’m a celebrity recently. That had fantastic views out over the bay.

@Penguinsa love the idea of moving to a remote island. Years ago we visited Mull and its only way of communicating with the mainland was a red telephone box with a mahoosive satellite dish on top. The locals said they were regularly without power and cut off from supply drops in bad weather. I imagine with progress in things like solar power it would be slightly easier nowadays. At least you could keep your fridge/freezer running.

@sueelleker ouch, hope you being well looked after.

I am watching some of the Olympic opening coverage. It’s interesting watching all the countries sailing down the Seine waving their flags. Of course some have far more representatives than others. Shame it is raining so hard but I guess that sums up 2024 in Europe.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/07/2024 22:00

Bit of delay watching Olympics here. DC were very active so put it on a long pause (should've recorded!) and watching now. I think it is super creative! Loving it here. 😍 Put together "buffet" of croissant, strawberry jam, caramel sauce, berries, grapes, cheese and coffee cake... with a cold latte.

Keep us posted re job, penguinsa!
miss, I can take train or drive. On a good day driving to core in 20 mins. Haven't done train with Havoc or baby yet. 😬

Dandy, that sounds very remote!

Penguinsa · 26/07/2024 23:10

Yes job is on the remote island MissC and there's a relocation allowance. At least no more calls from hospital at the moment so 12 more working days pre op and hoping they don't cancel again.

Watched the Olympics opening ceremony, it was very long and wet, good in places but a bit underwhelming overall. Hope coverage of games is good, there's always so much commentary. Though mainly hope it all goes safely for everyone involved.

That's interesting about Mull Dandy.

Lemonsandlemonade · 27/07/2024 05:55

@DandyDandylion it is Caernarfon castle a lovely one but I do like Conwy and also Harlech. I learnt a bit about King Edward's wife who was t quite the business woman.

I too found the whole ceremony good in parts but quite longwinded without many wow moments.

wow a remote island sounds amazing. Dah would love to do that. I would too in lots of ways.

I have seen a job I quite fancy the only thing is it's not permanent which I would worry about.

HildaTablet · 27/07/2024 08:52

Hope your shoulder's feeling better @sueelleker - they’re awful things when they go wrong (fellow-sufferer here)

Penguinsa I'm fascinated by your remote island job! Is it one of those idyllic places that attract thousands of applicants? If so, well done for getting to this stage and fingers crossed.

MissC, very impressed by the speed and efficiency of your bed removal/set-up operation ☺️

Watched a lot of the bonkers Olympics opening ceremony/giant boat-trip last night, in the company of the (three!) hilarious threads on here. Hooted with laughter at so many of the posts. Then right at the end, Claire Balding asked Michael Johnson what he thought of it and he said, after a very long pause, 'It was….different.' That finished me off!

Penguinsa · 27/07/2024 12:10

Might still be worth applying for not a permanent contract Lemons people tend to move themselves nowadays and also lots of shorter contracts get renewed. They can also get rid of people on a permanent contract first two years for pretty much any reason unless disabled so it's often not initially much more secure unless its a very short term contract or say covering a maternity leave.

Hilda I am not sure how many applications they get but it has quite specific requirements so its how many they get who have those requirements that's the issue. I would imagine they get quite a lot of unsuitable applications with people without the qualifications and language skills but those people would be sifted out pre interview. I have the qualifications, skills and experience they want but the issue might be if they have someone who also has that who is single apply they might go with that.

DD has gone to punting job. Done some cleaning and will now see if Olympics are on and hope they are better than opening ceremony.

MissConductUS · 27/07/2024 18:46

It seems to be the time for career changes. Good luck, Penguinsa, it sounds like you won't have much competition if their requirements are somewhat niche and that specific.

DS is interviewing for an accounting job with the Democratic National Committee that would be full time, but only last until the election in November. He'd have to relocate for a few months to Washington. He's also gotten a verbal offer to coach crew at a university that's about an hour away. The money's not much, but he can pursue a master's degree there for free while he's a member of the athletic department. It's too far to commute, but he could get a small apartment there and come back on weekends.

The new beds have passed their overnight test sleeps with everyone. I love mine, and might have to give it a Saturday afternoon nap test.

Miss, wow! for your ds' two opportunities. Amazing!
Penguinsa, so intriguing! 👍👍👍

I seem to be in MN minority, but quite enjoyed the opening ceremony. I think it showed off the city, culture and history in a very unique, creative and artistic way. The city was the stage. 👍 I think there were 80 or so big screens around the city to allow for viewing, so it seems people could get a mix of live & tv viewing. I wonder if there was traditional paid seating seating? Having attended the Olympics, from my pov, the opening/closing ceremonies are way too dear price-wise and the cost of that and medal rounds really make attending very exclusive. I was very moved by Celine's performance, too, especially having watched her doc on Prime.

Trying to get out with dc far and wide here. Went to another outdoor movie last night over in N Vancouver.
It was a fairly small gathering, but fine as very easily accessible including for parking. 👍

mathanxiety · 27/07/2024 23:07

I loved the opening ceremony - unique and surprising and very well done, imo, havoc.

I spent the day doing chores and watching bits of the sports. I don't remember the time trial biking from any previous Olympics but it was fun.

Penguinsa · 27/07/2024 23:38

I watched Olympics today and really enjoyed that on BBC, loved men's gymnastics, diving and swimming best.

DD did her punting job but said her hand stopped moving for 5 minutes before coming back and has decided to take herself to A&E, not something I would do on a Saturday night with the drunks and 10 hour waits unless I was expecting to die that night. But she won't believe me it will be OK and I don't drive and DH is away. She has a friend close by she can stay with if it gets past the time buses run but would prefer she had come home. I've told DH as he may be able to reason with her.

Floof is very unsettled with both DD and DH away and being very loud and hyper.

Penguinsa · 27/07/2024 23:41

The opening ceremony here the BBC cameras were constantly full of rain, its got really bad coverage here and on Twitter currently a campaign to boycott Olympics because of ceremony not being family friendly and ani-Christian. I think that's taking it a bit far but it was very long and not great on BBC. There's also a bit of French - British competition with 2012 here.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/07/2024 01:58

Math, Penguins, slept away the afternoon here. God, I crashed! I've got women's swimming on right now. They're fast! 🤗 It's highlights, so heats back to back condensed as it's going on for 6pm here.
I saw some of the anti threads. 😵‍💫 Good grief...
Wonder if your dd had a pinched nerve Penguinsa? Can he pretty debilitating. Agree, hospital on a weekend night can be a mixed bag of types...
Poor Floof! We're overdue for pics!!!
Just thinking...I watched NBC from the States and CBC from here and maybe it was how it was shot because it looked really good. 🤔
