Acid attack in Clapham

Has anyone else seen this horrible news story? Apparently 9 people have been injured, looks like the original targets were a woman and two children.

What is WRONG with people?!

I also thought possibly father of the kids and in some kind of crazed reactive state. Maybe about access to them, as he's clearly an abusive partner and father!

It's taking a long time for them to release details.. and agree not very assuring to those in the immediate area!

If he had a corrosive substance with him it was likely premeditated.

Angrycat2768 · 01/02/2024 08:45

I think he's been arrested

themusingsofaninsomniac · 01/02/2024 08:47

Well yes.. nobody can claim any kind of acid attack wasn't pre-meditated really. Nobody 'happens' to just carry it around.. and if they do.. then to me that means they are being pre-meditative either way!

What I meant was perhaps she was leaving him or had left and was trying to stop him seeing his kids and that was a possible motive. Or a new partner in the mix and him wanting to be mr macho

It's truly awful, I find these stories so upsetting. I've been refreshing constantly for updates just to know they are okay and not going to be permanently impacted for life from this

Oldmummy69 · 01/02/2024 08:47

Sadly it looks like domestic violence as usual. They were his own children.

Oldmummy69 · 01/02/2024 08:49

Hardly. Try living in Hackney! It looks like domestic violence sadly.

This is so awful. 😞

Oldmummy69 · 01/02/2024 08:49

And sadly almost certainly someone known to the victim in this case it looks like the partner.

Chersfrozenface · 01/02/2024 08:54

Just leaving him would be enough.

The most dangerous time for domestic abuse victims is when they try to leave

35965a · 01/02/2024 08:55

Most of the time acid attacks are ‘personal’ so victim will usually be a partner, ex-partner or gang related. Rare to be random.

Jessforless · 01/02/2024 09:19

This is awful, and must be domestic. I can’t fathom anyone hurting their own children. It’s a horrible world we live in.

themusingsofaninsomniac · 01/02/2024 10:02

It has been confirmed on BBC that they know each other. And that two of them will have life changing injuries 😞

Supersimkin2 · 01/02/2024 10:12

Sigh. Hideous. Hope they bang up
the little freak for years.

Andthereyougo · 01/02/2024 10:13

Just issued by Metro
“This morning the Met confirmed the victims were a 31-year-old woman and her two daughters, aged eight and three.
All three of them are still in hospital, and the injuries suffered by the mum and younger child ‘could be life changing’.
Superintendent Gabriel Cameron also confirmed this morning that the substance used in the attack was an alkaline.”

An alkaline burn is as bad as acid. Used in soap making it’s easy to obtain and burns even if just a ‘dot splash’ on the skin. When soapmaking most people keep a bottle of vinegar at hand to neutralise any splashes and wear protective goggles, gloves and long sleeves.

ThePoshUns · 01/02/2024 10:17

Awful.
Hope the bastard spilt some on himself as well.

Cincinnatus · 01/02/2024 10:22

Who carries acid or whatever it is around with them? Nobody does that unless they intend to do something with it. We all know which types love doing that.

No. This is what you get when men grow up with a sense of entitlement and zero respect for human life.

Violence against women is becoming so commonplace. That guy who tried to attack the women in a flat wearing body armour with a crossbow yesterday too. We need stalking to be taken far more seriously.

SquirmOfEels · 31/01/2024 23:23

Police are describing the attack as "horrific.

Details not completely clear, but

  • happened about 7:30 this evening
  • according to a London Assembly member, a man had thrown a substance (variously described as "acid" or "corrosive") at occupants of a car after a crash.
  • woman and two children involved (possibly in the car)
  • 9 injured - the others believed to be passers by who tried to assist and police officers
  • Injuries to the police are described as not serious
  • one was casualty discharged at scene without being taken to hospital, 5 taken to a major trauma centre, 3 to a local hospital
  • no word on condition of the other
  • fire service also attended scene
  • suspect not yet apprehended - manhunt underway

As the nearest hospital is St Georges Tooting (major teaching hospital; about 2 miles from there) I'm really wondering why they needed to send 5 elsewhere and thoughts are very much with those in hospital and all those who have helped (passers by and emergency services) plus all medical staff

(Edited to add: above points mainly taken from the SKY version, other outlets might have different/more info)

Edited

Could be that the other hospitals had better departments to deal with the casualties I.e they had plastic surgeons or higher levels of niche/specialist care maybe? I know they do this with RTA so wondering if this is the same.

this is one of my biggest fears as it could so easily happen to anyone. Poor children and other victims. I hope they catch the bastard who did it.

they should dip his testicles in acid as his punishment

EasternStandard · 01/02/2024 10:32

This is so sad, throwing a child to the ground as well as the attack

Poor, poor children and woman

Bollocks. White British men kill and harass their partners and ex partners all the time. "Honour" killings are culturally specific but quite different in nature.

lieselotte · 01/02/2024 10:37

Nothing to do with mental health (or culture) and everything to do with being a toxic entitled male, once again. Lets not make excuses, these men are evil.

See also Emma Pattison and her daughter.

I hate the human race sometimes. What have we become? Animals don’t steep to the level of cruelty and depravity that humans do.

MaggieBroonofGlebeSt · 01/02/2024 10:41

Cazpar · 31/01/2024 23:10

The same thing that's always wrong with people who do things like this. They're angry / stupid / mentally unwell / desperate / being coerced...

I hope you're not being serious! Plenty of people are mentally unwell or desperate and don't throw acid at children.

Lwrenn · 01/02/2024 10:41

That poor family. I have no words.

The sentencing for acid attacks is usually quite low, because it predominantly affects women.
I think acid attacks should carry a full life sentence without possibility of parole, nobody who can commit an acid attack is safe to be released publicly.
It's one of the worst forms of violence imo.

Bululu · 01/02/2024 10:42

This will deter those fuckers.
