I wonder if you'll have ducklings later MissC.

I made a valentine's day card today.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/02/2024 23:26

Sprouts, and you'd think over here we'd also be great at dealing snow, but Vancouver and area being on the SW coast has problems every year when it snows: lots of accidents, roads not ploughed, busses unable to run, trains not working... you can always count on it being a gong show here.
Miss, awww a duck couple! 😍

It's quite a nice day here. 😎
Got squeezed in for eye appt this morning as have had itchy/scratchy eye past couple of weeks. Thought I might have beginning of an infection or scratched the inner eyelid. Turns out it's blocked glands. It improved over the weekend because I was putting a warm wet cloth over my eye. Likely cause is that I haven't been washing my face in the mornings all the time. Just been brushing teeth, looking after baby and toddler and often going back to bed because we were all sick. Now have special wipes to clean my eyes for the next couple of weeks, must continue with compresses daily and absolutely must not neglect myself. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

MissConductUS · 13/02/2024 14:25

Here's what it looks like currently. It's about six inches so far, and is supposed to keep snowing for another two to three hours. The town has been out plowing and salting the road.

That's beautiful MissC and happy birthday to your DS.

Rome sounds great for your DC Helena

Enjoy the visit Sprouts

Yes look after yourself Havoc Its hard to find the time with 2 little ones.

Pancake day here. DD was supposed to be out with friends / boyfriend pancake making but then her last mock exam got postponed to tomorrow and she only found out today so she's back here revising. Though we will make pancakes so she won't miss those.

Did a quick bit of carpet cleaning and look better. Watched Below Deck.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/02/2024 19:38

Snow looks very pretty, Miss. was just chatting about our lack of snow here and concerns, already, about water shortage and wildfires this coming summer. 🥺
Penguinsa, might make pancakes, here, too. It's not a common thing here for Shrove Tues, but Havoc has asked for pancakes, sooo....

Speaking of Shrove Tues... I am pondering giving something up for Lent. Didn't last year. Usually it's chocolate- because that hurts! 😢

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 13/02/2024 20:21

Beautiful snow pic MissC. I hope it isn't negatively affecting your life and you can still get out and about when necessary.

Havoc I was wondering about lent earlier too. I've had a hard time lately and I don't think giving anything nice up is the right choice for me this year. I might try to give up laziness and be more productive, I think that's the best I can do. I really hope you don't get wildfire this summer too.

halfpasteleven · 13/02/2024 21:09

We had pancakes for breakfast, DS took some to school for his lunch, then we had more for dinner.. I'm all pancaked out but the DC loved it although DD had hers plain despite having the sweetest tooth imaginable.. what's rare certainly is wonderful.

I'm wondering about giving up something tomorrow as well.. I want to give up sweets but I think I will find that really hard- but I guess it's not meant to be easy!

HelenaJustina · 13/02/2024 21:52

I’m going to give up caffeine. The withdrawal will be tough but it’s something that really makes me think about Lent several times a day!

I’m not able to increase financial giving at the moment but will increase the donations to the local Foodbank. And I’ll go to either Exposition or Stations of the Cross during the weeks.

Did pancakes for a late breakfast for the DC and 2 friends of DC3 who stayed over last night. Then we had more pancakes at a relative’s this evening. Definitely had a surfeit!

Penguinsa · 13/02/2024 22:41

Havoc Hope you enjoy the pancakes if you have them. Don't give things up for lent here though have largely stopped coffee and less sweet things already.

I did have 2 pancakes tonight though one with mozzarella and parma ham and one with white chocolate and blueberry.

I am impressed by your pancake dedication Half We love them here as well.

mathanxiety · 14/02/2024 01:31

We ended up not having pancakes as I was too tired after work and had to inflate a tyre on the way home. I think I have a slow leak and I know I'll have to have it looked at but for now I'm going to avoid the highway and keep checking it. I need an oil change in about 300 miles so that might be a good occasion to get the tyre looked at.

I'm pondering what to give up - very likely late nights, instagram rabbit holes, something like that.

DD sent a photo of a rain-soaked Boston to illustrate the fact that weather forecasting is an inexact science. Apparently they closed schools in preparation for the snowstorm that socked NY.

Hope you're still ok, MissC.

Tilllly · 14/02/2024 02:50

@MissConductUS
Carpet cleaning here to.... courtesy of puppy!!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/02/2024 07:00

So, I didn't make pancakes. 🫣
And I am re-considering giving up anything chocolate.

Tilly, how are you doing?
Math, I'm a bit worried about you leaving tire to chance. Considering we're still in winter maybe just get it repaired? I'd hate to read a post telling about how you got stranded on a stormy night, back country road, no cell service, hoped someone would stop to help, scared someone weird would stop to help, someone weird stopped to "help", you made a run for it, hid in the bushes until they were gone, lost your shoe, were soaking wet and freezing, walked back to car, had locked yourself out, sat down beside car, was found hypothermic by a local farmer who took you to the farm and called 911, were taken to hospital, your insurance wouldn't cover, turned out to be error, but took so long to resolve your frozen toes had to be amputated, and now you're walking with an uncomfortable limp made worse by being unable to find shoes that fit. I mean I'd just hate it if that happened to you all because you could have fixed the tyre now. ... 🤔

Tilllly · 14/02/2024 07:27

I'm ok @Mumtobabyhavoc ☺️

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/02/2024 07:41

Tillly, sending you 🩷

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 14/02/2024 12:17

You should take up writing Havoc! I want to read your novel 😁

A day of waiting for parcels here.

MissConductUS · 14/02/2024 15:12

The pancake supper at church was canceled last night because of the snow.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! I listen to a daily news podcast from The Economist, and this morning, they had a story concerning declining levels of celebration of Valentine's Day in the UK, mostly due to the cost of living problem and Brexit making it harder to import flowers.

We wound up with almost a foot of snow. Here's what the deck looked like when it stopped. DH and DS had a big job clearing it from the driveway and deck. It's sunny and cold today, and there won't be much melting anytime soon.

I’ve added screen time limits to social media apps math for Lent but hoping the habits become permanent. I ran to Mass this morning and walked home. Have to take DC to 8pm as they were all out and about this morning.

The snow looks lovely Miss we’ve had a very grey and drizzly half term here

HildaTablet · 14/02/2024 21:51

Gosh, all that snow, MissC! It’s weirdly mild here. Temperatures are heading up to about double what they normally are at this time of year. Mind you, it’s poured with rain for most of the day.

On the TV news earlier this evening I saw one of the most English things ever - a report about a group of people dedicated to saving toads (and also the occasional frog) who try to cross the roads of their little village to go to the pond and mate (I'm talking about the toads here - not the people 😬). They were all out in the dark, in the rain, getting drenched, stepping out in front of cars to halt them so they could tenderly pick up these lust-crazed toads and carry them to safety.

I said to DH that it could be a training video specially made to demonstrate the glorious eccentricity of the English.

Tilllly · 14/02/2024 22:41

@HildaTablet
Wish I'd seen that 🤣

Penguinsa · 14/02/2024 22:52

I got a few things in for Valentine's Day for DH and the kids, some new posh hot chocolates that DS loves, some chocolates that are like flowers and 2 packs of biscuits, lemon curd and chocolate hazelnut.

DD had her mock exam today then came home, her boyfriend went to a university offer holders day today as the other choice he is skiing with his family. Still that's at least all mocks over for DD, all unis she wants sorted and half term next week.

Did a bit of cleaning upstairs and black bin was collected. Yesterday it was nearly empty but we ended up with 2 excess sacks (DDs room!).

DH is having to work really long hours as staff have left but he was due to go into the office today but wfh to be with us for Valentine's Day he said. He normally wfh.

mathanxiety · 14/02/2024 23:10

Havoc!
Did you and my DS get together to try to persuade me to get the tyre checked? He said almost exactly what you did :) except that in his version raccoons stole my wallet so I wasn't able to call AAA. The scenario of me locking myself out of my car is extremely realistic.
I think I'll bite the bullet and get it looked at.

MissC that is a lot of snow all right. How are your utilities holding up? I heard it was heavy snow.

Helena I went out to Mass this morning too, and got ashes on my forehead, followed by stares all day from people I encountered.

DD bought me Maltesers for Valentine's Day from a local candy shop that sells imported sweets and goodies. I have a Crunchie too - set aside for emergencies. She begged me not to get her anything as she's feeling under the weather and suspects she's caught the flu from someone she works with. FIngers crossed she'll fight it off.

Tilllly · 14/02/2024 23:21

Do it @mathanxiety
And report back!

bizzey · 14/02/2024 23:32

Omg Havoc !! Your story has given me nightmares as it is sooo a situation that I would have ended up in !🤣🤣!

I had similar...but not as dramatic..

On the way to an ante natal appointment 7 months pregnant with dc3...my tyre blew !

Stupidly continued to hospital for the appointment!

I then asked for directions to a garage to get a new tyre...

I had just moved to an new area of England....where they did not use the same words for things as I was use to in London.

They were giving me directions using "islands " as instructions...

I could not find any islands ....islands for me were the middle of the road crossings for pedestrians in big roads ....where you go half way ...wait for the other side to be empty then walk across ....

Well the "islands " they were talking about were flipping Roundabouts !!

Took me ages to work it out !

Having gone miles out of my way looking for crossings for pedestrians!🤣🤣!

Anyhow....math ...get your tyre fixed 😀🤣!

It can go at anytime !

bizzey · 14/02/2024 23:38

A half productive day for me today !

I knew I was brewing something yesterday and last night and this morning was horrible with that upper respiratory thing ....where you have a tickley throat ....cough ...and then get the tickle again ...and rinse and repeat !!

I had no lLemsips (medicated hot soothing drinks) ...so had to take some tablets ....for cold and Flu ...

Well surprised to say ...I think they have worked !

I know they have the same medication in them as Lemsip...but ...just didn't feel as soothing 🤣

bizzey · 14/02/2024 23:40

Any how ...I did manage to put the new shelving unit together...
It is still in the kitchen and not in the cupboard yet ...

But I need to have a think , what is going on what shelf .
