I’ve been watching No Offence, the police drama set in Manchester. I think in the context I heard it, nugget might have been a reference to a child who was a target of a pedophile.

I love British crime shows.

It is still snowing and we still have no running water. There’s a stack of dirty dishes by the sink and I can’t take a bloody shower.

Oh, no Miss! How li g has your wYer been off now? At least you have heat? 🤞

Had a very low-key Orthodox Christmas dinner: spaghetti, prawns, mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, tomato sauce, pecorino. Not unlike anything I'd typically make , but was quite satisfying. It was fun watching Havoc open a few more prezzies, too. Planning to take tree down tomorrow. I'm also planning on salmon in puff pastry. I might make brownies for dessert with some mascarpone cream and berries as I need to use up ingredients. We might get snow later in the week. I also saw the news about all the flooding in England. Climate change?

Tilllly · 07/01/2024 06:14

@MissConductUS what a PITA! How long without water now? Are you melting snow for a cuppa?!

Havoc the flooding is presumed to be climate change
We've had so much rain for so long, the rivers are swollen, fields and traditional flood plains are water logged - just going on usual walks needs wellies, it's so muddy
So as soon as it rains, there's nowhere for the water to go

HildaTablet · 07/01/2024 08:42

You’ve had such bad luck with water and power issues, MissC - it must be so frustrating to have problems yet again. Hope they resolve them quickly.

I have to admit I’m impressed that you’re watching 'No Offence', which is very good (and very funny) but does have a lot of regional and slang usages of language, even for a Brit not from the North! I’d have said that 'nugget' can have several meanings…in the context you mention, yes, it can mean a child perceived as a target by a predator (yeuch), or alternatively just a stupid person ('you nugget!'). We loved 'No Offence' in our house - wish they’d bring it back.

Havoc - glad to hear you're better and things are continuing to head in the right direction.

MissConductUS · 07/01/2024 11:04

Havoc and Tilllly, It's 5:55 Am here, and the water stopped running yesterday at about 1 PM, so it's been off for about 17 hours. The power is still on, so we have heat. And we have loads of water to drink. We keep a five-gallon cooler of spring water in the kitchen and have six extra bottles for it in the garage, so that's not a problem. I just had my first cup of coffee. The real problem is no water for washing up or showering.

I've looked at our local social media on NextDoor and someone said they've talked to the crew repairing the water main break and that they expected to be finished around midnight last night. So they're six hours late for that.

It looks like we got 4-5 inches of snow and the temperature is just above freezing, so it's probably the wet snow. DH and DS will have to clear it with the snow blower when the sun comes up. The forecast is we may still get another inch or so before it finally stops in the early afternoon.

Hilda, it is a great show. I'm almost done with season two and dreading the end of season three. Fortunately, there seem to be lots of other good choices on Acorn. For $6 per month, it's a bargain. I don't mind the slang, it's fun for me to learn, and perhaps I can use it here on MN to sound like a Brit. 😁

The water has slowly started to come back on. We have a bathroom off the laundry room, and I left the tap on the sink open as the pipes are filled with air. I wanted to be able to hear the pressure come back up if it did. It's not great, but it was enough to wash some dishes and flush the toilets.

There were at least a hundred houses without water, so recharging the system will take a bit of time, no doubt, but thank goodness it's on the mend.

sproutsandparsnips · 07/01/2024 16:13

Glad you've got some water back Miss.
DS's rugby off this morning due to frozen pitch - training was off this week due to waterlogged pitch!

MissConductUS · 07/01/2024 16:52

So, we had partial water pressure for about an hour and then they shut it off again. Social media reports are that the town water department is diligently working on, as we approach the 24 hour mark.

DH has used the snowblowers to clear the driveway and deck and taken down the Christmas tree. The ginger cat is deeply upset by the loss of his hiding place under the tree.

By the way, we lose power here fairly frequently because the lines are above ground. I guess the water mains are just old. The joys of being semi-rural.

The birds are mobbing the feeder as their usual sources of food are covered by the snow.

i have no idea what we’ll do for dinner if the water doesn’t come back on.

Sue - ah ok didn’t know such things existed. Every days a learning day!

Lovely pictures MissC - hope all your power and water issues have stopped now.

Back to work tomorrow after two weeks off.

Tilllly · 07/01/2024 22:24

Definitely melt some snow @MissConductUS a la chalet school!

I went to church and had a lovely surprise when one of my old Sunday schoolers turned up! Been about 10 years 🥰

Felt rough this afternoon so have been in bed watching rubbish I'd recorded and snoozing

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/01/2024 23:28

Miss, did your water come back?
Tillly, we all need days just snuggled in bed with crap tv.

watching a doc on Edward VIII from 2022. Pretty sure I've seen it before. What a traitor and narcissist. It's kind of shocking he kept any title at all.

MrsFloof · 07/01/2024 23:33

Hope your water is back MissC

Just a quiet day here with a roast pork dinner and then galette, French New Year cake.

Collected IKEA cabinet but need to assemble. I hoovered more fluff from Floof. He is so trilly and purry as usual.

MissConductUS · 08/01/2024 00:08

The water did come back around 1:00, so it was 24 hours to fix. You don't realize how hard it is to cope without it until it's gone. We've all had showers. 😀

We just had a lovely dinner of baked ham, baby peas and au gratin potatoes, and DH is doing the washing up.

Hello all !
I am finally catching up with everyone's news .

Havoc ..hope the BP is finally coming under control!

MissC ..how frustrating.
Though at least you seem to have enough water to make cups of tea !

I have the Post Office series on my recordings. Not managed to watch yet.
I feel like I need to be in a good concentration state to watch it all , as opposed to watching something to fall asleep to !!

My woosh of energy last week left me very quickly 🤣🤣!

I woke up the next morning feeling like my bones were made of concrete filled lead weights ...attached by pieces of jelly 🤣🤣!

I felt so ill.
I managed to open the door for the hoover delivery as they needed a code from me ...but must have looked so rough that the delivery lady actually took two steps backwards away frome to take the code 🤣🤣!

Ds3 made me a cup of tea , but couldn't find my tea bags (pot was empty and new pack was in cupboard...!)
So he made me a Chai tea , which I have to say was quite nice !

Slowly starting to come together today .

Sitting room ...cleaned and tidied and Christmas stuff bagged up ...
but the Christmas stuff has only made it to the hallway so far !!

Set up / read the instructions to my new hoover.

It seems to take a long time to charge, but that could be because it has a digital display for the battery and I am impatient!

Normally I am use to seeing
1 bar/2 bar/3 bar display of how much charge there is ...and never thought anything of it.

I need to stop looking at the numbers !

A bit on the nippy side here weather wise , but definitely not as extreme as others are having it .
Stay safe everyone.

bizzey · 08/01/2024 00:42

Ohhhh it worked !!

I posted all of the above on the wrong thread !🤦🤦!

DS 3 has just shown me how to copy and paste and share ....or something!!

Need to remember how to do it again 🤣🤣

mathanxiety · 08/01/2024 01:43

It's good to hear your water is back, MissC. We have a little snow here, the kind that's good for packing and building. No water problems yet this winter as it's just hovering around the freezing mark. This coming week is one the meteorologists are all hedging their bets on, but the consensus is we'll have more snow. It looks as if we're drifting into properly freezing weather for the remaining weeks of January, not unsurprisingly.

I got my Christmas decorations down and put away, including the tree, which DD4 and I wrapped in a big tree bag I made last year from some sheets that were on their last legs. It's now down at the bins in the alley. I somehow managed to pick a pretty fresh tree this Christmas, so we had very few needles.

Havoc I hope you're resting as much as possible and that your BP is coming down.

Hope everyone else who is under the weather will soon be feeling better.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/01/2024 02:47

Just finishing dinner and watching the Golden Globes. Yea!!! Cillian Murphy just won for his role in Oppenheimer. 👏🍀

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/01/2024 02:52

And in dull, but delicious, news: dinner was salmon in puff pastry with spinach and sun-dried tomatoes. 😛

Hallelujah for 🚿 @MissConductUS

Cat woke me up....

Deathraystare · 08/01/2024 08:25

@Mumtobabyhavoc

Right (rub hands with glee) round to yours for my next meals - yours are always lovely (unless they contain meat?).

Re the BP I am on lots of medication for BP, Diabetes type 2, Cholesterol and it includes one water tablet and two others that the side effects are 'pissing for England). Oh and pills for heart failure which amuses me. Surely if your heart fails, it stops!!!

Yes it is horrible that so many people suffer with floods. Happily I don't but one day getting off the bus to work there was a 'lake' in the road. Although I live in London and it being a main city there are still places that are poorly lit (like just outside my work place and going home at 8pm no joke when it has been raining heavily and the pavements are all up).

Mind you when a friend and I went to Kephalonia - we had to get to the stop at 5am and it was pitch black, could not see a thing. Luckily my friend had thought to bring torches so we had to put them in front of us so the bus driver could see us! Lovely stars though!!!

How did Barbie do at the Globes. Did not see Oppenheimer though I think Cillian Murphy is a good actor.

@bizzey

Poor you! Is it Covid? That is doing the rounds again. My boss has it and we believe a receptionists husband had it. I wonder if I had it but I believe it was a cold. A cup of tea makes everything better! Though in some countries they only drink tea when they are ill!

@Tillly
Hope you are better soon. Best thing to go to bed and watch tv...even if it is shite tv!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/01/2024 11:55

Death, god you're dealing with a lot re the meds. Re being vegetarian: do you eat any fish? Puff pastry is a nice xhange. How are you for feta? You could do a slice of feta on top of chopped spinach, sundried tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms, then drizzle some of the tomato oil from the jar on top of the feta and make another layer of the veg and fold up the pastry. You could also sub a slice of tofu for feta. Just a quick thought before going back to sleep after a 3am nursing session. 🥱

Edited to add:
I also loooove aubergine. I slice it, coat in egg (whisked), flour, egg, seasoned breadcrumbs (Italian herb blend and a bit of salt), then place onto a parchment lined baking sheet and pop in the oven til soft and golden. Remove then top with spaghetti tossed in marinara and grate pecorino or parm overtop; or top slices with marinara and a slice of mozza cheese and pop back into oven under broiler until melted. Endless toppings could work 😛

bizzey · 08/01/2024 13:27

Ohhhh we have got SNOW ❄️❄️!!

Well ....I say snow....it's a bit more like the sky has a dandruff problem , type of snow ..🤣!

Don't think I will be making any snowmen ☃️☃️⛄ later ! 😟🤣!

Tilllly · 08/01/2024 14:33

No snow here

Just bloody cold
