MissC Jammy and ok are universal. British slang makes no apparent sense half the time, it must be weird to a foreigner 😁

The post office thing completely bypassed me Death so I've no idea what's happened. Someone covering something up I expect and claiming it can't possibly be their fault. This country is full of scandals it's a disgrace.

That's so Christmassy, DS sneaking cake in the middle of the night Floof.

I hope you're not stranded too long Helena.

I've been eating the remaining Christmas junk food today. The tree is down and awaiting being packed away.

MrsFloof · 05/01/2024 16:55

Death Floof also goes in the hamper that is too small for him, the other day found him in there you know when they curl up in a circle, he was an upright circle with half of him having to lean on the lid as he couldn't fit in. Bigger hamper was a metre away but nope he was going to do this.

The post office thing was horrendous with I think 4 of them committing suicide over it when they had done nothing wrong.

MissC I don't know the origins of oi or jammy, maybe jammy would be from time jam was a luxury. Oi is not very polite, associated with things like punk rock, not offensive either just quite direct.

We put DSs gifts in the bigger hamper that Floof doesn't really use though will probably retrieve it back as DS will likely spill things on it. It has a washable liner. DD has been eyeing up the hampers though saying she loves hampers, tins and also seems to be after the glass I got my Christmas candle in. Its fine, good to see them used.

I asked DH yesterday if we should get a handyman in to do bits around the house and he said no ask me tomorrow and I will do things. Midday he's still in bed. I then ask about the blinds, he said I will do them. 1pm find him in bed again. I query and he said he has measured the walls but needed a rest after and cannot do more work without a pencil and claims we have none. I suggest a pen. He rather grumpily agrees and puts 2 marks on then goes for another rest. Then finally he has got the drill and 1 blind is up and now he's having another rest. Hopefully the other blind will get put up later but this is a bit painful.

I have ordered an IKEA cabinet / bookcase to put in the living room which we get on Sunday. That will need assembling.

Hope all is well @Mumtobabyhavoc must be exhausting at the moment.

MrsFloof · 05/01/2024 16:58

I have been hoovering and Floof is defluffing at an incredible rate, some of it I just hoovering yesterday and already 4 big fluff patches in like 2 metres.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/01/2024 18:15

Hello ☺️ Been reading updates. There's a lot happening with everyone!
I'm getting bits of energy here and there and have managed some cleaning and laundry this week and Havoc helped me make banana bread yesterday. (Stirring wirh one hand and tasting with the orher!) 🤦‍♀️🤣
Midwife should be dropping by today and I'll see my obgyn on Monday. Spent several hours in emerg on Tuesday night with high blood pressure. Seems I've developed post partum preeclampsia. BP became dangerously high. Had it not been for midwife prompting me to check it (had been high when I left hospital, but not dangerous) who knows what could've happened as it was edging towards quite dangerous. Anyway, was given three doses meds, one being a quick acting rescue med, and got home around 2:30am and in bed by 5 or 6 as baby had a couple feedings. Then Havoc woke up and needed milk and a diaper change. Luckily I have a blood pressure monitor at home. I didn't have any symptoms my BP was high. Have now got medication.
Reminder: High BP in women is not the same as with men. We can be quite asymptomatic. Having a monitor at home was a life saver.

Made a spinach and cheese omelette for our breakfast and am now going to wash up and get dressed (change pyjamas, really 🤣) and then make a latte and have a big slice of banana bread - with butter, too, I think...making up for my calorie deficit while pregnant!😛😛😛

MrsFloof · 05/01/2024 19:35

Sorry to hear you had postpartum pre-eclampsia Havoc glad it got picked up. Lovely sounding food as ever. Good to hear from you.

Going to have pancakes here for dinner. I will have smoked salmon and sour cream and then a second with white chocolate and blueberries.

Tilllly · 05/01/2024 21:01

Bloody hell @Mumtobabyhavoc
That's horrific

Get some rest

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/01/2024 21:25

Thanks for the support Floof & Tillly,
I'm relieved and happy to say BP was 120/85 this morning. So, trending down. 👍👍👍

Pancakes for dinner, Floof? You're speaking my language! 😛😛😛😛

It's quite chilly and rainy here. Temp is dropping and looks to hit 0c by Sunday and as low as -12c next week. For us on the southern West Coast that's pretty damn cold 🥶

MrsFloof · 05/01/2024 21:45

-12C brrr. Wrap up warm Havoc It just dips to -1 at night here at the lowest. You'll all have to pop over to warm up and have some pancakes.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/01/2024 22:20

Floof, trust me... I would. And also because I'm drooling over your new gorgeous kitchen! 😃 And I'll bring cheese and baguette to snack on, too. (Mmm, cheese)

MrsFloof · 05/01/2024 22:27

Love cheese and baguette especially the baguette you get freshly cooked in France at the bakers. The supermarket ones here are a bit meh.

We have a bakers in the village but they have stopped doing bread.

Floof is excelling himself today, we still have the Christmas trees etc up and he knocked the smaller Christmas tree over twice today. Both times he looks at it rather concerned but like huh how did that happen? Couldn't have been my big clumsy paw could it. Nope.

Lemonsandlemonade · 06/01/2024 05:45

Hilda - The programme I felt did a good job of telling the story it was horrific.

Havoc- oh no glad your BP is on way down now. How frightening.

Had a lovely woodland walk yesterday 😀

Tilllly · 06/01/2024 06:17

How are you this morning @Mumtobabyhavoc ?

Deathraystare · 06/01/2024 09:40

@MissConductUS

I loved no offence!!

My favourite bit was when thr main character used a mouth spray and a perfume spray up her skirt but mixed them up! So had to dash into the loo to sort herself out!!!

Jammy may well refer back to a time when it was a luxury item. Anyone lucky is very jammy indeed!

Oi is rather impolite. A bit like Hey you! Instead of excuse me (when you want someone's attention). Normally you would use it if someone tried to Rob you or barge past you. Not especially Manchunian as Cockley geezers would say it too. Oi i mate, you spilt my pint!!

I am in a bit of a better mood cos I have found my glasses. I tried wearing the reading glasses I had but could see better without!

@Mumtobabyhavoc

Gosh that was scarey. Mine is always shy high but keep having to remember to take my pills.

@MallardsMoorhensAndLethe

The post office scandal was due to a faulty computer system which was rolled out too early before any faults could be tweaked. The post masters and mistresses got blamed and in their contract they were obliged to make up any shortfall. The big nobs refused to believe their computers were at fault. The result was suicide, mental health breakdown, bankruptcy etc. They are dragging their heels over compensation.

MissConductUS · 06/01/2024 11:14

Havoc, I'm glad your BP is back to normal. I have a BP monitor at home that syncs with an app on my iPhone, so it's easy to keep track of the numbers. What medication did they put you on?

Deathray, I remember that bit. The show certainly has its funny moments. When I heard someone say oi, it was a police constable chasing a fleeing criminal, so the meaning makes sense.

The wedding shoe quest is over. The shoes DD ordered from Etsy have arrived and are lovely, with a low heel. She will wear them occasionally to get them broken in a bit. She's now shopping for earrings and a comb.

The forecast for tonight is still for 5-8 inches of snow. It's been two years since we had that much. We usually cook out on Saturday night, but that won't be possible, so DH is making baked ham with a brown sugar and spice glaze and potatoes au gratin with Gruyere cheese.

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 06/01/2024 11:43

Hope you're ok Havoc.

Good grief Death! That is bad. They can hardly compensate someone who's already dead. A little too late, really, even if they do admit fault. Shocking.

The shoes sounds nice MissC.

I'm de-christmassing the place today. I'm usually sad about it but today the sun is out, it feels quite bright and cheery and not Christmassy at all.

Deathraystare · 06/01/2024 17:59

@MallardsMoorhensAndLethe ·

They are dragging their feet with the compensation. I hear the police may look at the case now (or cases). I felt very sorry for the Indian Lady who had a mental breakdown and had ECT (yes, still very much used). She now cannot remember any of her childhood.

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 06/01/2024 18:14

It's terrible how companies treat the staff who works for them Death.

HildaTablet · 06/01/2024 18:51

The truly horrendous and utterly unforgivable thing about the PO scandal was that the PO executives reached a point where they knew the Horizon system wasn’t working properly and was stuffed with bugs. They just wouldn’t admit it. And they preferred to let the post-masters and -mistresses take the blame.

Sorry to go on about it!

MissConductUS · 06/01/2024 19:19

I’m taking the decorations off the tree so DH can put it back in the attic tomorrow.

The snowstorm hasn’t quite reached us yet, but will soon.

We lost all water pressure about an hour ago. This happens once every year or two. I finally got through to the town water department and they don’t know where the water mains break is, but lots of people have reported it. So I can’t take a shower, wash dishes or do laundry. With a blizzard on the way.

Glad you had a nice walk Lemons

Good your DD loves the shoes MissC

Yes really awful over the Post Office, its shocking what gets successfully covered up.

Thought in night I don't think DH must have added 2 things to DSs birthday presents and they must still be in the cupboard. It took about 10 minutes to get DH to understand, kept saying not possible, then suddenly ah you are right, found them and could give to DS.

Went swimming - full of hyper boys and jacuzzi presumably single dads who did not supervise at all. So called it a day at 68 lengths and 1 jacuzzi and came back and cleaned downstairs bathroom.

Collected 2 parcels, very pleased the velvet skirt is the right size and got a lovely candle in a china pot with flowers and gold leaf. I was trying to resist buying it but fell in love. Have a cup in the same series and saucer and DH also has a cup.

Lemonsandlemonade · 06/01/2024 20:23

Attached only photos I took of walk yesterday… can’t get over the blossom on the tree.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/01/2024 21:41

Hi everyone ☺️
BP is still a bit all over the place, bit still much lower than before.
Lemons, yes, was trying not to panic Tuesday evening, but when I was faced with the prospect of being admitted because it kept climbing I was definitely worried.
Tillly, I still feel fine. I think that's the part that's unnerving.
Death, do you feel unwell at all? For me, it should regulate as my body sheds all the fluid from pregnancy and surgery. The medication is meant for short-term until then.
Miss, that app/monitor set-up sounds great!

Mid-wife didn't visit after all this past week as has become sick but I did get examined Tuesday night in hospital by an OBGYN who practises with mine (lucky!), have been reporting via email to midwife and have in-person appt with obgyn on Monday. So, I feel I'm on the radar and not slipping through the cracks. I'm lucky. 🤞

MrsFloof · 06/01/2024 23:27

Lovely blossom Lemons very early.

Glad you are being well monitored Havoc hope things continue to improve.

MissConductUS · 07/01/2024 00:06

Lemons, those blossoms are amazing. Are you having a warm winter? That’s a lovely view in the first picture.

Havoc, I’m glad your BP is mostly under control. Mine jumps around a lot, which is why I have the monitor. It’s an OMRON with Bluetooth and you can get them on Amazon if you want to upgrade.

We still have no water pressure so we got a takeaway and ate on paper plates. I hope they get it fixed overnight. It’s snowing fairly hard now.

I have learned two more British slang terms, nonce and nugget. Nonce is simple enough, but I’m finding nugget harder to pin down.

OP posts:
MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 07/01/2024 01:06

I don't know nugget MissC, unless it means a small thing like with chicken nuggets. A nugget of gold (I've heard it in films) would be a small thing, don't think it's an official measure though. Then there's a nugget of truth, which is like saying a grain of truth, ie a bit. Don't think I've heard it in any other ways. I didn't even think of it as slang but I suppose it is if it stands in for something else. Its interesting seeing my own language through someone else's eyes. Nonce is a paedo. Have you been watching crime dramas? They're always best on the first watch through when you've no idea who did it (whatever "it" was).
