School dinner ladys wearing uniform in playground

I work at a local primary school where I know a few parents who are dinner ladys i keep noticing they wear their uniform when dropping their own kids off and then they go home and then come back at lunchtime. Do you feel this is appropriate. Im not sure whether to mention it to our head

From a hygiene side I understand it but its really no different from people in the health industry wearing their uniform before work. Honestly the food industry has higher standards, most nurses don't change their foot ware before going on a ward were as food factory it's a must. I think your reasoning for showing off is petty though.

Don’t be facetious. It’s pretty obvious that the food hygiene standards in a commercial kitchen are different to those in a domestic setting.

We passed ours (5 stars) with flying colours. We all wear our own clothes to work. Next time you are in a cafe take a good look around.

Ducksinthebath · 26/09/2023 12:00

I get the hygiene concern (though I think it's way over the top), but they're showing off by wearing their dinner lady outfits in the playgound? That's crazy.

They are probably about to go into the kitchen and start prepping.

I wouldn't care, I come home from work and cook with my work clothes on!

I’ve had a change of heart OP. I think you should definitely bring this to the attention of the Headteacher and state the reasons exactly as you have on the thread, literally word for word and then come back and let us know how you got on.

I agree with this. Please tell the head teacher and report back.

FWIW, my mum was a dinner-lady. I can confirm it gave her huge amounts of kudos. She would drop it into every single conversation. She wore her uniform everywhere, always just in case she bumped into an old childhood friend and wanted to show off about her job. All the other mums were insanely jealous.

mayorofcasterbridge · 26/09/2023 12:04

God the snarky responses here! Hope you all feel good about yourselves.

It's my understanding that dinner staff are supposed to change into their uniform at work, for hygiene reasons. The kitchen supervisor should be dealing with this.

Perhaps people should refrain from commenting on things they know nothing about!!

hiredandsqueak · 26/09/2023 12:04

The kitchen staff at dd's primary started work as soon as school opened (as children could knock and request a particular sandwich as they went into school) so parents who worked in the kitchen dropped children off and started work so would make sense to wear the uniform (no logos or hoodies) If they were still wearing them on pick up I would just assume they hadn't been home after kitchen had closed and would also assume they would wear a clean uniform next day. Not sure though that I noticed and if I had I wouldn't have been jealous.

They have our logo school hoodies on and then its like a chef white type of uniform I just think is it showing off in the playground to other parents bringing them attention /questions along with it not being hygienic. As they prepare food and serve it

Showing off? 😂😂

If you have hygiene concerns that's one thing.

mayorofcasterbridge · 26/09/2023 12:06

It is somewhat dickish to think they are "showing off" - it's nuts, actually.

OP wasn't raising a hygiene issue.

So we are 'snarky' and you have completely overlooked OP who has made this thread specifically to bitch about dinner ladies showing off in their uniforms Confused

Every day this site just gets weirder

Viviennemary · 26/09/2023 12:14

I am nowhere near fanatical about cleanliness but I thought you would change into a clean uniform for work and not wear it all morning.

I am wondering if the dinner lady is in secret cult with some carefully selected 'school mums' and they all put their dressing gowns on and worship the head teacher and plan on having secret swingers parties with each mums partner? And worse still give a judgemental look?

That wouldn't bother me however seeing our dinner ladies standing at the side off school in uniform smoking does bother me. It was actually my dd that pointed them out thankfully she has packed lunch now.

ConsumedByCake · 26/09/2023 12:17

Yes, OP - please, please mention it to the Head. Don't forget to include the bit about showing off. Then pop back here and let us know how it went.

User474738473747322 · 26/09/2023 12:18

Is there a possibility they’ve just worked breakfast club before school and going home again before coming back for lunch? The chef at my kids primary does breakfast club then lunch, but she’s in most of the day anyway!

otherwise, I get your point from a hygiene point of view! If you worked in a restaurant I’m sure you wouldn’t be allowed to wear it before working!

JustPressRed · 26/09/2023 12:19

Don't get this? Are you saying they shouldn't be wearing their uniforms outside of the school?

If so, it's nowhere near as concerning as seeing hospital workers out and about in their uniforms. We were out for Sunday lunch this week and there was genuinely a guy at the bar in theatre scrubs, with his NHS badge around his neck, stating that he was an operating theatre practitioner. I just hope he changed when he was next in theatre!

MrsPinkSky · 26/09/2023 12:19

Showing off?? 🤣🤣🤣

OP, are you our resident dinner lady who's been in the job 3 weeks and starts repeated threads about it?

Rosscameasdoody · 26/09/2023 12:20

MartinChuzzlewit · 26/09/2023 11:44

I know hospital staff can’t wear their uniform into work, they have to bring it in a bag and change, because it’s an infection prevention risk. I’m not sure this applies for food hygiene though?

Our local hospital doesn’t seem to have those rules. I was visiting a relative over a period of a few weeks in hospital and in that time I saw staff standing at the bus stop still in uniform, and in the local supermarket at lunch times. I’ve even seen staff wearing theatre uniform in the hospital cafe. Best practice for food hygiene is for overalls etc, to stay in the kitchen environment - if the dinner ladies are those who cook or serve then I would have thought the OP has a point.

This can't be for real? Showing off? Honestly?
Speechless!

Happen at most schools I would have thought !! 🤣🤣🤣

This says far more about you than them. You're clearly a very insecure and jealous person who resents the dinner ladies so ascribe as motive to them to justify your bitter jealousy. You need to get a life and find something positive and constructive to focus your mind on.

Allofthisisasimulation · 26/09/2023 12:22

If it's a uniform they wear for hygiene reasons then they should only be wearing it while on duty.

peerie · 26/09/2023 12:23

No wonder no one has any sort of resilience 🙄
