School dinner ladys wearing uniform in playground

I work at a local primary school where I know a few parents who are dinner ladys i keep noticing they wear their uniform when dropping their own kids off and then they go home and then come back at lunchtime. Do you feel this is appropriate. Im not sure whether to mention it to our head

Luckily my job doesn’t have a uniform, because I would definitely be wearing it dropping my children to school. Not showing off, just going to work.

Do you have a job?

The OP says she works at a local primary school.

I'm pretty sure she's a dinner lady and this is about her 5th thread on the school in the last couple of weeks.

gogomoto · 26/09/2023 12:27

If they are kitchen staff I suspect they are going straight into the kitchen. If they are supervising staff it doesn't matter does it!

They have our logo school hoodies on and then its like a chef white type of uniform I just think is it showing off in the playground to other parents bringing them attention /questions along with it not being hygienic. As they prepare food and serve it

Also I'm sure they wear an apron when they are serving. So there really isn't a hygiene issue that makes any sense.

Heronwatcher · 26/09/2023 12:30

I think you need to find a hobby TBH. You do realise that most people who work with food don’t fully change their clothes every time they go in or out of the kitchen, they (hopefully) wash their hands and follow hygiene rules about things like gloves, chopping boards, cross contamination of food, hair, piercings, plasters, allergies, as they should but I can’t really see an issue? What exactly do you consider to be the problem? They aren’t performing open heart surgery.

Neverjudgeabookbyitscover · 26/09/2023 12:31

So it's the "showing off" that bothers you more than the hygiene?
I don't think anyone would care or even notice if her hoodie said "Something Primary School".

As for the hygiene thing, I agree that is grim if she's dealing with food.
Who knows what she does between school drop off and food dealings.
Nappy changes (if she has a younger child), walking her dog (if she has one) and picking up after it, going to the toilet (regardless)........ we just don't know.

Pebblesontheside · 26/09/2023 12:31

I assume the op thinks about from an infection control point of view, and I agree with this. I always when it think it when I see care workers in their uniforms in the supermarket - it’s an overall, part of your ppe.

Serendipitoushedgehog · 26/09/2023 12:31

Obviously this is a very silly example, but I remember reading something interesting about fashion and how it's influenced by economic circumstance.

So, pre the 2008 credit crash, the stay at home yummy mummy Boden look was valued by the middle classes because it indicated that the family was wealthy enough for the mother to be a SAHM. However, as unemployment grew, a more professional look was valued at the school gate because it indicated that the mother had a job, at a time when people were being made redundant.

What's deemed to be "showing off" at the school gate entirely depends on the context.

Buxtonwaters · 26/09/2023 12:31

Perhaps you need to find yourself a job and stop worrying about others doing theirs.

Showing off???

Lottie4 · 26/09/2023 12:35

I'm an MDS, luckily our only uniform is our lanyard and optional tabard for keeping our own clothes clean.

I wouldn't want to wear uniform in my personal time, but understand why some might as we often have to break off what they're doing to go back to school, and personally I wouldn't want to have to worry about carrying my uniform around if say, I went to town/saw a friend.

It might only be 75-90 mins but being an MDS is a full on workout, schools struggle to recruit here and 20% staff leave within the first week. I get where you're coming from OP, but I think most would be grateful to have their children reasonably well looked after - if we're short there is no extra cover, which means it's impossible to deal with every child needing assistance.

Read the first line of the OP. She has a job at the local primary school.

I know MN is mortally offended by women doing anything deemed to be "attention seeking", but this is mad even by the usual standards.

I guarantee no one is "showing off" about working in a school kitchen. If they are preparing the food, it's not OK, but it's far more likely to be that they're tight for time.

this is either a piss take, you need help, or you need to install a hose down station or partake in a full change of clothing like a beekeeper every time you enter the kitchen to feed anyone.

Dixiechickonhols · 26/09/2023 12:41

If they prep food then they will be starting work after dropping child off. School lunch can start as early as 11.30. They are called general assistants in our area. So uniform and hoodie over? Seems normal to me. There won’t be changing rooms and staff lockers at the school.

Puncturedbicycle85 · 26/09/2023 12:41

Yeah that’s really jealousy-inducing. Just like I get green with envy when I’m on the bus and see someone with a Tesco uniform on. Show-offs.

Cockmigrant · 26/09/2023 12:42

They won't be doing it to "show off". Fucking hell - you sound like my aunty, everyone's "showing off". You can't do a fucking thing without her accusing you of "showing off".

However, I do think it is grim from a hygiene point of view if they are preparing and serving food.
Are they really coming in in the uniform and then going home and coming back to school at lunchtime?? Or do they come in to school, drop off child and then go straight to the kitchen?

I really don't think that someone wearing a uniform for hygiene purposes should be putting it on hours before actually beginning to handle food.

Sunshinenrain · 26/09/2023 12:43

What is your role in the school?

Do you get changed to cook your dinner?

"Showing off" give over 🤣

Our local hospital doesn’t seem to have those rules. I was visiting a relative over a period of a few weeks in hospital and in that time I saw staff standing at the bus stop still in uniform, and in the local supermarket at lunch times. I’ve even seen staff wearing theatre uniform in the hospital cafe. Best practice for food hygiene is for overalls etc, to stay in the kitchen environment - if the dinner ladies are those who cook or serve then I would have thought the OP has a point.

Those staff may be going home, as they are allowed to leave hospital in work clothes as they’ll be washed.

Also theatre scrubs will be changed in a new surgery

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/09/2023 12:45

Like me, Op, you’d hate the man who walks along the prom here picking up litter by hand, whatever the weather.

I loved him until I saw him wearing his uniform hi-viz home on the bus. Flash bastard.

heyathere · 26/09/2023 12:45

The most hilarious part is how the hygiene reason was only tacked on at PP's suggestion. They do a valuable job, but I can assure you you are the only one feeling jealous of dinner ladies in the playground. 😅

Lordofmyflies · 26/09/2023 12:45

Unless they are walking up to school with a hairnet, apron and gloves on, I think you are being completely unreasonable and need to get a job ( but not in the school kitchen - show off!)

Tribevibes · 26/09/2023 12:45

I don’t get it. They’re not going to wear the hoody along with their kitchen uniform at the same time? Honestly. Live and let live. My bet is you’re a TA and you take great pleasure in being one up in the school hierarchy. (I am a TA by the way, but not a twatty one and I love our dinner ladies, they’re like my fave school people 🤣).
