School dinner ladys wearing uniform in playground

Euribia · 26/09/2023 10:12

I work at a local primary school where I know a few parents who are dinner ladys i keep noticing they wear their uniform when dropping their own kids off and then they go home and then come back at lunchtime. Do you feel this is appropriate. Im not sure whether to mention it to our head

OP posts:

Are there any other jobs where it is apparently absolutely ok to slate a person about it - or is it just dinner ladies?

If I were a dinner lady, I’d feel quite shit about myself reading some of these condescending comments.

unique78 · 26/09/2023 12:47

Dinnerladies are supposed to bring their workwear to school, get changed at school (usually in a changing room off the kitchen), and when their shift ends they are supposed to change back into their normal clothes and take their workwear home to wash daily. They are also supposed to leave their work shoes at work.

It's all about hygiene and cross contamination, and the kitchen staff would (usually) be in big trouble if they hung around outside the school building in their uniform. Schools/catering firms are generally pretty strict about this policy.

Not yours OP though, by the sound of it! People are mocking you, but if you're serving a child with a severe allergy, accidental cross contamination can be very serious.

Like me, Op, you’d hate the man who walks along the prom here picking up litter by hand, whatever the weather.

I loved him until I saw him wearing his uniform hi-viz home on the bus. Flash bastard.

GrinGrinGrin yes, report him immediately. Who does he think he is?

🤣🤣🤣🤣 my favourite so far. I love this thread @Euribia can you please make sure you start one at least once a day.

Tribevibes · 26/09/2023 12:50

It’s an unclear thread really. Are they kitchen staff or lunchtime supervision staff?

Lemonyyy · 26/09/2023 12:50

This cannot be real 😂

inappropriateraspberry · 26/09/2023 12:53

I cook at home in the clothes I've worn all day - no one has become ill from it! 😆 How would it be different at school? Do you think they should change into clean clothes in the kitchen? What a weird post.

If you read the OP’s comments (there are only 2 of them), she says that the lunch staff prepare and serve food.

I don’t get it. They’re not going to wear the hoody along with their kitchen uniform at the same time? Honestly. Live and let live. My bet is you’re a TA and you take great pleasure in being one up in the school hierarchy. (I am a TA by the way, but not a twatty one and I love our dinner ladies, they’re like my fave school people 🤣).

I love you! Well said!

Flyingfup · 26/09/2023 12:53

If they are preparing food they don’t magically appear along with the food at lunchtime. They may not have time to go home and get changed.

Fallingthroughclouds · 26/09/2023 12:54

Hospital scrubs and a kitchen uniform covered by a hoodie, until in the kitchen is really not comparable.

Unless the dinner ladies are dealing with bodily fluids and viruses of course. If this was the case I'd want to see the menu.

Sueveneers · 26/09/2023 12:55

It doesn't matter if they serve or supervise. They'd wear an apron to do so, and I doubt they wear their apron on the way to work. The hygiene argument is irrelevant unless they are wearing their apron and rubber gloves in the car.

DRS1970 · 26/09/2023 12:56

I would seriously stop giving it any thought and go do something less boring instead

KeepNameChanging81 · 26/09/2023 12:59

Wow issues.

GalileoHumpkins · 26/09/2023 12:59

I just think is it showing off in the playground to other parents bringing them attention

Ah give over you numpty.

rooinspace · 26/09/2023 12:59

If they’re involved in food prep I would be raising it. It’s unhygienic, and to do so so blatantly in front of the eventual consumers is not acceptable and suggests they don’t realise how unhygienic it is and need further training.

When I worked in McDonald’s about 10 yesrs ago it was a disciplinary to wear uniform to work for these reasons. Customers aren’t to know whether you’ve just changed before leaving the home or worn your uniform to walk the dog/visit aunt Gladys in the care home/to drop rubbish off at the tip en route! I would seriously hate to see this somewhere I was eating.

Prescottdanni123 · 26/09/2023 13:00

Are you sure they are going home? The dinner ladies at the school I work at start at 8:45 in the morning getting everything ready

Of course it's not unhygienic! They'd wear an apron and gloves, she's not wearing them in the car! And as others on this thread have said, they've seen McDonalds workers in uniform on the bus or train. It's normal.

They have our logo school hoodies on and then its like a chef white type of uniform I just think is it showing off in the playground to other parents bringing them attention /questions along with it not being hygienic. As they prepare food and serve it

Surely if they are actually preparing and cooking food they would start work shortly after the bell goes?

starfishmummy · 26/09/2023 13:05

jay55 · 26/09/2023 11:30

Do they even have anywhere to change?

Thinking thst myself. Probably only the toilets which could be potentially worse than chang ing at home. .

crochetmonkey74 · 26/09/2023 13:08

Yes I would OP - call the head- or better still stage a sit in until they listen to you. Do call the local paper and look angry/ sad in the photo at the same time. Maybe give GB News a ring or call Nick Ferrari on LBC to express your disgust.

These people just can't be allowed to go about their lives unbothered- get on the case immediately

Rosejasmine · 26/09/2023 13:09

Lunchtime supervisors, no problem. School cooks in kitchen - yes inappropriate for hygiene reasons.

Dixiechickonhols · 26/09/2023 13:10

All McDonald’s staff wear their uniform to work not change there where dc works. There’s rules about no false nails and no earrings and hair tied up but nothing about wearing uniform outside premises. They pop out to cars in car park with some orders anyway.

smartiesneberhadtheanswer · 26/09/2023 13:10

'Showing off' - what on earth would they be showing off about 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 26/09/2023 13:11

Some people clearly think they're hilarious on this thread. They're not.
