Should I tell our neighbour we can see her through the window?

sendinganangel · 07/09/2023 09:01

So often when I go up to get my daughter sorted in her room, my neighbour is visible from what I assume is her room.

She has 2 young children of her own for context

My daughter is 4 and said this morning 'look mummy, the neighbour lady has her boobies out' Grin

Would you tell your neighbour you can see them? Do you think she knows this and just isn't putting curtails up

I and my husband have also seen her in the evenings, when we've put the bin out or something... she will be standing there at her sink washing up and appears completely naked... definitely topless

We live across from her so can see in

I disagree-naked in your bathroom with frosted windows - fine; naked downstairs doing the washing up - not fine. You don’t have an expectation of privacy and you know you can be seen. More than a little exhibitionist IMO.

I would drop a note-“no problem with you walking round your own home naked but would appreciate you shutting the blinds as it’s becoming a bit of a talking point amongst the children, thanks. All at number 10.”

That's perfect

Drummend01 · 07/09/2023 10:13

I’d drop a note (with your door number and name so it’s not creepy) and just say ‘Wasn’t really sure how best to bring this up but we can regularly see you in your house unclothed and wasn’t sure if you realised. Totally get it though, us mums barely have time to dress ourselves!”

and if she chooses to ignore the note because she doesn’t care then just don’t look and explain to your 4 year old that it’s just a body, not a big deal. There’s ways worse things a neighbour could be doing than washing up topless

TwigTheWonderKid · 07/09/2023 10:14

Assuming she's not standing in the window suggestively rubbing her tits or pole dancing then she is perfectly entitled to go about her daily business naked in her own home.

Why are we Brits so ashamed of our naked bodies?

SnakesandKnives · 07/09/2023 10:14

Have exactly the same issue. Lovely Italian couple who live opposite but no bedroom curtains. He has a gigantic tummy which is often framed on the window late at night and she has boobs bigger than my head. At Christmas they were both nicely ringed by sparkly Christmas lights round the window each evening 😂

If she's the kind of person who is very comfortable naked (ie doing the washing up tits akimbo) I doubt she's the kind of person who's going to give a toss anyone can see her.

I say this as someone who regularly wanders my house naked and doesn't much care if someone sees me. If someone put a note through my door I'd probably just laugh.

I agree with this. I’m pretty comfortable naked in my own home and will jump out of the way If I spot someone coming past but at the same time am sure the occasional person may have caught a glimpse. I don’t do it for kicks but I’m also comfortable in my own home.

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 07/09/2023 10:24

Why are you looking through someone else’s window? Seems odd that you keep staring into her house. She’s legally entitled to be as naked as she wants in her home and garden so long as she’s not performing sexual acts in front of you. Being naked in itself is not a sexual act. Stop looking through her windows. And I say that as someone who is entirely uncomfortable with nakedness.

gogomoto · 07/09/2023 10:35

Can't see the problem myself, do you regularly stare out of your windows directly at your neighbour? I certainly don't, it's rude to deliberately look through someone's window.

I'm not overlooked admittedly but I walk around my house make sometimes, my house I can do what I want surely

sendinganangel · 07/09/2023 09:15

I guess my next question is, what if she doesn't care or refuses to put up any blinds etc?

It's not very nice having a child see her and be caught off guard by the local naked lady

Ignore it. It won't kill your child to see a naked or half naked woman.

I'd send her a note saying:

We can see your tits from my bedroom window
My 4yo comments on them whenever it happens and will.not be distracted
If you could please pull the curtains across that would be great as it gets a bit dull discussing your tits every other morning
Kind regards

If I received that note, I'd wonder what the hell was preventing the neighbour from drawing their own curtains.

CrabbiesGingerBeer · 07/09/2023 10:39

LondonPapa · 07/09/2023 09:36

Why should she change or go out of pocket to suit you? She is on private property doing private things with a reasonable expectation to privacy. You're peeping over and staring at her tits. Just explain to your child what the situation is and move on. If your neighbour is comfortable, let her be.

Because doing this intentionally is a criminal offence.

VeridicalVagabond · 07/09/2023 10:40

CrabbiesGingerBeer · 07/09/2023 10:36

Yes, because I'd love to see the court that would bother convicting me for indecent exposure because someone took the time to peer through my window to watch me hoovering naked. Or the police officer that would take someone seriously if they rang 999 and said "I looked through my neighbour's window and she's naked! I'm offended and I'd like you to arrest her".

Nudism is legal so I'd just say I'm a nudist. Problem solved.

my82my · 07/09/2023 10:43

I wouldn't say anything. I walk around my house all the time in knickers and nothing else and im guessing if my neighbours are looking through the window or into my conservatory they can see my boobs.
I couldn't care less they're just boobs and its boiling, no different to sunbathing topless.
I'd find it funny if my neighbour put a note through but I wouldn't stop.

ZadocPDederick · 07/09/2023 10:43

CrabbiesGingerBeer · 07/09/2023 10:36

As that link makes clear, for any prosecution to happen it would be necessary to prove that the alleged perpetrator intended that someone would see them and be caused alarm or distress. It would be really difficult to prove that in relation to someone going about their daily business at home; even if a neighbour has asked them to stop and they don't, they would have a defence on the basis that they don't intend the neighbour to see them and they have no problem with the neighbour drawing their own curtains or whatever.

I suspect nowadays you would have a real problem convincing a court that seeing a naked body causes anyone alarm and distress, given what is on view regularly on beaches and the front of various magazines. I can't honestly see the CPS giving this the time of day.

How about close your own blinds/curtains and stop looking through peoples windows!

This is what I'm thinking. Stop peering over at her.

No, it isn't. It is only an offence if your intention is to cause alarm and distress.

Nudism is legal so I'd just say I'm a nudist. Problem solved.

It is intent specific and if you live in a remote area with no regular passers by, you may well be able to demonstrate there is no intent. If you were in a terrace in the middle of a city with a floor to ceiling window directly onto the street, the case may be different.

However, there is no blanket law that ‘nudism is legal’. Ask the naked rambler how the ‘nudism is legal’ argument worked out for him. (Hint: it didn’t).

my82my · 07/09/2023 10:52

A woman walking around her own house with her boobs out is the not the same as someone standing in there window and flashing people on purpose.
It's like the sort of people who complain about topless sunbathing. If it bothers you that much change your daughters window to frosted glass.

CrabbiesGingerBeer · 07/09/2023 10:53

ZadocPDederick · 07/09/2023 10:46

No, it isn't. It is only an offence if your intention is to cause alarm and distress.

Which is why I said if asked to stop and continuing to do it.

It is very arguable there is no ‘alarm or distress’ if the naked person doesn’t know they can be seen.

Once they’ve been specifically told ‘what you are doing is upsetting me’, it’s harder to argue you had no idea you were upsetting someone.

NeunundneunzigHorseBallonz · 07/09/2023 10:55

My theory:- If you can see her, then she can see you just as well. (Assuming she isn’t vision-impaired.) She is likely to think that this is a You problem.

It's not some random man or lone woman with a kink though

This is a busy family woman with two young children. Call be bias but that doesn't sound like someone after a 'kick' of neighbours and their kids seeing you naked!

Oh right so men and lone women can have a kink.
I'm a "lone woman" and don't wander around with my tits out in front of windows.
So a "busy family woman" is less likely to have a kink than a random man or lone woman.....

At least you acknowledge your bias...

The woman should not be naked in front of windows where she can be seen by people outside. It is a bit embarrassing but I'd probably just go roudn and have a chat with her. Ask her if she's aware. Say your child can see her and that you don't want your child to see other people naked and could she please be aware in future.

WeWereInParis · 07/09/2023 10:56

@CrabbiesGingerBeer that link specifies that genitals must be exposed - are breasts included in that?
