Whether it’s personal or well known, which unsolved case makes your brain sound like dial up?

Although ancient i know, mine is Jack the Ripper.. not only because it conjures up very dark images associated with the impoverished gaslit foggy streets of London, but 2 of my ancestors were involved as witnesses in the case.

OooIcouldCrushAGrape · 02/09/2023 20:24

Kendrick Johnson
Found dead in a gym mat. His poor mother seeing pictures of how he looked when found and then finding out his organs were removed and he was stuffed with newspaper. I dont think his death was an accident

Melanie Hall- years after her disappearance, her remains were found on the side of a motorway on a significant date (for me), and that stretch of road goes right past a hamlet that a few of my family live in. So I always wonder what happened to her, and how many people would've passed her, before she was found. They still don't know who killed her.

Claudia Lawrence- my friend is a similar age and grew up (and still lives) around a 5 minute walk away. Apparently there's a widely accepted local theory about who killed her, and that she's under the university building that was being built at the time.
The CCTV from next to her house the night she disappeared is chilling- where the hooded figure sees someone in the distance and stops.

The Jamieson family in 2009.

Going to follow this thread, I find these somewhat fascinating but it creeps me out too.

I’ll start with mine: Spontaneous Combustion. Part of me is like there’s no way, but how are whole bodies found burned to a crisp without anything else around them being at the very least scorched. You can’t burn a body and THEN move it, so what happened?

Sorry if this has already been said but thankfully it's not "real".This used to scare the living shite out of me for years especially because I have a nerve thing that makes my thighs tingle and sometimes burn. I was convinced that I was going to spontaneously combust.

Anyway, it's something known as the wick effect. The cause of the fire can differ, often a cigarette. The burning person may not put it out because they've already died of natural causes. The heat intensity is low and they burn like an inside-out candle. The low intensity heat makes their body fat melt into their clothing. The clothing acts as the wick. It all sounds pretty horrendous but if we accept that they're almost certainly already dead which is why they do nothing to stop the fire, it's just a bizarre and rather horrible thing. There is little to no damage around the victim because the heat has been so low.

What really scares me is, for all the above people someone knows what happened to each victim. It makes me wonder about the murderers daily lives, their family, their friends, their guilt, do they relive the day they took a life, how often do they think about their crime. They are someones neighbour or work colleague. They walk amongst us

Chippy4me · 02/09/2023 20:40

Anyone (especially children) who just go missing without a trace.

It worries me as it’s something that could happen to anyone you love.

Hopefully with SM and everyone recording everything then it will be much less common in the future.

Vulnerable Nóra Quoirin who went missing and was found dead in a Malaysian jungle by a stream

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-55338452

It is so implausible sometimes I find myself thinking like the local superstitions that jungle spirits lured her away from her family and took her as their own.

Poor girl just went wandering in unfamiliar surroundings,I honestly don't think it was more than that.

HolyHellaciousHeck · 02/09/2023 20:50

I think about Asha Degree who was a 9 year old American girl who disappeared from her rural house in 2000. According to her family she got up in the middle of the night, got dressed, packed a bag and slipped out of the house unnoticed by her parents or brother who were asleep; it was a cold, rainy winter night and she proceeded to walk along the edge of the highway. This is evidenced by two separate eye witnesses who were driving past. One stopped and tried to talk to her but she apparently ran into the woods. She's never been seen since but her bag was found.

HolyHellaciousHeck · 02/09/2023 20:51

What I find haunting about it is nobody knowing why Asha left when she did. She must have been so scared, heading out alone in the cold and dark and rain.

HolyHellaciousHeck · 02/09/2023 20:56

Also Kyron Horman. He vanished in such a small window of time from a busy primary school. A lot of online speculation about his stepmother but I think she loved him and in any case she didn't have time that morning to do anything nefarious. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Kyron_Horman

Iamtheonwandlonely · 02/09/2023 20:57

Philip Cairns.
He was 13 when he basically disappeared in to thin air on his way back to school in 1986.
I remember it so well as I had only started secondary myself.
And his bag was found later on in the lane that had already been searched.

I'd love to know what happened to Raonaid Murray.

She was stabbed to death near her house on a road I know well. The gardai may have hinted that they think a woman did it. There were a lot of 'shallow'' stabs. There have been several new appeals for information where they suggested that whoever did this may have gone to the Uk, may be struggling to live with what he or she had done and may be using alcohol to cope. It sounded specific. If they have a suspect, why can't they just go to the uk and ask the UK police for assistance interviewing her?

I immediately thought of Raonaid. I'm from the area too.

Amandasummers · 02/09/2023 21:05

I feel terrible not recalling his name but the boy who was caught on cctv several times on his bike and ended up with no clothes on and then died in mysterious circumstances. It’s baffling

I've thought about this a lot coz everyone is different.

Myself I know if I killed someone by accident and/or someone completely innocent I would feel guilty but I know that if I killed someone I wanted/needed to for the right reasons I would never feel guilt. So I've always wondered about what others think

Princessbananahamock · 02/09/2023 21:06

The Shelley Morgan murder young mum not found for months still unsolved, got to be 35/40 years ago. She lived on our road.

The case of Elisa Lam who was found dead in a water tank on a ship always freaked me out as well, especially the footage of her in the lift running from something 😳 so scary

The water tank was on the roof of the Cecil Hotel in LA.

It was a water tank on Hotel Cecil in NYC. There's a netflix documentary. Fascinating story. I think she was bipolar :(

Is it meant to be one of men who drank in the nags and is in a relationship with her friend?

I fell down a Google hole reading about the case, that group of ‘friends’ defo know what happened, it’s sickening!

Would also love closure for Ben Needhams and Andrew Gormans families and selfishly the Madeline McCann and Jon Bennett cases.

KnickerlessParsons · 02/09/2023 21:10

The spy guy who was found dead, tied up in a hold-all in a bath. Gareth someone I think.

Also Innes Ewart who was found dead at the bottom of a multi storey car park in London.

wordlesie · 02/09/2023 21:10

My friend at university disappeared. This was 7 years ago and it made the local news then. He took a cab into a park and theres CCTV of him in the cab, then he got out and was never seen again. No trace. We expect he went there to meet a grinder date as it was a popular place for gay men to meet up.

He was an international student from a very poor family from an underdeveloped country and his parents spoke no English. It only made local news for a month then nothing since. His mother was so desperate trying to find him, but ran out of money and had to return home. His father died shortly after. I google his name frequently but theres nothing. No-one is looking for him it seems and it's very sad.

Lifesapurpledream · 02/09/2023 21:11

The Rey Rivera case is also very bizarre as he’d travelled at speed through a roof and was only found when people noticed the hole. Very creepy. As if he was dropped from the sky.
