What’s the scariest unsolved mystery you know?

Whether it’s personal or well known, which unsolved case makes your brain sound like dial up?

I’ll start with mine: Spontaneous Combustion. Part of me is like there’s no way, but how are whole bodies found burned to a crisp without anything else around them being at the very least scorched. You can’t burn a body and THEN move it, so what happened?

The death of Noah Donohoe.💙

The death of Noah Donohoe.💙

I remember hearing of that when it just happened, and when the theory was he’d hit his head and wandered off. No idea there’d been evidence found of him sneaking out in the night and potentially getting caught up in (what I’m assuming is) gangs

Such a tragedy 💙

I'd love to know what happened to Raonaid Murray.

She was stabbed to death near her house on a road I know well. The gardai may have hinted that they think a woman did it. There were a lot of 'shallow'' stabs. There have been several new appeals for information where they suggested that whoever did this may have gone to the Uk, may be struggling to live with what he or she had done and may be using alcohol to cope. It sounded specific. If they have a suspect, why can't they just go to the uk and ask the UK police for assistance interviewing her?

I was about to say the same, the only thing more scary than the circumstances itself is the fact it could happen again as no one was held accountable. The fact that someone out there knows what happened to thay child and is saying nothing is frightening.

TheFutureMrsWolowitz · 02/09/2023 18:31

The disappearance of the Beaumont children was a big thing when I was young.

Plus Madeleine MccCan of course.

Any disappearance of young children realy.

The case of Elisa Lam who was found dead in a water tank on a ship always freaked me out as well, especially the footage of her in the lift running from something 😳 so scary

That sounds very specific! I’d say they have someone in mind, but not enough evidence to detain. Probably hoping he or she would have a change of heart and turn themselves in at this point.

This happened a few hours away from me and I have never heard of it until now. Absolutely mental. And to think her poor sister is the one who found her 💔

Missy Bevers, the footage of her (presumed) murderer walking about the church and then knowing they killed her.

Jennifer Kesse, again they have the suspect on CCTV, but no actual footage of his face as he had the good luck to be walking past fence posts which obscured him.

Alastair Wilson, shot dead on his doorstep. His wife had spoken to the man who did it and so did he. Guy clearly wasn’t in a rush but never been caught. Only recently has a potential motive come to light.

Penny Bell, stabbed to death in the car park of a leisure centre in west London. Suspect who must have been covered in blood manages to escape without being noticed. No real suspects/motive.

Janet Brown, found dead in her house on the Oxfordshire border. It was staged to look like a burglary, a burglar actually rang into Crimewatch and said no way would a real
burglar leave a scene like that. I believe they found some connection from DNA from a robbery at a jewellers but seems to have come to nothing. Again, no suspects/motive.

I remember this one too!! The leading theory (and the one that’s most likely imo) is that she suffered a psychotic break. Her family said she had been diagnosed with something but I can’t remember what it was, and that she was unmedicated. They didn’t want her going traveling but couldn’t legally stop her.

The fact that she was only found because people in the hotel reported the water tasting odd is absolutely sickening

This isn’t a mystery to anyone except me probably.
Maybe 20 years ago (though may be more recently), I saw on the news that the housekeeper for a parish priest in Norfolk died by falling on a knife that was sticking up in the dishwasher (I think this is what happened, or something similar).
Because I watched Father Ted at the time, I had images in my mind of a bleak parochial house with sinister goings on in my head.

That’s happened a few times. I always put knives point down in the dishwasher.

I'd give anything for poor little keith Bennett to be found. It's something I've always thought about. He needs to be brought home. My brain goes into overdrive wondering where he is on the moors

HennyPenny1234 · 02/09/2023 18:57

Cattle mutilations

It's been going on for a very long time and nobody has ever been seen nor caught

Bodies drained of all their blood, sometimes the spine removed amongst many other organs

No footprints or tyre marks, sometimes a chemical smell present

It's the biggest rabbit hole you'll ever go down

How in the dead of night are animals rounded up and slaughtered?

I'll also throw in Roswell and JFK

Absolutely, the Elisa Lam case is one of the creepiest mysteries I’ve ever heard about. Apparently a disease broke out around the same time right where the hotel she was found dead in is, and it’s called called Lam Elisa 😳😳 that lift video makes me shiver to think about

CaveMum · 02/09/2023 19:02

Spontaneous human combustion doesn’t exist. It’s something called “the wick effect” and is usually started by a cigarette, open fire, etc.

One case that sticks in my mind since reading about it, is that of Cheryl Grimmer who was 3 years old when she went missing on an Australian beach in 1970. She was with her 7yo brother at the time and to this day he, Ricki, blames himself for what happened.

For me it will always be the Madeline McCann case. I would love (for want of a better word) to know what happened to her before I die. That poor poor girl

MansfieldLark · 02/09/2023 19:05

Jonbenet Ramsey. Poor poor child. 😢

AncientBallerina · 02/09/2023 19:06

Sophie Toscan du Plantier
Of course there is a suspect who has been convicted in France but I wish to god that there was some incontrovertible evidence in Ireland that would prove who did it.

CaveMum · 02/09/2023 19:08

@AncientBallerina have you listened to the Crime Analyst podcast about Sophie’s case? It is well worth a listen.

rhino12345 · 02/09/2023 19:08

The Dupont de Ligonnès murders and disappearance.
It freaks me out that he could be anywhere in the world and you wouldn't know. They think he has changed his appearance and so people obviously wouldn't recognise him but it wasn't an especially well known case anyway.
They think he could be in South America but they don't know for sure.

This thread has just reminded me of the Andrew Gosden case and the fact they made some arrests after years and years of nothing. But that was in 2021 and I don’t think there’s been any updates?
