Labour should run the check the moment they're in power and beat the Tories with it for years.

I hope they do.

I think they probably need to do the equivalent in a lot of areas!

Notonthestairs · 19/08/2023 15:52

"The only group where the Tories retain a lead is those with no financial worries at all."

Sounds about right!

jgw1 · 19/08/2023 20:13

I visited a country show in a part of the country I am not very familiar with, and the background of whose population is rather different to mine.

Amongst the produce and crafts there was a poetry competition. The winning entry being on the subject of parties.

That is why I don't think the Tories have a chance in the next election.

Well some ro all on results.

I'm on holiday so not following much politics but reading!

pointythings · 20/08/2023 17:27

This isn't surprising though, is it? Humane and pragmatic are words this lot don't want to hear.

BIossomtoes · 20/08/2023 17:33

Quite the reverse. Any hint of humanity is to be stamped on before it can take hold.

A poll in the Times found that

"Pledging to leave the ECHR at the election would lose twice as many votes for the Conservatives as they would gain from the promise."

There’s a silver lining somewhere in that quote @DuncinToffee. at least it shows a sizeable part of the populations aren’t complete maniacs.

We can only hope, judging some of the threads on MN the sheer vitriol & awfulness of some posters depressingly I’m not totally convinced.

I now feel more certain that it will be in the Tory manifesto.

I did enjoy the exchange that went "I think we should leave such and such human rights body". reply "so which rights do you think we shouldn't have" answer "I didn't say I wanted to remove any rights".

dontcallmelen · 21/08/2023 16:49

Thank you jgw1 you made me laugh, must admit I really admire your tenacity on some of those threads.

I did enjoy being called a communist for stating facts about empty homes in England.

Stop the boats. Or maybe not. But also one of my 5 priorities is stop the boats. Did I mention that?

Yes it is a bloody complex problem Sunak - good to see you acknowledge that at last.
Maybe don't reduce it to a 3 word pledge and in future treat voters like they have a brain in their heads please.
Too much to ask? Probably.

I am sure Sunak met a voter once, much like he once met a working person.
