Public sector pay does not drive inflation or cost nearly as much as the government says it does. Thus is because for everyone on UC or other benefits the government claws back about 70p of every extra pound they pay out in extra income. They keep very quiet about this as do the opposition.

mibbelucieachwell · 16/08/2023 11:49

It really annoys me that the line that public sector pay rises cause inflation is so often unchallenged @elastamum . The government was very quick to cite the invasion of Ukraine as major cause of inflation, but we're more than a year on and the wholesale cost of gas has fallen so they can't use that to excuse their incompetence now. And it's funny how Brexit is never mentioned as one of the cause of inflation.

Notonthestairs · 16/08/2023 12:14

Barclay lying again.

But then this is the same man that claimed Johnson didn't tell lies so maybe he doesn't understand what lying is.

DuncinToffee · 16/08/2023 12:56

Yep nothing the government can do about the pay and conditions of public sector workers. Completely out of their hands.

Rishi Sunak in Leicester:

  • Warns against tax cuts, says govt has to ‘keep a lid’ on borrowing

  • Says it’s ‘hard’ to bring waiting lists down while doctors are striking. ‘There’s not a lot I can do about that’

  • Britain is on cusp of an ‘extraordinary AI revolution’

"Says it’s ‘hard’ to bring waiting lists down while doctors are striking. ‘There’s not a lot I can do about that’

So why didn't bring down the waiting lists when doctors weren't striking? It's done nothing but increase for over a decade - doctors haven't been on strike that long!

itsgettingweird · 16/08/2023 16:19

I really wish someone would say to him

"Waiting lists have been increasing for 10 years. Drs have been striking over the past 10 months. They are striking because of the increases in waiting lists and problems with the nhs. So how can it be drs striking that's the issue?"

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/08/2023 17:31

Lack of challenge by journalists in interviews is really frustrating. They’ve basically been allowed to get away with spending yesterday going hooray wages have risen to help with CoL and today going good job we didn’t give public sector workers pay rises because that’s helped inflation to fall. And then blamed staff for the waiting lists.

Pretty sure this winter is fucked. Those 900 beds which we should probably get most of by Jan are part of the 5000 that we were supposed to have by this winter.

Notonthestairs · 16/08/2023 17:47

"Those 900 beds which we should probably get most of by Jan are part of the 5000 that we were supposed to have by this winter."

Shouldn't be I know but I am quite shocked by that. For a moment I thought they might meet the medical professionals half way.

Even the Daily Mail has reported we need an additional 13,000 beds to support A&E.

"The NHS needs 13,000 more hospital beds to improve 999 response times and A&E waits, a damning report warns today.
A major shortage is putting lives at risk by slowing the rate at which patients can be picked up, admitted to hospital and treated.
The UK has lost almost 25,000 beds since 2010/11 and is now lagging behind most of Europe, according to the Royal College of Emergency Medicine's 'Beds in the NHS' report."

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10869433/NHS-needs-13-000-extra-beds-major-shortage-putting-lives-risk.html

I don't suppose the NHS can staff an extra 13,000 beds anyway.

We will be back to headlines about lack of ambulances, overrun A&E departments and being told not to call 999. Of course its probably all happening as I type, it just doesnt get as much coverage in the summer months.

Meanwhile the AXa chief announces how much money is to be made in the UK as increasing numbers have to rely on private healthcare.

"The boss of Britain’s biggest insurer, Aviva, has said there are “big opportunities” in expanding private health cover in the UK as the strain on the NHS grows and waiting lists for treatments hit record highs."

Record 7.6 million people in England waiting for NHS treatment

Two in five patients waiting more than 18 weeks and key cancer care targets being missed as junior doctors prepare to strike

For crying out loud, what planet is Sunak on? He doesn't appear to be in much pain to me 😬

BIossomtoes · 16/08/2023 19:45

It’s almost as if they’re straining every sinew to destroy the country before they go. Although it’s probably because they’ve let things get so bad they have no idea where to start making it better.

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/08/2023 19:58

I think it’s more because they are so out of touch that they don’t know where to start.

Our ED wait time was 8 hrs last night. I know because I checked before deciding not to bother. Of course if the waiting list for an outpatients appointment was the same length as it was in 2010, it wouldn’t have got to the stage where I might need an ED appointment.

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/08/2023 19:59

And there were a lot of ambulances outside as I left this afternoon. I suspect this has a lot to do with the current covid wave.

Notonthestairs · 16/08/2023 20:27

Of course access to good health services has a direct impact on the economy - healthy population means more able to work & increased productivity.

And Sunak claims he's the one feeling the pain 🙄

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/08/2023 23:12

I’ll compress his sciatic neve root for him. That might focus his mind.

BIossomtoes · 16/08/2023 23:18

Please. I’ll hold him for you.

Is he going to start paying the same proportion of his income in tax as you and I do?

Well at least it did eventually illuminate how outside the mainstream one posters views were
I wish MNHQ would do more about the islamophobia though. I really hate it.

What baffles me is why racists, or islamophobes get so upset if it is pointed out what they are? Why aren't they proud of their beliefs?

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2023 08:48

They've just sunk lower Shock

Gillian Keegan on GMB was challenged brilliantly this morning.

Firstly about funding but then by Adil Ray about Anderson's comments about "fucking off back to France"

She wouldn't say what he said was wrong. He brilliantly asked how schools would deal with pupils making these comments.

She blustered about how they all have their own bullying policies.

When pushed her actual answer needed up basically that she'd expect schools to punish pupils for swearing but adults can choose their own language.

She either didn't get or deliberately ignored that it wasn't the swearing that was the issue. They really are the lowest of the low Angry

BIossomtoes · 17/08/2023 08:58

She blustered about how they all have their own bullying policies.

So she essentially admitted he’s a bully. Lovely own goal.

I've stuck my head in sand and avoided all the media crap since then, it's made it less stressful.

DuncinToffee · 17/08/2023 10:03

DD got hers today too but is staying at college for anther year to do a foundaton course as she doesn't know what she wants to study yet.
