Whatever happened to - Timotei shampoo??

One of the biggest brands of my 80s childhood and 90s early adult hood. The woman with the long golden hair frolicking by a waterfall, and a horse (?) Huge selling brand, it was everywhere and everyone used it.

Then at some point it completely disappeared. What happened? Was it replaced by "Because I'm worth it" and the Herbal Essences woman?

@Hoppinggreen I remember that! It was my mums and I used it as well. I think I can just remember the smell and it was quite thick consistency?

1FootInTheRave · 13/08/2023 18:14

Does anyone remember the soaps from The Body Shop that were shaped like animals?

liverdoc · 13/08/2023 18:21

I think that was Revlon again - it was called "Custom Eyes" and you could choose up to 3 colours for your palette. I still use a brown one called "Timberwolf"!

Oh i can't remember the brand but I had these magnetic eye shadow singles that you kind of snapped into a magnetic case and rearranged. It was so sophisticated and everyone at my school coveted it. Anyone?

Sorry @SlightlyJaded . I've just tried to quote you above and buggered it up!

MyrtleSmurf · 13/08/2023 18:27

I use Vosene on my kids now, get it in Savers. Still smells exactly how it used to, and my children haven't had nits since I started using it!

The Body Shop brought back their Satsuma range which also still smells exactly the same. I used to love the animal soaps they did, and the bath pearls! Didn't like how slippy the oil made the bath but I used to LOVE squishing them between my fingers.
Someone mentioned the squashy soap and I had completely forgotten that until now!

I could really do with Avon bringing back their black cherry and nutmeg things, that was my favourite scent ever.

Does it still smell like the old Flex? The reviews on Amazon say it's different to the 80s one.

There are various versions now, but the bigger yellow one still has that same smell.

We didn't use conditioner when I was a kid. And our hair was in such great condition. Always shiny and soft. None of this shampoo/conditioner bought from the hair salon. It was Flex, V05, Colgate (either the egg one or the apple), or Body on Tap which was a beer one. If my mum was being really fancy she's use styling mousse, and a dash of Elnett for a wedding or something equally extravagant.

But then when I look back at old school photos, our hair was soft and shiny, but we all either had a Purdy style, or short, back and sides. None of us seemed to have long hair.

That takes me back! I remember begging my mum to get it because I completely fell for the marketing I thought it would transform my frizzy mane into smooth flowing locks

Me too!
I didn’t realise I even had curly hair.
So I washed it and dried the life out of it with Timotei shampoo. Resulting in lovely nickname’s like ‘bog brush’
I blame the beautiful hair flicking lady for a lot!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/08/2023 19:09

I found one of my school photos , most of the girls had long hair .
There was loads of crimping going on- if you didn't have a crimping iron (I didn't) then it was tieing your hair into loads of tiny plaits when wet then sleeping in that . Undo the bands and unravel then with your fingers/wide tooth comb.
No Brushing unless you were after a fuzzy mess !
I do miss the 80s

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 13/08/2023 19:16

Conditioner wasn’t a thing in the 60s (well that my mum believed in) but then she bought a “creme rinse” from Avon. Was pink and you only used a little bit. Suddenly the agony of shampoo night vanished. I had a few months of bliss. She never bought it again.
Also Avon skin so soft bath oil, until I tipped a good slug in rendering the bath a death trap. Smelled so good.

Thisisnotreallymyname · 13/08/2023 19:18

I still remember the fabulous smell of Bristows Lanolin shampoo.
Thats gone too.

Bluetrews25 · 13/08/2023 19:19

Yes I had
Woodleigh Green Apple shampoo - it smelt so, so strong
Limara body spray
lots of fruity Body Shop soaps - loved them

Also recall about 50 different varieties of Wash & Go - vanished to the same place along with all 50 varieties of Sunny Delight, I think.

As a student back then, you'd get asphyxiated by Anais Anais or Poison fumes on a night out, and if you were lucky the lads would smell of Drakkar Noir. (Swoon)

MansfieldLark · 12/08/2023 12:12

Did anyone put Toners (the ones in the sachets) on their hair all the time. I loved the rich mahogany

Yes - Hint of a Tint, they were called. I used Mahogany too, beautiful.

katseyes7 · 13/08/2023 19:21

I used Flex shampoo and conditioner for years, it smelled amazing! I always got compliments that my hair smelled lovely.
Best l ever used was the one someone else has mentioned, the Vidal Sasson three step. My hair was incredible when l was using that, l wish you could still get it!

Hotflushesinthesunfun · 13/08/2023 19:22

Yes to apple shampoo, it would have been cheap if we had it. No conditioner allowed until I bought my own, and those V05 tubes of hot oil. Also a brown stinking shampoo that stripped your hair after you had used too many products?
Anais Anais for day and Poison for clubbing

Thisisnotreallymyname · 13/08/2023 19:24

If anyone has any idea where I could buy Tigi Bedhead “ Superstar “, styling lotion ( the one in the purple hour glass shaped bottle ) I would love to know.
suddenly became unavailable about a year ago. Can’t find anything as good anywhere.

katseyes7 · 13/08/2023 19:24

70isaLimitNotaTarget
I used to do this in the 70s when l was a teenager.
My hair was past shoulder length, l used to put in lots of skinny plaits, and sleep in them. Next day - crimped hair, but you couldn't brush it or it just went crazily bushy!

Very Stevie Nicks Boho back then!

Misty84 · 13/08/2023 19:25

My mum also didn’t believe in conditioner- told me it would make my hair “limp and lank”. As a result I had horribly dry hair for many years, and then what a revelation it was to finally try it and have smooth ends!!!!!

We all had short hair with huge side parted (shiny) fringes 😂 And we would get told off in class for having hair in our face from the floppy fringe.

My dd does that now with her hair. A few Dutch braids when it's wet, goes to sleep and it's all wavy in the morning, and still wet!

V05 also used to do a colour mousse. That stuff was great, but also disappeared along with all the Alberto Balsam. I'm not in UK so I know you can still get it, as I saw some in the UK shop we have. I doubt it's like the old ones we knew as it's was all tea tree and argan oil etc.

Justontherightsideofnormal · 13/08/2023 19:40

I was brought up on vosene shampoo and no conditioner 😬

Icantfindmykeys · 13/08/2023 19:48

speaking as a hairdresser it was the worst shampoo - so good riddance 😂

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/08/2023 20:00

Thisisnotreallymyname · 13/08/2023 19:21

Yes - Hint of a Tint, they were called. I used Mahogany too, beautiful.

I remember then-
You had "Toners" and "Shaders" which were for blone or brunette hair (often given away as a free gift on the front of Jackie )

Inecto Hint of a Tint had a stripey pattern sachet

There was Harmony in the triangular box (like a Toblerone box but shorter)

And IIRC "Glints" which was a box with a curved top and everyone seemed to use Black Cherry .

I used Henera Henna shampoo back in the day and the conditioner which was so thick and luxurious . Dabbled in henna powder too which was a messy, time consuming process and gave me the wildest colour hair Grin

Bookloverjay · 13/08/2023 20:11

Anyone remember
Insignia?
Remember it's got everything from shampoo to shower gel
For that one all over smell😂

I miss zest soap

enchantedsquirrelwood · 13/08/2023 20:14

An ex-boyfriend of mine worked on Organics during his uni placement year!

I remember the yellow nit prevention shampoo too. I think it has been banned now. Not surprised - it was pretty awful stuff, though it worked and I had lovely hair and no nits until I was an adult and caught them from my 5 year old son. But I was terrified of it going in my eyes. I can't remember the name but I think it might have started with a T as well.

Timotei was the first product that I noticed being ripped off - ie the likes of Boots did their own version in similar colours and put it next door to the actual Timotei.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 13/08/2023 20:17

The nit prevention shampoo was Suleo, it didn't start with a T.

Haggisfish3 · 13/08/2023 20:21

Linco beer! Horse chestnut shampoo! I had totally forgotten about these things but oh I loved them so!!
