Whatever happened to - Timotei shampoo??

One of the biggest brands of my 80s childhood and 90s early adult hood. The woman with the long golden hair frolicking by a waterfall, and a horse (?) Huge selling brand, it was everywhere and everyone used it.

Then at some point it completely disappeared. What happened? Was it replaced by "Because I'm worth it" and the Herbal Essences woman?

What about Woodley Green apple shampoo. Loved that smell.

I’d completely forgotten about that shampoo but now I can vividly remember the gorgeous smell and the song on the advert!!

LadyVictoriaSponge · 12/08/2023 15:38

Anyone remember mum deodorant? (think it might have been spelt muum) the adverts were cartoons of naked people!

Height of sophistication in my late teens was Cosmetics to Go mail order, which went bankrupt and re-emerged as Lush. Or Yves Rocher which did similar and was posh by dint of the French name.

And Body shop dewberry, of course.

Cosmetics to Go were so much better than Lush. I still remember their fresh strawberry and ginger back mask. I loved getting their newspaper every so often, maybe every month?
I also loved Yves Rocher and their various perfumes. I had so many bought through their sale catalogue

I had forgotten about flex bit now I desperately want some! I can just imagine the smell.

UpendedPineapple · 12/08/2023 16:16

Pink one was almond milk timotei!

cantkeepawayforever · 12/08/2023 16:31

Timotei us - iirc - one of the brands owned by Unilever. They also own a variety of other shampoo / personal care brands and probably chose to focus on those in the UK market while using the Timotei brand in some overseas markets.

Timotei sold in relatively small amounts through ‘cheaper’ shops in the UK may be originally manufactured for overseas markets or just sold cheaply here to avoid discounting the price of ‘main’ Unilever UK brands to preserve their perceived ‘value / price point’ but allow Unilever to sell in these discount-type stores.

On a Sunday night before school on a Monday I would use Timotei to shampoo then Flex conditioner, it was bright yellow and like slapping custard on your hair. I can still remember the smell of it.

Same here.

I bought some Flex conditioner recently for the memory, it was wonderful!

GenieGenealogy · 12/08/2023 16:38

Agree - I bought Pears soap bars somewhere like Home Bargains, another Unilever brand. I tweeted them to ask why they felt it necessary to put the soap in a plastic bag, in the box. Nothing to do with us they said, made under licence in India and imported by Home Bargains on the cheap.

Flex is definitely still around.

Try the South African shops as it's still readily available here. They have expanded the range a bit since since back in the day. The illuminating range has to still be the best for making your hair shine. And it's cheap as chips too.

We still get Organics as well. In the big 1l bottle (it might be 750ml now .. shrinkflation) with the pump.

Does it still smell like the old Flex? The reviews on Amazon say it's different to the 80s one.

Oh yes. VO5 I think? I definitely used them when I had my Kylie-perm in about 1989.

I used to like Pantene but that disappeared as well. I do remember Timotei. My grandma used to get the beer shampoo and it came in a little barrel, I assume just for one wash.

TheOwlChronicles · 12/08/2023 20:40

I launched a campaign to try and bring the below back! I failed, but I did have them delving into their archives and sharing the campaign so that's something!

Pantene is still around, iirc. It’s a Proctor and Gamble brand.

Anyone remember Linco Beer shampoo?

Yes. You could get the shampoo and conditioner in a sachet to take to the pool/holiday

Caswallonthefox · 12/08/2023 21:03

I worked in a plastics factory that made the vo5 lids, 25 years ago. They were a batch to create.
My sister used timotei. Can't remember what I used.
I do remember my mum bringing home some medicated shampoo when we had head lice (she was a vet nurse).

Caswallonthefox · 12/08/2023 21:04

Batch? I meant bitch.

Oh thank you for remembering this. Reading through this thread, hoping someone would mention it and racking my brains trying to remember it's name. And then I read your post. Woodley Green was the shampoo of my teens, I can still smell it now.

MansfieldLark · 12/08/2023 21:48

Boots used to do a horse chestnut shampoo in the 90's it smelt devine and was lovely on dark hair. I miss it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/08/2023 21:57

I used to buy a shampoo called Topaz that had a pump bottle and got often got a free mini bottle of conditioner with it ,

In the 90s there was a gorgeous shampoo in a white bottle with green/purple wtiting that smelled tropical -fruit rather than coconut

And BodyShop Green shampoo smelled like freshcut grass with Hair Salad conditioner .

I remember the using the VO5 Hot Oil. Their advert started off: "Don't be so mean to your hair!"

BeverleyMacker · 12/08/2023 22:15

The vo5 hot oil tubes are available in superdrug. My sister in law got some at Christmas.
