The really awful thing is that I’m not remotely surprised. I’ve reached the point whereby I think they’re capable of anything - apart from behaving with decency and integrity.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 11/08/2023 19:53

The only reason those people were removed today was because the media got hold of the story.

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/08/2023 20:38

It’s not surprising because they don’t see asylum seekers as human.

What was it we said the other day. However low they go there’s always a way they find to go lower.I’d bet any amount of money they the time since Wednesday evening and the story breaking has been filled with an almighty row between UKHSA and the home office. With UKHSA saying the people on board need to be removed and the HO refusing.

Which would be funny because the UKHSA is the not entirely independent body they created when they destroyed PHE. It may have a little more backbone than people have it credit for.

They stole my line ShockGrin

But it's the biggest own goal they've had up til now Grin

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/08/2023 21:50

Which is saying something. There have been a lot of own goals.

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/08/2023 21:58

Wasn’t there a crime week which backfired in a similar way?

Blossomtoes · 11/08/2023 22:04

From The Telegraph

“Small boats week has turned into Carry On Up the Channel week,” said one senior Conservative. Another MP said it was an “embarrassment” and smacked of “incompetence”.

The whole idea of issue of the week is ridiculous. Every day should be 'govern as well as we can for the benefit of everyone in the UK'. No gimmicks needed, just adulting and hard work. This lot wouldn't know where to start.

Notonthestairs · 11/08/2023 22:14

"Every day should be 'govern as well as we can for the benefit of everyone in the UK'. No gimmicks needed, just adulting and hard work. "

Yes please.
When can I vote on this? 😁

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/08/2023 22:30

Right now they are all hoping they are going to be the one down for the weekend media rounds. They’re going to have to go big to distract from this clusterfuck.

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/08/2023 22:31

They are NOT going to be the one.

itsgettingweird · 11/08/2023 22:56

Maybe they should have a "fuck up week".

It may end up being a week they actually do something useful 🤔

newnamethanks · 11/08/2023 23:02

Every Week a FuckUp Week. For the foreseeable future.

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/08/2023 23:11

According to Twitter it works out at about £10million per asylum seeker per night.

Absolute bargain and no way that it would have been cheaper to just put them in a hotel to begin with. FFS.

Blossomtoes · 12/08/2023 07:58

Might as well have sent them to The Ritz and Claridges on full board.

Notonthestairs · 12/08/2023 10:12

The problem for the UK is that every time the Conservatives fail half the Cabinet try to pull the party further right rather than fix what was wrong with the original policy.

They won't suddenly announce more case workers, more senior supervisors, better pay to retain experienced staff and improving the actual systems assessing claims.

Instead there will be more Op Eds in the Telegraph/Sun claiming ECHR threatens the UK.

Throw in a few references to 100 000 million coming to Kent beaches.

Repeat for 12-18 months to an angry frustrated population and hope to whip up Brexit 2.0

I'd like to think we are too savvy to be led down that path again by the same bloody liars but who knows.

Leaves Labour, Lib Dems SNP etc both trying to campaign on their new manifesto AND potentially having to defend the ECHR - which is a huge waste of time because leaving threatens much more than it can ever solve.

I want to hear about is what they can offer education, housing, transport, the NHS and the economy - and I'm worried this policies will get drowned out by a largely Conservative media.

Blossomtoes · 12/08/2023 10:25

I’m not remotely bothered by their empty threats to leave the ECHR. They know perfectly well that as soon as they lose it will be rejoined, the rest of Europe knows that too. It’s one of their madnesses that’s easily reversible if they’re deluded enough to do it.

Notonthestairs · 12/08/2023 10:35

You are probably right.
But despite the polling I remain concerned that they'll invent another enemy and mislead the nation again.

I'm just at the stage of really wanting change but dreading the campaigning to come. It's not just the negative messaging but the bloody inertia that comes with it as people wait to find out what direction we are going in. Wasting another year of our lives.

I know. The thing that comforts me is that the desperation is palpable. Like The Telegraph campaign on abolishing IHT when only 7% of estates pay it. And the 180 degree turn on the environment. It’s like they’ll say anything if they think there’s a vote in it. The run up to the GE is going to be brutal but I can imagine them becoming absolute parodies of themselves and that won’t help them in the final analysis.

L1ttledrummergirl · 12/08/2023 10:44

I've given up on this government. Not only did they reach the depths of degradation, immorality and honour. They set about plumbing them.

I don't have the energy to argue any more, every day they get worse. They won't govern, can't govern, are not up to the job, but won't step away. They lack self awareness and refuse to listen, so nothing will change.

I'm saving my energy, resting, regrouping and when they finally get their sorry selves to do the right thing by the country, then I will be ready to join the fight.

Notonthestairs · 12/08/2023 10:47

"I can imagine them becoming absolute parodies of themselves and that won’t help them in the final analysis."

Ha! Yes that looks spot on.

I don't want to wish the next year away. I just want them to bugger off and let the country work on the issues without the distraction of their nonsense.

Blossomtoes · 12/08/2023 10:50

I know. I’m so weary of it all. I haven’t got many years left and they’re wasting my precious time.

Absolutely this.

We aren't dealing with anything. Nothing is getting solved.

It's all about political popularity and what's said is about what people they want to like the message and what people they think they can persuade to believe the message.

And they've no reason to believe it didn't work - because they succeeded at Brexit.

I just hope considering the numbers in polls who say they wouldn't vote leave this time if there was another referendum that people are once bitten ......
