The government tells an asylum seeker with latent tuberculosis (TB) that they're moving on the barge anyway - sparking fears of a "public health catastrophe"

Might be the least surprising news of the week.

Jesus wept. Just when you thought they couldn’t sink any lower.

I find it best to assume they will sink lower, but refuse to guess how as it is too depressing.

Got to sure up the UKIP/BNP vote.

RafaistheKingofClay · 10/08/2023 21:54

I worry about how much lower there is to go.

Blossomtoes · 10/08/2023 21:57

Me too.

Might be the least surprising news of the week.

I read something (bbc news I think) the other day about there being some 4-6 people rooms they weren't allowed to view.

I now wonder if these will become rooms for sick people to isolate them all together and keep them separate. Avoid the public health crisis of spreading whilst putting them on the barge anyway?

Notonthestairs · 10/08/2023 22:20

Well it's not like medical staff or PHE have anything else to do.

Of course they will claim close supervision etc but I can't imagine that moving somebody with latent TB is ever a good idea.

Wonder what the ventilation is like onboard.

itsgettingweird · 10/08/2023 22:29

It's probably because latent tb is only picked up via testing and isn't infectious?

I'm guessing they'll test them regularly?

I suppose because any of us could have it and not know they'll defend it that way?

It is an increased risk though because they know they have it and the disease could become active and symptomatic. I doubt they can stop the spread happening after this fact?

On Newsnight they were talking about building detention estates, or concentration camps as the Care4Calais person called them

Watching an amazing discussion on good morning Britain right now. It's highlighting everything we've been saying for the past few months and weeks.

It's Ed Vaizey and Grace

Even the Tory minister is saying what we've been saying.

Comments such as

  • we can't solve the issue of backlogs of an underfunded nhs by cutting funding
-The barge is a distraction
  • some people are economic migrants but we can say either all for everyone
  • people are risking their lives on boats - what sort of desperation are they escaping for that to be a better option
  • lots of migrants on the barge are happy with it. What does it say if this is a better option for them. It shows the horrors they are escaping
  • the language of the Tory's has got worse
  • it's easy and they are using the boats as "look over here" to distract from their failures

It was honestly like listening to our thread being read out on Tv Grin

It made wonder how those who argue against this align themselves with the Tory party in general because apart from a few very right wing of the party there are many Tory ministers etc who are saying what we are saying - apparently because we are all rampant lefties WinkConfused

Heartening to hear Martha Kearney challenge the treasury bod on Today this morning, she really pushed him on the economy. Also no defence of the barge this morning.

I cannot wait until they are out of power. It's ridiculous to a) spend the money we apparently haven't got on this and b) this is likely unlawful.

The hard right of the Conservatives are still, years after Brexit, using the country for the fantasies.

My feeling that they will be destroyed at the next election because of this, but this kind of performance is going to go on until they are in opposition and then they will fight about who will be the nastiest leader. You see it already.

The actual strategy is borrowed from the 2013 Tony Abbott victory in Australia on immigration and I think Labour are wise to that.

Blossomtoes · 11/08/2023 10:20

Absolutely. My money’s on Badenoch.

Here is a clip of that interview

LISTEN: Chief Secretary to the Treasury refuses to acknowledge the impact of Brexit on the economy because he's "not a commentator".

In three years we've gone from "Get Brexit Done", the single platform on which this gov't came to power, to "let's not dredge up the past". ~AA

"the country voted for this" Hmm

The Home Office's position is that the primary aim of the barge is to reduce hotel costs, but MPs have clearly understood it as a tactic against small boat crossings

Lee Anderson's claim those who refuse should "fuck off back to France" clearly assumes they crossed from there

Most asylum seekers housed on ‘deterrent’ barge are not small boat migrants

Labour says it’s ‘frankly laughable’ to claim barge will reduce small boats when most residents flew to UK

So, now we're getting regular updates on the number of boats detected in the channel and the number of new migrants. Confused

The reporting of daily number of positive covid tests and deaths from covid with no context succeeded in frightening the public . So now they're trying it with migrant numbers.

Notonthestairs · 11/08/2023 12:53

Latest on the barge - Legionella in the water.
Surely they must have tested for that before moving people on it?

Notonthestairs · 11/08/2023 13:01

I'm fully expecting someone to suggest they should be grateful for the chance to get legionnaires.

DuncinToffee · 11/08/2023 13:06

There is a clip doing the rounds of Nicky Campbell radio show where a woman phones in with this gem

"I'm sorry there will be some deaths, but we should not let the boats land... they will then stop coming."

Oh my God, you're right - that's what they are doing! As if migrants are an infectious disease or plague.

mibbelucieachwell · 11/08/2023 13:20

@Piggywaspushed Ohhh. I hadn't made such a literal connection - but I see what you mean. I was thinking more that it's a more general psychological manipulation strategy to keep the issue in people's minds and normalise this as a publicly acknowledged threat.

mibbelucieachwell · 11/08/2023 13:22

@DuncinToffee Wow.

DuncinToffee · 11/08/2023 13:32

Jon Sopel

So how has government’s ‘stop the boats’ week gone?
* barge now being emptied
* 750 new arrivals yesterday; total at 100k
* Many more expected with calm seas
* Border Force vessel breaks down
* £400k monitor drone crashes into sea
* Lee Anderson says policy has failed.

I missed the news about the vessel and drone.

And the RNLI had to rescue people yesterday, don't think that was reported either.

Absolutely abhorent. People like that make me ashamed to be British.
