@itsgettingweird

"As a country we seem to have become more partisan.

You either agree or you don't. People have stopped seeing and discussing nuances and attack each other."

YES. Sadly. Same with the the Scottish independence referendum.

Blossomtoes · 10/08/2023 14:45

I see Zac Goldsmith is now threatening to vote Labour. I bet Starmer’s ecstatic - not!

Notonthestairs · 10/08/2023 14:54

Yes I can't imagine anyone particularly wants Goldsmiths support given his reprehensible mayoral campaign.

Off topic but I'm just reading about the data breach in NI. Very worrying.

Can be found stirring on various boards...

Conservative Central Office stooge?

The irony of course being that many - like me - do think we need to stop the boats. Do think we need to crack down on criminal gangs offering death defying trips across the Atlantic. We just want humane ways of doing it and don't think putting 500 people on a fire trap or swapping 200 for Rwandans in the answer.

It's fascinating how far right types simply cannot get their heads around subtleties like this. So far as they re concerned, objecting to asylum seekers being put into a fire trap equals welcoming all immigrants with open arms. On the Bibby Stockholm thread, they simply cannot comprehend people whose view is that it's absolutely fine for illegal immigrants to be deported, they just want a just and efficient way of doing it that doesn't involve demonising and potentially killing genuine refugees.

I was a bystander on the most interesting exchange between 2 colleagues over this.

One is southern and moved here from Home Counties.

The other is Scottish - lived and was raised in a remote part of Scotland on a farm. Moved here with her DH in her 20's (Forces family - we are a massive forces area).

The lady who was born in Home Counties is a staunch Tory. One day the conversation about Tory's came up (around time of partygate which fuelled it and because we work in education discussions can often occur re politics).

She was so certain in her views about how the Scottish colleague should feel about NS and Scottish independence. She couldn't even imagine that the Scottish colleague may have her own actual experiences and opinion on the subject. She just kept telling her she was wrong. It was painful!!!!

Tbf. He said if Labour actually started showing some direction and policy he'd not rule it out!

See also the paedophilia thread, where if you're not gagging for paedophiles to be tortured and killed by other prison inmates, you're condoning paedos.

Yep. The response to anyone suggesting a nuance is "lefty. Labour supporter. We know you want open borders" and all manner of crap along those lines.

I often wonder if it's genuine patriotism to their chosen path of a reading comprehension problem they are trying unsuccessfully to cover up! ----

I daren’t look at that.

BashStreetKid · 10/08/2023 15:20

I once nearly had a meeting with Zac Goldsmith when he decided he was interested in local SEN issues, mainly I suspect because he thought he saw an opportunity to slag off the local lib dem council. He cancelled it at a late stage, said he would rearrange it, never did, so clearly his deeply held concerns for disabled children, um, weren't so deeply held. Or he worked out that Ed Davey, who was also involved as he is in the neighbouring constituency where SEN is run by the same useless privatised company, would show him up - as, in fact, he did.

I don't somehow think the Labour Party is gagging to convince him to join them.

That thread was horrendous.

IClaudine · 10/08/2023 15:30

There is also a pensioner bashing one running that was so obviously started by a bot/troll.

Anxioys · 10/08/2023 16:03

The basic issue that no one knows who the Tory Party is for anymore, and these posters a good example of that.

DuncinToffee · 10/08/2023 16:05

It's playing bingo

Welcome refugees and you want open borders, agree with something Labour says and you are a staunch lefty, you agree with a Tory and they are obviously a remainer etc etc Grin

I've been wondering for a while if the Tory's will bring out anti semetism during their age campaign.

There's no doubt both sides are going to play as dirty as needs be.

It'll be interesting to see if the hard right will back them in this (there's no doubt it was an issue previously) or recognise it's a bit pot kettle black considering the xenophobia and racism used in all the far right propaganda nowadays.

Especially after a Jewish woman compared what Braverman is doing with what the Nazis did.

It's all such a mess.

In the meantime the country is not getting any better and is - in fact - getting worse.

Blossomtoes · 10/08/2023 17:10

I don’t think they’ll try to play the anti Semitism card this time, as you say there are too many pot/kettle examples to draw on. We’re already getting some clues - there’s a lot of trying to paint Labour as the party of even higher taxes, migration will be huge and they’ll be crowing about miniscule falls in inflation - which will be rich because they claimed inflation wasn’t their fault. Where Labour will score effortlessly is the NHS, the contrast in waiting times in 2010 and now is mind blowing.

IClaudine · 10/08/2023 17:33

Interesting question @itsgettingweird , there was a reference to Labour supporters being anti-Semetic on that other thread.

itsgettingweird · 10/08/2023 17:34

I think Labour will also score effortlessly in education.

It was so much better under them. And they weren't in charge of the fuck up which are ehcps. Which were good in the Rory and useless in underfunded practice.

Blossomtoes · 10/08/2023 17:38

Yes, education is strong. There seems to be a lot less about knowing what a woman is now.

I am not sure Labour even need to go that much into policy. For many people repeats of Boris lying, partying, Truss creating a cost of living crisis, Sunak doing nothing will be enough to motivate them to vote against the Tories.

The Iraq war is used against Tony Blair at every opportunity, how long will the lies and parties stick to the Tories?

They are for themselves.

Seriously though they’ve fucked off the farmers, the fishermen, anyone owning a business, public sector workers in a huge variety of sectors, the red wall, the blue wall, anyone who cares about the environment, the poor, the squeezed middle, anyone with a gas bill or mortgage…etc, etc

I reckon people smuggling gangs are probably about the only people who they haven’t pissed off.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 10/08/2023 18:47

Surely Labour just need to show that they're sane and have a modicum of humanity.
