The main barrier to chess clubs, which definitely do exist, is 30 minute lunchtimes. I used to go to bridge club in secondary school! But lunch was about 5 hours long.

I would have thought that if you were going to start fiddling with education as a policy then staff retention might have been a more important place to start rather than chess clubs.

If only more school staff were allowed to run chess clubs then they would enjoy their work so much more and so the retention problems would be resolved.

As long as those chess lessons don't lead to university aspirations

Perhaps they want staff to include a strong message about who is a King and who is a Pawn and that very few Pawns get to cross the board to be crowned a Queen.

I thought it was only girls who weren't allowed to go to uni?

L1ttledrummergirl · 02/08/2023 20:34

Maybe there will be funding for all these new chess teachers. Maybe...

Girls and poor people I think.

Notonthestairs · 02/08/2023 21:39

DS plays chess at lunchtime but he has to have his lunch at break time to fit it in.

Baffled at the idea that 100 chess sets will inspire a nation but maybe I'm missing something.

Meanwhile the Fire Brigade Union has written to Braverman about safety concerns on the Bibby Stockholm. As they rightly point out fires don't discriminate and neither should safety regulations.

You are probably correct. Perhaps also immigrants?

1 chess set in a park for every 63 thousand people. The queues will be worse than the loos at Glastonbury.

DuncinToffee · 03/08/2023 08:49

Bank of England expected to raise interest rates to new 15-year high to fight inflation, 14th time in a row.

Myabe those chess queues can keep people warm, huddle up.

This bloke is now playing PM

Jayne Secker; You spoke at a pro-Trump think tank... saying the US/UK can't afford to indulge in woke psychodrama.. what do you make of Trump's drama?

Oliver Dowden: I can't comment on that

JS: Are you a Trump supporter?

OD: I don't back one side or the other.

UK ministers are set to announce a further delay to post-Brexit border controls on animal and plant products coming from the EU, amid fears that extra bureaucracy on imported goods will fuel inflation.

I guess they couldn't implement it before an election - so kicking the can down the road to blame Labour for it later.

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2023 09:10

Dowden can't risk funding - or post election job offers - drying up from the US.

"Very normal: A government source accused Fire Brigades Union of a "betrayal of our country and the British people" for raising fire safety concerns. Ht @lomelindi12"

FFS.

Its a 50 year old ship and will have double the amount of occupancy it was intended for. Of course fire regulations should apply.

Blossomtoes · 03/08/2023 09:18

Wtf? Do they really want another Grenfell? Anyone remember when they were the party of law and order? Oh, and fiscal responsibility?

DuncinToffee · 03/08/2023 09:21

The Fire Brigade Union donates to the Labour Party, that's why

Teenagers everywhere can get casual work manning the queues.

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/08/2023 09:36

I wondered whether that would be the line they’d take last night. I was hoping I’d be wrong. Not sure why I was expecting even the tiniest shred of human decency from them.

Do they really want us to discuss who donates to the Tory party?

The special chess hotline. I hear there are some bids in already.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 03/08/2023 10:01

'Betrayal of our country and the British people' What the actual fuck?

IClaudine · 03/08/2023 10:13

Hey everyone! Haven't been on the thread much as I am busy with my new Deliveroo job.

They really have nothing to offer except badly thought out "policies" which will never get off the ground and rampant xenophobia.
