As prisons buckle under record overcrowding, and victims of serious sexual and violent offences wait 5 years for a trial, and chronic shortages of courts, judges and barristers contribute to record backlogs, it is good to see the government acting by…

…locking up shoplifters.

Holiday not getting in the way of electioneering. Locking up repeat shoplifters is tomorrows target. In what prisons? Are we going to be putting them in marquees too?

It costs around £40K a year to keep someone in prison. If we have that much money available to spend on shoplifters, how about diverting some of it towards education? Or care?

Piggywaspushed · 01/08/2023 07:26

I do believe shoplifting is the only crime where the perpetrators are majority female. Soft target.

Kiwano · 01/08/2023 07:26

DuncinToffee · 31/07/2023 21:31

The PM's spokeswoman would not reveal the destination for security reasons

This is rather unusual, even Johnson revealed all his holidays, and I remember holiday snaps from the Camerons

What a load of nonsense. Clearly he's going somewhere that costs squillions and is keeping it quiet because Central Office has worked out that it's a bit embarrassing in the middle of a cost of living crisis.

pointythings · 01/08/2023 08:17

It's a bit rich creating a cost of living crisis through your economic incompetence and then locking up the desperate people who have turned to shoplifting because of your own policy choices.

Saucery · 01/08/2023 08:19

There’s a spate of antisocial behaviour by (mainly male) teenagers in my area. Every few years there’s a wave of low level (but still intimidating) damage to shops, property and targeting of vulnerable people in local parks. E-Scooters and an unlicensed off road motorbike added to the mix this year. It takes relatively little effort to nip that in the bud but this year it seems to be carrying on and on.
But yeah, let’s only fund enough police to turn up to Sainsburys and Morrisons to arrest shoplifters. As piggy says, majority female, too, so at least they know what a woman is Hmm

Piggywaspushed · 01/08/2023 08:44

We had a stabbing on our estate yesterday Sad

But, yes, I guess women's prisons aren't as overcrowded?

Notonthestairs · 01/08/2023 09:16

Apparently they are going to build more prison places.

Never mind the court backlogs, lack of barristers & judges. Or that only 5.7% of crimes led to charges (an improvement on 5.4% the previous year).

And let's hope they improve maternity care in prison.

It's nothing to do with the economy. This has been a Tory want for some time, and they've managed to find some suitably wet civil servants to do it.

Boris Johnson's swimming pool plans threatened by newts

Yay! Go newts! Just need some bats in his loft now Grin

newnamethanks · 01/08/2023 15:06

Newts? I blame Ken Livingstone, sneaky blighter.

DuncinToffee · 01/08/2023 16:12

Colin can add newts to his list

Oh, hh, what a shame about the Great Crested Newts. The Guardian recognises they're getting their own back because Johnson was beastly about them. My theory is that they are being public-spirited. No-one needs to see more of Boris belly-flopping about in his swimming trunks.

If he'd included Carol Voderman that would have been most of the Daily Mail hit list.

Notonthestairs · 01/08/2023 16:45

It wasn't just the newts complaining -

The application of the former prime minister also received other, perhaps less serious, comments, with one anonymous contributor giving their address as "123 Brexit Avenue, Sunlit Uplands"

RafaistheKingofClay · 01/08/2023 17:28

I’m sure we can encourage some bats into the area, @Cornettoninja. Although whether they would want to live with Boris is another question.

I think I read somewhere that a few of his neigbours put up EU flags/banners

I definitely really about the EU flags.

By-election in Rutherglen and Hamilton West.

Incumbent former SNP MP Margaret Ferrier has lost her seat following a successful recall petition after she broke Covid rules.

SNP held. Majority of 5166. Big Labour target.

Whilst the SNP will try and point out that they perfectly appropriately first suspended and then expelled Ferrier, it will nonetheless be interesting to see how Labour and the SNP fare. SNP are in more of a mess than they have been for 15 years, Labour are on the march nationally. It would make Labour's path to Westminster more straight forward if they took some Scottish seats like this one.

Errolwasahero · 02/08/2023 07:46

@jgw1 where I am it’s more likely to split the vote and let the wanker back in again 😥 We just don’t know what to do for the best!
