Serious pedestrian accidents have also increased with the rise in ownerships of large cars in urban settings. My little C1 would do far less harm at 20 or 30 than a SUV.

IClaudine · 31/07/2023 14:12

Wales is introducing nationwide 20mph restrictions in September. Oh my lord, the frothing from some people is unbelievable. The policy was in Welsh Labour's manifesto, though and they were voted in. It will be interesting to see what effect it has.

SUVs should be banned in urban areas, unless you are a rural dweller passing through or something. They are hideously dangerous. I mean why the eff do you need bullbars in a town or city?

In order to protect the occupant of the car from stray pedestrians or other unsavoury lifeforms that one find in towns.

It's just another case of money for friends

Jonny Dymond: We don't get a discount on UK produced oil?

David Sheppard(FT energy editor) - "No, b/c our oil industry is run by private companies. Much of the oil, produced in the UK, is exported overseas... as UK refineries generally prefer to import oil from other places"

Are SUV not taxed at an excruciating rate in the UK, they are in Sweden? We almost got one when our last car died. It was the only vehicle in our price range in the dealership at the time, right at the start of covid when everyone was scared to go anywhere. Thankfully another nearby garage rang with a regular car before DH signed on the dotted line. I thought DH was going to cry with relief as he was so worried about the tax he'd have to pay.

Anxioys · 31/07/2023 15:47

Believe the French now tax and have separate licensing for SUV classes. We should the same imo.

This is all just nutty and somewhat desperate. Sunak is now clinging desperately to the drivers' vote because of Uxbridge, whilst closing his eyes to the fact that they only won Uxbridge by the skin of their teeth and it would be way more profitable to the Tories to analyse why they lost so much of the Uxbridge vote and why they lost the other two by-elections so spectacularly badly.

Interesting research into the impact of the Uxbridge Ulez social media bots - big question is who is funding them.

I know. Less than 500 votes. I expected pictures of Starmer pointing and laughing rather than what we got. Deeply unimpressive but he's all there is. I hope to hell he's got hidden depths.

I don’t know, personally I’m sick of politicians trying to bring playground rules into politics.

Starmer’s got a lot to prove but personally I’d be happy if he can be the adult in the room when even when it’s tempting to rub their face in it. Standards in politics have fallen dramatically, it’s refreshing to have someone taking them seriously.

Rishi Sunak's family's business Infosys boasts of its partnership with "two of the top five integrated oil and gas companies, three of the top four oilfield services providers, and five of the top 10 upstream enterprises across the oil and gas landscape.”

Good news for the sanity of all of us is Rishi’s off on holiday for a week. Twitter jury is out on whether this actually is his first holiday in 4 years. Presumably he isn’t counting his trip to Santa Monica last Easter.

A holiday to your second or third house is not a holiday.....

I genuinely couldn’t give a flying fuck if this is his first family holiday for four years. He has had the time (when Truss beat him in the vote for the leadership) and the money to remedy that. Announcing it like he’s somehow sacrificing himself just gets my back up.

To be fair after the plane crash of an interview he gave this morning it is pretty clear he needs a holiday, perhaps he could expedite a longer one by calling a general election.

Notonthestairs · 31/07/2023 21:29

Well he can't be holidaying in Santa Monica - according to the Telegraph he refers to that as 'home'.

DuncinToffee · 31/07/2023 21:31

The PM's spokeswoman would not reveal the destination for security reasons

This is rather unusual, even Johnson revealed all his holidays, and I remember holiday snaps from the Camerons

OP posts:
L1ttledrummergirl · 31/07/2023 22:05

He seriously thinks that being PM makes him head of state. He needs to give his head a wobble.

I thought he'd had a massive holiday this year, he hasn't done any actual work. In my books, flying everywhere to further your family business on taxpayers money, isn't work. He sure hasn't done a thing to build the country and make it better for the people who call it home.

For love of everything, if we aren't having an election for a year, stop electioneering and govern the bloody country, if we are having an election give us a date. This no man's land benefits no-one.

Notonthestairs · 31/07/2023 22:41

I think Johnson had to declare most of his holidays because they were funded by donors. Apart from the one in the tent in the middle of nowhere (which I'm pretty sure he didn't actually stay in).

I expect Sunak can pay for his own holiday

Holiday not getting in the way of electioneering. Locking up repeat shoplifters is tomorrows target. In what prisons? Are we going to be putting them in marquees too?

So it turns out that defunding the police and criminal justice system was not a good idea, who would have thought it

Absolutely this. Agree too
