Did anyone hear the Minister for Nuclear and Networks (who knew that post even existed?) on the Today programme this morning talking about the decision to give more licenses for fossil fuel extraction? It was so blatantly obvious that he had crib sheet with three things on it: No reliance on hostile foreign powers, the Climate Change Committee recognises that fossil fuels will continue to play a major role, and especially "The Government is firmly committed to net zero by 2030" and he just couldn't come up with any logical reason why it wouldn't make more sense to put those resources into prioritising the development of non-fossil fuel resources.

I guess he knows it's safe to cling to the 2030 target knowing the Tories aren't going to have to come good on it.

WTF is going on here? Sunak seems to have become significantly more desperate this week jetting around the country in his jumper making anti green 'vote winning' polices on the hoof. Just get out!!!

Kiwano · 31/07/2023 09:49

The words that come to mind are "straws" and "clutching".

Plus, of course, the Mail and Express like anti-green policies.

Maybe Greg Hands will retweet his thread from 2022

Plenty of myths around on energy today.

As Energy Minister, I would like to take on some of these myths.

1st of 4 - are we dependant on Vladimir Putin for gas?

Oh.

I would laugh but I'm too pissed off.

RafaistheKingofClay · 31/07/2023 10:04

Is it too much to hope that anyone interviewing Sunak today is challenging him on those points. Or is everyone just going to go along with it and let the bullshit stand?

Anxioys · 31/07/2023 10:25

Around where I live 20mph is described as communism. Car culture is crap and I cannot wait to move!

I'll take Khan's lefty charges - the air in London is disgusting and needs to change.

Piggywaspushed · 31/07/2023 10:30

I literally just saw a quote from a right wing Tory calling traffic calming a 'socialist project'... I mean , what??

You can listen to it by following AdamRyan's link, at 8:16am

Sunak's defence of pointlessly flying to Scotland seems to be that other Prime Ministers flew as well.

Now I am not sure that copying the poor behaviour of his predecessors is necessarily a good idea. Is he going to use the same defence next time he breaks the law, lies to parliament or crashes the economy. Well other Prime Ministers did it too....

Sunak touting for the Pollution Party. We want more filth and plenty of it. And we want it now. Defies reason but they voted for Brexit so why not add some more insanity to the mix and see if they buy it. *ers all of them.

Well there's sewage on the beaches so it's the natural next step.

Tons of drivers around here seem to think 20mph zones are optional. They definitely seem to believe that 20mph zones shouldn't run at certain times of the day. They are far too important to obey the law.

The one thing I am pretty sure that Sunak is achieving this week is reinforcing the anyone but Tory vote and increasing their turnout when the time comes. He may also be successfully persuading those whose views align closest with the Greens, Lib Dems or indeed Labour to vote for whoever in their constituency is most likely to beat the Tories.

Whether he is doing enough to secure more Tory voters turn out, I don't know.

The same though is true when the speed limit is 30mph. The advantage if one call it such of a 20mph speed limit is that such anti-social behaviour might still mean they drive below 30mph, rather than closer to 40.

AdamRyan · 31/07/2023 10:38

Oh it's all positioning for the "Labour support Just Stop Oil" campaign that's coming.

Equating Corbyn with terrorists worked well for them in 2019 so they are just trying to set up the same for Starmer.

It's quite interesting to watch really. They tried the Saville smear and Starmer responded with the "Rishi supports child abuse" posters, then they tried "at least Conservatives know what a woman is" and labour said woman = adult human female, no self ID. So now they are trying this instead.

However I think the juxtaposition of the message with all the wildfires/global temperature increase might backfire on them. I hope so anyway.

Saucery · 31/07/2023 10:54

They are optional where I live because they aren’t enforced. Councils need to enforce them or bin them imo. There’s a main street that even has speed cameras currently set at 30. No one does 20, because there’s zero penalty for going faster. At school drop off and pick up times the speed is limited to about 10mph because of all the parents in cars forming a chicane by parking where the fuck they like.

I hate 20 mph zones. I really do. So does my car.

But I absolutely do see the need, especially in residential neighbourhoods and near schools. I will suck them up and smile.

I just wish Cambridge hadn't positioned some of theirs on one of the main routes into town, not passing any schools and not going through residential streets. That just gives the Tories ammo.

Same. They’ve just turned the main road right through our small town into a 20 zone, despite there never have been an accident on it in all the 26 years I’ve lived here. The car absolutely hates it.

DuncinToffee · 31/07/2023 12:05

What do you mean with the car hates it?

It just doesn’t want to do 20. It’s difficult to explain, both of us can manage about 23/24 but the car kind of fights back under that. It’s a hybrid and it could be something to do with the way the automatic gearbox is set. It doesn’t like 20 anyway.

I thought some 20 mph zones were to reduce emmissions rather than accidents. (Although I may have imagined that.)

tobee · 31/07/2023 12:17

It "complains" if you go out of 1st gear? I've got an automatic and it does tick over quite right when you're driving at 20mph especially if downhill gradient.

tobee · 31/07/2023 12:18

That was in reply to @DuncinToffee. But @Blossomtoes has put it well.

tobee · 31/07/2023 12:21

When I went on driver's awareness course (😬) we were definitely told 20 made a huge difference to injuries versus 30 in a rta.

tobee · 31/07/2023 12:22

Car v pedestrian I believe

Thanks for explaining, I have never experienced that, must be annoying.
