Remind me, which party was it that put the 2 child cap on benefits?

JRM is at it too

For once I am lost for words.

As commented in the thread beneath the tweet - Mogg must know it's rubbish but they seem to think their supporters are stupid.

I heard Sunak quoted on the radio earlier, apparently the ULEZ charges are too much for the government to add to hard working families during the cost of living crisis.
I am thinking of writing to this nice Sunak chap to suggest that he joins me in urging the Prime Minister to do his damndest to go after those who set up the bonkers eat out to help out, track and trace and covid PPE frauds that are costing us all, every day, together with urging the Prime Minister to ensure that those on the highest incomes pay at least the same proportion of their income in tax as nurses and teachers.

L1ttledrummergirl · 29/07/2023 21:03

@jgw1, maybe you could add recouping the cost of unusable or no ppe from the likes of baroness Mone, or getting the fuel companies with massive profits to repay the taxpayers at £60 per property, per month for a year.

Maybe you could suggest he campaigns to remove nondom tax breaks politicians and their families (I think expecting them to be resident in the country is a minimal requirement), perhaps these could be extended to other high earners in time.

All good ideas. I am sure these will all go well with Sunak who for today cares about the Cost of Living Crisis.

And the fact that as a lawyer she should have at least some knowledge of cases she can and can't win and save the taxpayers money fighting battles she should know she will lose.

Unless she's a shit a lawyer as she is Home Secretary and MP of Fareham.

The stupid thing is that she will have had real lawyers telling her she couldn't win, but insisted on going ahead anyway - incurring not only thousands of pounds in terms of the government's legal costs, but liability for the claimants' costs as well. But she doesn't care, because she can claim the whole thing is the fault of dreadful left-wing lawyers, not the fact that her department keeps breaking the law.

I see we are going for low traffic neighbourhoods are the enemy today.

Not sure why Sunak would care, don’t suppose it applies to helicopters.

Sunak is going to have a nasty shock if someone tells him who the Chancellor was who provided the money for most LTNs.

DuncinToffee · 30/07/2023 17:23

Some might say being on the Mail on Sunday’s Woke List is far lovelier than being on the Rich List. Badge of honour?

Going to war on LTNs is just such a stupid war to pick. But beautifully illustrates how much the government would rather try and win by igniting a fake culture war than by making people’s lives better and wining that way. Bunch of dickheads.

LTNs have far more benefits than just climate change.

Who needs clean air to breathe

Sunak is becoming increasingly desperate

TBF, anyone who believes their shite is stupid.

itsgettingweird · 30/07/2023 17:58

Yes I saw this.

He's basically saying everyone has a right to use their car. Motorists have a right to drive. Forget climate change etc.

I think they are jumping on the ulez thing. Hoping it's what the country as a whole wants.

Suspect Rishi has never walked of cycled anywhere and has always gone door to door by car. So as long as he doesn’t need to breathe the air he’s not bothered.

We really do need to start ‘greening’ and planting our urban areas now if we are going to be facing 40C+ summers regularly. Looking at recently planted saplings and thinking we should have planted them years ago isn’t going to be much help.

DuncinToffee · 30/07/2023 18:14

He doesn't do public transport either so why would they invest in it and reduce the reliance on cars

OP posts:
RafaistheKingofClay · 30/07/2023 18:25

I am sort of looking forward to him trying to explain how more active transport, safer places for children to be outside and cleaner air is bad.

Poor disadvantaged car drivers.

New: after ordering a review of low-traffic schemes, ministers are also looking at whether they can limit councils’ powers to impose 20mph limits and install bus gates, we’re told. All part of Sunak’s push for the drivers’ vote.

I saw that on Twitter just after I posted. 🤦‍♀️ They really do hate people don’t they.

Most 20mph zones are going to be outside schools aren’t they? Or areas where there are likely to be children. Perhaps someone needs to sit them in front of some road safety videos about the effects of being hit by a car at 20/30/40 mph and the different outcomes.

Or perhaps we should do away with speeding fines and let everyone drive how they like.

pointythings · 30/07/2023 19:02

I hate 20 mph zones. I really do. So does my car.

But I absolutely do see the need, especially in residential neighbourhoods and near schools. I will suck them up and smile.

I just wish Cambridge hadn't positioned some of theirs on one of the main routes into town, not passing any schools and not going through residential streets. That just gives the Tories ammo.

Notonthestairs · 30/07/2023 19:27

It's utter nonsense.
There is no mention of additional funding for a review nationwide. Councils might stop introducing new schemes but I can't see a sudden reversal happening.

And Johnson as Mayor and then as PM was all in favour of them! So a U turn by the Conservatives framed somehow as victory over Labour. Gibberish.

Makes you wonder if Conservative voters knew what they were voting for.

Are the zones related to encouraging cyclists in Cambridge - that was another of Johnson's hobby horses.

jgw1 · 30/07/2023 19:32

I am a bit confused, didn't Sunak announce last week that he wanted to build millions of homes in city centres. But now he is going to make the streets unsafe to walk or cycle on, so presumably all these new homes will now have to come with additional parking spaces.

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/07/2023 19:32

Separated cycle lanes and road vehicles would be a better idea. Guess that’s more expensive though.

https://twitter.com/RCollEM/status/1685711205103542272

More good news for winter 2023/2024 from the Royal College of emergency medicine. Perhaps Rishi could focus on this rather than fighting an election he hasn’t called yet.
