Songs that make you cry/teary?

I've just been listening to Spotify at work in the office and the new song "0800 Heaven" has come on and I'm sat blinking away the tears...not really sure why.

The song "The Christmas Shoes" ALWAYS makes me cry (lyrics).

What songs give you that unintentiomal teary feeling?

Also to perk the thred up a bit, what song if you listen to it, just gives you a really happy feeling?

Just one - Up the Junction by Squeeze. Every time.

Bubblyb00b · 04/07/2023 20:37

it really is just a sad, poignant poetry...

I never thought it would happen
With me and the girl from Clapham
Out on the windy common
That night I ain't forgotten
When she dealt out the rations
With some or other passions
I said "you are a lady"
"Perhaps" she said. "I may be"

We moved in to a basement
With thoughts of our engagement
We stayed in by the telly
Although the room was smelly
We spent our time just kissing
The Railway Arms we're missing
But love had got us hooked up
And all our time it took up

I got a job with Stanley
He said I'd come in handy
And started me on Monday
So I had a bath on Sunday
I worked eleven hours
And bought the girl some flowers
She said she'd seen a doctor
And nothing now could stop her

I worked all through the winter
The weather brass and bitter
I put away a tenner
Each week to make her better
And when the time was ready
We had to sell the telly
Late evenings by the fire
With little kicks inside her

This morning at four fifty
I took her rather nifty
Down to an incubator
Where thirty minutes later
She gave birth to a daughter
Within a year a walker
She looked just like her mother
If there could be another

And now she's two years older
Her mother's with a soldier
She left me when my drinking
Became a proper stinging
The devil came and took me
From bar to street to bookie
No more nights by the telly
No more nights nappies smelling

Alone here in the kitchen
I feel there's something missing
I'd beg for some forgiveness
But begging's not my business
And she won't write a letter
Although I always tell her
And so it's my assumption
I'm really up the junction

“Soon you’ll get better” Taylor Swift about her mum. When she sings simply “soon you’ll get better because you have to” gets me every time.

Same..

My Only Love - Roxy Music
Johnny & Mary - Robert Palmer
Forbidden Colours - David Sylvian

Roxy and Robert Palmer were my DB's faves. He died 10 years ago and those songs just get me.
Forbidden Colours, just because it's sad and David's voice is perfect for it.

catscatscurrantscurrants · 04/07/2023 20:47

Winter - Tori Amos
Underneath the Stars - Kate Rusby
Forever young - Becky Hill

ShowOfHands · 04/07/2023 20:47

White Wine in the Sun.

Even Tim Minchin can't sing it without crying.

butchersbinvag · 04/07/2023 20:50

Piece by piece, by Kelly Clarkson. It's basically describing the same relationship I have with my Dad & my daughter. Every time.

BathTangle · 04/07/2023 20:50

Cry: Dance with my father, Luther Vandross, Wind Beneath my Wings, Bette Midler
Happy: Big Love, Roxette,

Gonna have to put Big Love on now....

IOweMySanityToBasilParsley · 04/07/2023 20:54

If you get there before I do by Collin Raye. Stumbled across it on YouTube once and turns me into a blubbering wreck every single time
Apologies for the cringe video

White Wine In The Sun

That song leaves me a wreck... I can't even tell. People about it without crying!!!

pink1173 · 04/07/2023 21:00

Slipping through my fingers- Abba
Matilda- Harry Styles

Bongosbanjo · 04/07/2023 21:04

Beloved wife by Natalie Merchant and Michaelangelo by Emmylou Harris never fail to make me blurb. St Catherine's day by The Blue Nile really sets me off big time such a beautiful song added to Paul Buchanan signing it with such feeling and care.

Happy song would be Donald whaur's ye troosers by Andy Stewart

Sunnysideup999 · 04/07/2023 21:06

Carry Me Ohio - Sun Kil Moon
Transatlanticism - Death Cab for Cutie

Imnotswallowingthat · 04/07/2023 21:07

Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then
Spin me around till I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure I was loved
If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I'd play a song that would never ever end
How I'd love, love, love to dance with my father again, ooh
When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He'd make me laugh just to comfort me, yeah, yeah
Then finally make me do just what my momma said
Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he would be gone from me
If I could steal one final glance, one final step
One final dance with him
I'd play a song that would never ever end
'Cause I'd love, love, love to dance with my father again
Sometimes I'd listen outside her door
And I'd hear how my mother cried for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me
I know I'm praying for much too much
But could you send back the only man she loved?
I know you don't do it usually
But dear Lord she's dying to dance with my father again

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/07/2023 21:12

Brothers in arms - Dire Straits
Mother - Torie Amos

and happy- let the river run, Carly Simon

mathanxiety · 04/07/2023 21:16

"When She Loved Me" from Toy Story.

InceyWinceySpidy · 04/07/2023 21:19

Not the right thing to say anymore, but "Two Little Boys" makes me sob. "Did you think I would leave you dying..."

Goodbye Norma Jean, because I get thrown back instantly to Elton's version at Diana's funeral and watching my poor Nan's shoulders shaking because she was trying to hold in the tears in front of us grandchildren.

Happy:

I can never remember the title or the singer, but:

"If you'll be my bodyguard, I can be your lo-ong lost pa-al"

Paul Simon is it?

Whenever I hear it in the car I crank it up and me and all DC go nuts singing and flailing limbs about Grin

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/07/2023 21:21

@InceyWinceySpidy thats ‘call me Al’ by Paul Simon

Imnotswallowingthat · 04/07/2023 21:25

@Bubblyb00b good call on Up The Junction. Labelled With Love is another Squeeze song that’s quite emotional.

21ZIGGY · 04/07/2023 21:28

Candle in the wind, princess diana version. Every damn time. Im only 40, was too young to care she died, never had any interest in her or the royals. I dont know what causes it.

Also the maroon 5 one " the drinks bring back all the memories and the memories bring back you"
