Songs that make you cry/teary?

I've just been listening to Spotify at work in the office and the new song "0800 Heaven" has come on and I'm sat blinking away the tears...not really sure why.

The song "The Christmas Shoes" ALWAYS makes me cry (lyrics).

What songs give you that unintentiomal teary feeling?

Also to perk the thred up a bit, what song if you listen to it, just gives you a really happy feeling?

'Chasing Cars' by Snow Patrol. I chose this to play out my sister's funeral. We were/are twins and I lost her unexpectedly in a horrible way. As twins (she died at 61) at various times throughout our lives we'd share a bed, when we weren't with others, so we didn't have to part. I didn't actually hear it at the funeral as I sat outside in the chapel grounds during it, as I couldn't face seeing her in there. I don't really hear the song anywhere as it was released in 2006, but a couple of weeks after the funeral it came on in a bar I was in. I had to dash out and I stood in the market crying until my husband signalled it was safe to come back in. I still love the song though, but I know now it's in my head it'll be affecting me today.

And a song that makes me perk up for all the wrong reasons (everything about this clip is wrong on so many levels) is this one . It's terrible but hilarious and, like I said, just wrong. It featured on 'Last Week Tonight with John Oliver' and it's from an American show called 'Cop Rock'. John Oliver highlights some of the absurbities of the US.

Cop Rock Episode 4 - Song 4 - Baby Merchant

Tears in Heaven ( Eric Clapton) every time.
Puff the magic dragon

I can’t remember the famous singer or the title, but the one by the bloke whose little boy of 4 (IIRC) died after falling out of a building.

At Christmas, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - most especially the line, ‘Through the years we all will be together, if the Fates allow…’

Very poignant if you’ve recently lost someone - or are getting on a bit! I never knew the words until my group piano teacher gave us a copy (with the words) to play.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/07/2023 18:05

That’s the one I meant, @DeadbeatYoda , Tears in Heaven - thank you!

Cry - Cyndi Lauper, True Colours and any others that still remind me of my long gone sibling. Which were mainly tracks he introduced me too, apart from the Cyndi Lauper song, which just resonates.

Happy - absolutely loads but since covid times i do love The WKND Blinding Lights. Got me through lockdown and makes me sing really loud the car.
Anything that I like singing along loudly to really, and maybe playing air guitar, any genre.

Smoothiecarton · 04/07/2023 19:36

the first line of ‘don’t let the sun go down on me’
‘I can’t light no more of your darkness’..
I haven’t really studied the wider meaning of the song or indeed the intended meaning, but I’ve spent the year supporting someone with mental health issues, it’s been really isolating and felt like an enormous lonely responsibility, I really feel those words. I keep trying though.

She Goes On by Crowded House. Such a lovely song that perfectly captures the bittersweet feeling of remembering a lost loved one

Pretty soon you'll be able to remember her
Lying in the garden singing
Right where she'll always be
The door is always open

This is the place that I loved her
And these are the friends that she had
Long may the mountain ring
To the sound of her laughter
And she goes on and on

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
Till we see her once again
In a world without end

We owe it all to Frank Sinatra
The song was playing as she walked into the room
After the long weekend
They were a lifetime together

Appearing in the eyes of children
In the clear blue mountain view
We're coloring in the sky
And painting ladders to heaven
And she goes on and on

Anything played by the Salvation Army at Christmas

Backstreets · 04/07/2023 20:07

Ronan by Taylor Swift. “You were my best four years” makes me want to bawl (it’s about a child not a relationship)

Backstreets · 04/07/2023 20:08

And of course Backstreets by Bruce Springsteen!!

theDudesmummy · 04/07/2023 20:14

Elvis Old Shep
ABBA The day before you came

Wreck on the Highway by Bruce Springsteen
Take Me Home Country Roads by Emmylou Harris
Supermarket Flowers by Ed Sheeran

LivingDeadGirlUK · 04/07/2023 20:20

I'm not really soppy but Falling in Reverse's cover of Last Resort hit me right in the feels. Can't believe how different it is to the original.

ClapperClaws · 04/07/2023 20:21

Monsters - James Blunt
Secret Garden - Bruce Springsteen

Winnerturkeydinner · 04/07/2023 20:22

No song in particular, but the Salvation army brass bands at Christmas alway make me tearful. Many times I've been a sniffling wreck in the supermarket.

When a child is born - Jonny Mathis
