Thank you @Notonthestairs.

Roussette · 09/06/2023 08:27

Thank you! We've got a bit of everything going on haven't we....

(So glad we are not going to have a 'Lady Dorries'. I don't think I could stomach it)

DuncinToffee · 09/06/2023 08:38

Thanks for the new thread BrewCake

I think we will have a Baroness Dorries - just not yet. It seems to me that sending Sharma and Dorries back to the appointments committee for further vetting is a sign that Sunak didn't fancy fighting those by elections until he has "delivered for the people"! He won't be able to hold that up forever.

Although given Dorries blatant lying about Channel 4 I don't think she should be anywhere near the HoL.

"But the House of Commons culture select committee has concluded Dorries’ claims of fakery are not “credible” and suggested she “appears to have taken an opportunity, under the protection of privilege, to traduce the reputation of Channel 4”.

So Sunak returns from rhe US with an ‘Atlantic Declararion’ on economic security & a big endorsement from Biden on the UK’s desire to lead on AI.

But that promised free trade deal? Very much on ice

This is a shame from Labour

Rachel Reeves ditches Labour's plan to invest £28 billion a year on switching to a green economy from day one. Target will now be by the end of their first term.

This was a genuinely radical and transformative policy which now looks significantly watered down. #r4today

Really concerning teacher retention data published today. 40k left the profession last year for reasons other than retirement. Highest on record.

Twice as many heads quit for reasons other than retirement than in 2015/16.

I expected this to be honest. Despite the state of finances Conservatives will definitely cut taxes before the next election so we are going to be in a deeper hole than we already are.

OP posts:

That's not to say I agree with Labour for diluting the policy. I think they've missed a big opportunity. But I think they probably polled views and decided they couldn't sell it to voters - particularly given how opposed parts of the media are to green policies.

Interesting short thread from Torsten Bell on the shift in Labour policy -

"Bit too much excitement on “Labour waters down” £28bn green investment plans. New phrasing is “£28bn/year in the second half of the parliament at the latest”. Anyone thinking a new govt was going to be able to ramp up £28bn/yr from day one hasn’t met the British state"

This sends me into an absolute rage.

Where has the money gone? Don't answer that. Yachts, properties and her children.

Why hasn't her Baronesship (I know that word doesn't exist!) been rescinded?

They are skulking about in the Med whilst her DH is fighting a big court case in Spain for fraud and tax evasion.

Total Tory chaos.

Last year they shouted from rooftops that their new law would stop boat crossings

Today they quietly ditched it because it just increased chaos instead.

The Tories broke the asylum system. Instead of fixing it they just make it worse.

Lovely - a shiny new thread. Thank you @DuncinToffee

I listened to Rachael Reeves this morning with a confused feeling of are they being sensible or will this ultimately end up costing the treasury and the individual more , but in the longer term so it won't be pinned on the Labour Party?

From a climate protection pov and therefore a long term economic pov. you'd THINK that investing in measures to protect us from the effects of global warming and pollution would be an absolute priority, but I don't understand Gilts, international credit ratings and all that stuff.

Are they quietly planning to carry on as before while appearing to delay to be 'fiscally prudent'?

A water expert chappie was saying on the Scottish news today that droughts parts of Scotland used to happen on average at 18 year intervals - they're now predicted to happen every other year.

The largest wildfire ever in Scotland has just happened. Very early in the summer.

And those are just the things I'm aware of.

So many green incentives have been withdrawn too. The tariff for solar panel produced leccie and subsidised electric cars. I was quoted £13K for solar panels and a medium battery. At the current cost of gas and electricity it would take us 8 years just to get break even.

I can understand the rage. It's utterly incomprehensible that the Government would hand over so much ££££ to a brand new company, where were the checks?

I suppose we should be pleased that it leads to better treatment and quicker processing - but once again you've got to ask why they were so determined to break the UN convention and hobble our own systems.

George Osborne tells Northern Research Group (Tory MPs) to stop moaning -

The full quote, thanks to @PA as ever: "There are some Conservatives who blame 'the blob' and the civil servants and the establishment. We've been in office since 2010, we're in charge of our country's destiny, and we should stop blaming others if we don't get things right."

It's amazing that we're here now, thinking of George Osborne as relatively speaking one of the good guys.
