Thank you. Sorry I have zero military or politcal knowledge. Only ever done environmental work (for which war is a castrophe). If it ended tomorrow, I think Ukraine will be cleaning up for a generation.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 06/06/2023 19:09

I have to admit I might do much shorter roundups then heh.

The horror of the blown dam is getting worse.

MagicFox · 06/06/2023 19:12

You know what, I don’t think even when Ukraine wins, all of us are going to disappear. I think maybe the thread will go on post victory. I feel like a lot of us formed camaraderie here with the like-minded individuals and we can continue the chats post war.

Agreed

I keep looking at the palls of smoke in the air and consider the burning fuel and other depots, the mines and the phosphorus bombing and it's overwhelming.

Now the dam, and the oil and perhaps chemicals that have leaked into it.

~warning, distressing~

The Russians are shooting at volunteers who try to rescue people on the Left Bank where the water is rising.

Apparently also the Russians have buried people in bodybags in very shallow graves and now they are being washed away and the bodybags floating down the flood waters.

Disease could be an issue, as well as mines

Apparently desalination of the Black Sea may also be a problem.

Not just Ukraine.

It all goes straight into the Black Sea. Turkey will have a big problem as well.

Thought things were quiet on thread 40 😂

@ReleaseTheDucksOfWar
I think I mentioned W@r Cr!mes and called the Russian Forces a naughty word. I was also reposting a Twitter thread, looking at the way Russian propaganda changed as the scale of the damn disaster unfolded.

@TheABC That twitter thread sounds like an interesting angle. Sorry you got ding-ed.

Still here and following events closely. Thanks for the new thread @MagicFox . Slava Ukraini!

L1ttledrummergirl · 06/06/2023 20:51

Thank you for the new thread. I'm following today's aberration in disbelief. What the fucking hell are the playing at?

I hope Ukraine have factored this into their plans. It's so sad. Sad

They’ve been modelling this since last year so I’m hopeful they had the foresight to factor it in as a possibility. Zelenskyy has said this evening that it will have no impact on the counter offensive. Whilst I suspect that may be true to sheer ecological and long term damage, not to mention short term impact on civilians (and that’s without the reports of the Russians essentially trapping them in danger zones) is absolutely horrific.

MissConductUS · 06/06/2023 21:01

I'm certain they planned for this as a possibility since they knew that the Russians had planted explosives on the dam.

It will still make attacking in that area harder. The river will be harder to cross, and the dam had a road on top of it that would have been very useful to supply forces on the other side. They will adjust and attack elsewhere if needed. There's an old saying that no plan survives contact with the enemy.

Igotjelly · 06/06/2023 21:04

Breaking news on BBC News - US intelligence says it is now accurate to say that the Ukrainian counteroffensive is in its opening phases.

https://twitter.com/Maks_NAFO_FELLA/status/1666151346695819266 unconfirmed reports from the illegally occupied left bank of the river of hundreds of occupants on the roofs of their houses. I did see earlier where the Russians wouldn't let them leave

Pure fucking evil!

New statement from Zelenskyy describing the dam breach as an “environmental bomb of mass destruction”

blueshoes · 06/06/2023 21:22

I won't say it but this latest unspeakable outrage makes me dream of NATO jets.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 06/06/2023 21:24

It makes me dream of NATO on the ground in Ukraine, as well as the jets.

oh god, yes.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/06/2023 21:33

Thanks for the new thread.
I agree with the Ukrainian woman in the video that I think was posted on the other thread saying she would like to see more condemnation of this from environmentalists.

Greenshake · 06/06/2023 21:35

Still here and checking in - thanks everyone 🌷

DrBlackbird · 06/06/2023 22:52

41 threads in and I still maintain that this is the quickest and most comprehensive ’voice’ about what is happening in Ukraine. Many thanks to the informed posters offering their insights and analysis.

prettybird · 06/06/2023 22:54

Can't remember if it was @Mb76 or @MMBaranova who still had family living close to the front line on the left bank of the Dnipro but I hope they're ok Sad

Awful, awful images Shock

I'm hoping that the Ukrainians had wargamed this possibility and therefore factored it in to their counter-offensive plans - but that doesn't reduce the long term damage that is being done to Ukraine and its people Sad

MMBaranova · 06/06/2023 22:54

No contact from the relatives in the occupied area south west of Nova Kakhovka. Not that I am going to be high on their list of priorities if they are being inundated. They are not right next to the river, but if you put your mind to it you could walk there in normal times (or more precisely the R. Konka which is/was a parallel distributary to the Dnipro which is/was further to the north across island wetlands).

The area where they are is nearly flat and hardly higher than yesterday's watercourse. Nearly as in slight undulations, probably due to former sand dunes.

They have been living in the basement / cellar for over a year.

At times like this I donate to the war effort.
