Eat out to help out was absolute madness. How on earth anyone thought it was a good idea in the middle of a deadly pandemic is beyond me

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/05/2023 08:36

Yeah but the economy. Next time we probably want the chancellor to be someone that understands that health vs economy is a false dichotomy. I really do hope economic impact is a focus of the covid inquiry at some point. It’s been far too east for the government to push the furlough and lockdown damaged the economy without much challenge.

DuncinToffee · 30/05/2023 08:55

And like with everything else they like to dismiss, deny, the interest in the WhatsApp messages and notebooks has quadrupled because of it.

They really have the knack for it.

Amazing how often they go for this tactic given it backfires on them every single time.

Allegra Stratton seems to have been the only person smart enough to have seen where this was going and jump ship early.

Totally agree. The public did not need any encouragement to go out and eat, they (we) had endured lockdown and were desperate to get out. What a mad idea it was.

Roussette · 30/05/2023 10:41

Historian and Johnson's biographer Sir Anthony Seldon: "I don't think Boris Johnson's reputation can go much lower. Most members of the public know that he was a liar and not fit for purpose. He didn't have the integrity, skills, or judgment to run this Great country."

An interesting interview

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/may/27/uk-ministers-engaged-in-bitter-fight-to-halt-release-of-covid-secrets

This is more about what Sunak has to hide than Johnson in my opinion. There's enough floating around about Johnson, this is covering up for Sunak.

Why?

Yabu for making me click on that picture of Boris Johnson making his most annoying face.

BREAKING: Covid inquiry delays today's 4pm deadline for handover of Boris Johnson diaries, WhatsApps etc by two days to Thursday

Hmm

tobee · 30/05/2023 10:52

The other WhatsApp messages that were leaked, Oakeshott and Hancock iirc, were absolutely appalling. But they, amazingly, didn't seem to have much affect on the general public.

However, maybe it's because of @Roussette's post about Anthony Seldon?

itsgettingweird · 30/05/2023 11:04

So they are appealing giving the messages etc because they are mostly irrelevant to the inquiry.

It doesn't seem to have crossed their tiny minds that that's the investigators job to determine!

And I think they know it. It's just more gaslighting shit.

Blossomtoes · 30/05/2023 11:08

If they’re irrelevant, what’s the issue? The only possible reason not to hand them over is because they don’t want the content in the public domain. There’s zero accountability.

DuncinToffee · 30/05/2023 11:29

Baroness Hallett has extended time for compliance with her disclosure order until Thursday, and in the meantime requires a signed statement verified by oath to back up the claim that the Cabinet Office does not have copies of Boris Johnson’s WhatsApps or diaries - and a detailed chronology setting out if it had copies and any correspondence with Mr Johnson about it …

Just to explain the above, Cabinet Office is now claiming they don't have Johnson's WhatsApp messages or notebooks which they're seeking

The oath requirement suggests BH is doubting the CO is being entirely truthful...

TokyoSushi · 30/05/2023 12:05

BH seems to be proving to be an excellent appointment, she knows exactly what they're up to, and exactly the type of questions to ask!

Yep. And that's the gaslighting bit.

"We wont hand them over because they're irrelevant. Why do you want them, why should we - there's nothing to see here. You're all making a fuss over nothing and asking us to hand stuff over that's irrelevant"

Its do demoralising that they think the general population are too stupid to see right through them.

Agree. This is the integrity I want to see.

Notonthestairs · 30/05/2023 12:14

Presumably the Mail/Telegraph are finalising articles about BH as we type - "BH's aunts neighbours niece votes Labour", "BH ate my hamster" etc.

Are they really suggesting they didn't take copies of Johnson's diaries before handing them to the police?

Who in the Cabinet Office fancies risking perjury I wonder.

Where is the interview?

CabernetSauvignon · 30/05/2023 12:37

Face it, any picture of Johnson is annoying.

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/05/2023 12:41

I think we’re all going to need a chronology of who had the messages and who is threatening to sue who at this point.
