Result in Hertsmere interesting- Dowden has a 20,000 majority but they've lost control of the council. Hope that's given him pause for thought. Unlikely though.

Redwood suggesting it's about borders and too much Government 🙄 No mention of CoL, the state of the NHS or education or housing.

Wonder if the suggestion of a summer 2024 election was finished off today.

The challenge for the Conservatives is they have more to lose in next year's local elections than this, so unless they go for a GE at the same time, they will have the GE after another car crash local election, and then momentum will be well and truly with Labour.

The leftie lawyer workerati definitely will stop the government delivering if they all vote for someone else. A problem that the Tories don’t seem to have considered.

Do the leftie lawyers have a 70+ majority? I'm not so sure about that.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/05/2023 10:22

They must have a majority given how much they are blamed for screwing up brexit and all the government’s plans.

This is what my very astute DD just typed on WA to me... about the results and tories getting trounced

What people want is...
access to a GP and dentist, reasonable wait times at A&E,
salary increases that allow people to actually live and not just survive
energy bills that aren't the highest in europe
pay for nurses, carers and teacher that stop us hemorrhaging so many from these professions
less red tape from brexit that makes products less available and more expensive
On small boats.... I would like safe routes so that people aren't risking their lives and quicker times processing their applications but I don't want to stop people coming

I just woke up and turned on BBC. So my take from what I've heard so far from the news is that labour did worse than expected and the conservatives have made important gains in some places and haven't done as badly as expected. Keir has a long struggle if he wants to go anywhere near the levers of power.

Emotionalstorm · 05/05/2023 10:44

Also apparently most of the losses for the conservatives today are due to the war in Ukraine.

Yeah it's ok I switched to Sky. Totally different vibe there. Wow it was a bad night.

😂

The Tories have only gone and lost South Kesteven which includes Thatcher’s birthplace, Grantham. What a joyous morning this is.

Fladdermus · 05/05/2023 10:52

Surely there has to be a general election if they're trounced. How can they cling to power when the entire country is screaming for them to fuck off? It's not democratic for a PM whose own party voted against him to cling on like this.

I think you'll find that the worse they do the more they will kick the can down the road.

Absolutely spot on.
The basic scaffolding required for a society to function.

Notonthestairs · 05/05/2023 10:54

The Tory buzzword and threat will be - hung Parliament. That's what they will dangle next.

I'm not sure it's wise mentioning hung parliaments when the public are so angry. Some might take it literally. Viva la revolution!

I listened to this. He sounded desperate and what was appalling was him mentioning 'stopping the boats' three times in about a minute and a half.

I just switched the other way. BBC just showed the cringy bit of Ed Davey’s speech and cut out the whole bit that held the Tories to account with all the issues they’d caused.

Roussette · 05/05/2023 11:13

Just heard we are only three quarters of the way through the results Shock

Roussette · 05/05/2023 11:13

Sorry. A quarter! Three quarters to go!

I think what’s important is that only 1/4 of the results are in, there’s a long way to go and he’s focusing on the people’s priorities of halving inflation etc etc.

Yep. Loads don’t count overnight and didn’t start til this morning.

Notonthestairs · 05/05/2023 11:18

My area started counting this morning. No hint as yet as to when they'll declare.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/05/2023 11:06

I spotted a "should have gone to Specsavers" comment. Perhaps Dom can recommend an eye test😆

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/05/2023 11:22

FFS they’ve got someone else on talking about stopping the boats now.

I’m switching back.
