Worst plot hole in Friends

I was home sick today, and having nothing to do this popped into my head and I can't get it out until I share it! The One With Chandler in a Box, where Monica injures her eye and has to go to the eye doctor. She and Rachel are gushing over how cute the on-call doctor is, only to find out that it is Richard's son. Really?! She honestly had no idea what her ex-boyfriend's son looked like? Granted she hadn't seen him in-person for a while, but Richard really had no photos of his kids in his apartment? That just seems too far fetched to me.

It’s a bigger error that Rachel acts like she never met chandler before when they actually grew up together and spent thanksgiving together several times

FionnulaTheCooler · 18/04/2023 20:16

Rachel's pregnancy lasting over a year, she gets pregnant in the spring just before Monica's wedding, then gives birth the following summer going by the way she is dressed at 9 months pregnant.

AlbertaWildRose · 18/04/2023 20:19

Yes, those too! They just invented whatever details they needed for any particular episode, regardless of whether or not they made sense. The real problem is that true Friends fans can spot the errors!

Ross’s birthday also moves around a lot

Beezknees · 18/04/2023 20:21

Their ages and birthdays were inconsistent. In season 1, Monica says she is 26, which would make Rachel the same age as they were in the same year at school together. But Rachel doesn't turn 30 until season 7.

Phoebe says her birthday is in February but one year when they celebrate it Joey mentions it's the same week as Halloween. Also early on in the series Ross says his birthday is October, but later on in the series he says December. And Rachel tells Gunther her birthday is May, but later on it's mentioned that her star sign is Aquarius.

ToughOldTERF · 18/04/2023 20:23

The fact that they're all earning pretty much minimum wage yet living comfortably in huge apartments in New York City center! Crazy!

Bognog · 18/04/2023 20:25

Joey and Chandler talk about watching Die Hard but then Bruce Willis pops up as Ross's girlfriends Dad

CremeEggThief · 18/04/2023 20:26

Well, part of the answer to that one is Monica was left the tenancy of thr apartment by her grandma and it was still under strict rental control that kept the rent low, as far as I can remember, ToughOldTerf.

Ross and Chandler earn good salaries. It's mentioned often that Chandler helps Joey out with the rent. They explain Monica and Rachel's apartment away as having rent control which is how they afford it.

As for Phoebe, I think she supplemented her income with other jobs, it's implied that she did phone sex work at one time, I reckon she could be a bit of a Del Boy and blag her way through life!

You all need to listen to Friends with Friends podcast where they dissect each episode and point out all the glaring plotholes. They come to the conclusion that the Friends writers 'didn't give a shit about continuity'

KillingMeDeftly · 18/04/2023 20:27

Ben is never seen after season 7 and doesn't seem to ever meet his sister.

PuffinsRocks · 18/04/2023 20:28

Their ages jump all over the place especially towards the end.

That sounds very interesting! I'll have to give it a listen.

Similarly, Chandler talks about Elle MacPhearson in an early series, but doesn't appear to recognise the striking resemblance of Joey's roommate Janine.

Yes! It's like they only wanted Ross to have one child at a time.

People always make that fiat comment but Dh lived in a shared flat near Sloane Square when he was training - you can get lucky with flats if the landlord likes you as reliable tenants and several of them have ok jobs and they all share so I dont think that’s that unreasonable to be fair.

RuppyDa · 18/04/2023 20:37

Watching re-runs on tv recently, last episode of the season Chandler and Monica get engaged - Chandler quite overweight. Next episode (now a new season) day after engagement and Chandler is approx 2 stone lighter. Obviously continuity couldn’t be helped here - the poor guy had problems with addiction. Just weird to see one episode after the other like that !

itsnotyourfence · 18/04/2023 20:37

I love the consistencies in friends 😂

I’m just here to place mark as all mine have been said already.

not a plot hole but I do love when watching is back for the billionth time the Monica/ Chandler chemistry

itsnotyourfence · 18/04/2023 20:38

from the very start, jelly fish episode prime example. They were meant to be

DappledThings · 18/04/2023 20:40

Phoebe is an ardent animal rights activist and vegetarian. But apparently her dream clothing item she always wanted but could never buy for herself and they get for her baby shower is leather trousers.

Chandler and Monica don't know they are having twins but arrive home with them to a fully set up double buggy ready for two newborns.

Emma's not really in it that much either, considering she's the baby of two of the six main characters and the niece of two more. More than Ben is, obviously, but she's only really there as an add on to the pregnancy being a plot device.

Wishimaywishimight · 18/04/2023 20:46

When Joey offers to replace the floor tiles in Monica's bathroom and moves the laundry hamper to show the difference in the colour of the tiles underneath the hamper compared to the rest of the floor. So we are to believe Monica, the clean freak, never moves the hamper to clean the floor?

WorstBJever · 18/04/2023 20:46

I love Friends, but it really annoys me how Rachel was able to get on a flight without checking in, going through security or having a ticket. When she gets on the plane with her huge suitcase and goes on Ross's honeymoon! I can forgive all the rest (except maybe phoebe's positive pregnancy test straight after the being implanted) but that one is unforgiveable.

HurdyGurdy19 · 18/04/2023 20:47

It's never been explained, to my knowledge, how Phoebe and Monica became flatmates. It's referred to but not explained. Quite how two completely different characters even met and became friends is a mystery, but I can't imagine Monica actually inviting Phoebe to live with her!

electricmoccasins · 18/04/2023 20:49

Ross saying Carol was his first and only sexual partner, but then we find out about the old librarian whilst he was at college! Perhaps he just didn’t want to admit to it..
