Worst plot hole in Friends

I was home sick today, and having nothing to do this popped into my head and I can't get it out until I share it! The One With Chandler in a Box, where Monica injures her eye and has to go to the eye doctor. She and Rachel are gushing over how cute the on-call doctor is, only to find out that it is Richard's son. Really?! She honestly had no idea what her ex-boyfriend's son looked like? Granted she hadn't seen him in-person for a while, but Richard really had no photos of his kids in his apartment? That just seems too far fetched to me.

I spotted this last night as I watched The One In Barbados Part 2 and the wall listening is a plot hole.

They are supposedly listening to Joey and Rachel in one adjoining room to the left and Ross and Charlie to the right. BUT the right hand side must be a corridor - and it is because you see people leave that room and turn right.

It also can't be the case that Ross and Charlie's room is at the end of the corridor because the window in their room is also on the back wall in relation to the door. In other words, if their door was at the end of the corridor immeidatly outside Monica and Chandlers room, the window would be exactly where they are all listening.

chander monica phoebe eavesdrop ross through the wall lol

Ross didn't know at all

I saw the one where Pete takes Monica on their first date and as they're walking out the apartment door he tells her about the great little pizza place and then she shuts the door and the next thing they're in Italy. Surely she'd need her passport for that and would be very hungry having to wait a 6ish hour flight for dinner.

Ha ha, I always thought this!

And surely it would’ve been morning by the time they ate?!

Yes!

Ross with the spray tan is hilarious 😂.
I think Ross is one of those people who are brainy but have zero common sense.

Also Phoebe is my most hated character
She's not funny but can be mean.
And just blames everything on "living on the streets"

LaMaG · 01/06/2023 15:02

The fact that bugged me is that its all about New York but as far as I know they never went there, its all in LA studios. They didn't even try, not for 1 episode. Considering the money they were making, the sets and everything look fake and cheap.

LaMaG · 01/06/2023 15:04

And also, how did Rachel just get off the plane? Its not that simple wouldnt she get in trouble for delaying the flight cos all her luggage would have to come off. Did she even inform her Paris employer that she let them down, or her Mum who was supposed to be coming over for a bit of a holiday a few days later. I alwasy thought it would be better if she left and came home a few days later. She will forever resent not going!!

Yes Phoebe can be really nasty I think.
Something that does generally bug me about the series - this is something I think from re-watching it repeatedly over the years - is that lots of characters frequently say lines that are totally out of character just because it's funny.

Like Rachel is generally self-concious, polite and very agreeable. Even the fact she's a bit spoiled daddy's girl doesn't detract from that. When she first meets Charlie - the night of Joey's secret party on the roof and she goes in a dressing gown across the hall to tell the others that she can't go to the play - she says something to the others in front of Charlie's face like 'who's this'. Joey does it somewhere else - I think mayto brad pitt's character. It's just so rude and I don't think anyone really other than someone like Joey would say that sort of thing. Certainly not Rachel. There are lots of instances like this - can't think of any more right now - but they tend to get more and more out of character as the series progresses for laughts.

I’ve been rewatching Friends recently.

I find Phoebe intensely irritating and unlikeable. Everything about her irks me, her clothes, her affected faux stupidity, her constant wanging on about her life before…but then I hate ditsy women in general.

I find Phoebe intensely irritating and unlikeable.

That whole episode where she is actually working at the big chain massage place (do they really have such things) and makes Rachel rip up a voucher to go there and makes such a big deal of it , is really hypocritical and nasty.

Why would you make your friend give up a free gift when it obviously morally doesn't really matter to you?

I think the main reason she made Rachel rip up the voucher was because if Rachel went she would’ve realized Phoebe worked there

but yeah it was shitty of Phoebe to lie and act like she had some moral or social superiority over Rachel when she was benefiting from working there

I think phoebes change really happened when she was pregnant
before that she was the dippy well meaning friend but would occasionally mention something horrific about her life like it was no big deal
then when she was pregnant they gave her the mean streak and it’s like the writers decided that was funnier - almost like Phoebe is speaking for the audience calling the others out on their drama

I remember there’s an episode where Monica and Chandler are discussing how they first hooked up in London and Phoebe gleefully says “now tell him who you were REALLY looking for “
and Monica has to admit she was looking to shag Joey instead
like wtf Phoebe!!

WordtoYoMumma · 02/06/2023 22:26

I love Phoebe as a character but I think she'd be a really shit friend. The one where Ross is still married to Rachel and Phoebe says "professor and Mrs" and then "just kidding". What a dick move. But then they are all kinda dicks to each other throughout the series 😂 I still love it so much though

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 04/06/2023 13:09

One I’ve wondered about is M&C’s wedding. They agree in the earlier episode that they aren’t going to spend all Chandler’s money on a ‘fancy wedding’ cos they want a marriage (yawn). But the wedding looks pretty fancy to me!! So if that’s the small wedding what was the fancy one she didn’t have like??

SalmonEile · 10/06/2023 08:49

Clips from friends have started popping up on my Facebook feed - one is the episode where Chandler doesn’t cry

  1. I’m fairly sure he got teary when Ross asked both him and Joey to be his best men after the duck ate the engagement ring
  2. Phoebe talks about how much she cried after watching Bambi (just before her mother died) but in a much earlier episode she had no idea about sad movies because her mother used to stop them and tell her a different ending
Thirty5 · 10/06/2023 09:03

I loved friends growing up but it’s aged so badly, so many racist and homophonic slurs. So surprised at it looking back.
