Worst plot hole in Friends

I was home sick today, and having nothing to do this popped into my head and I can't get it out until I share it! The One With Chandler in a Box, where Monica injures her eye and has to go to the eye doctor. She and Rachel are gushing over how cute the on-call doctor is, only to find out that it is Richard's son. Really?! She honestly had no idea what her ex-boyfriend's son looked like? Granted she hadn't seen him in-person for a while, but Richard really had no photos of his kids in his apartment? That just seems too far fetched to me.

Ross and Rachel called their baby Emma when Ross's ex wife was called Emily.

Emma Geller.

Funnily enough when Ross and Rachel first started dating there was an episode where they were talking about their future and Ross said he has thought about children and if they had a girl maybe they could call her Emily 😆

This is very mundane but I'm always perplexed by how easily they can walk in and out of each other's workplaces. Even in the 90s the security wasn't that lax!

I dunno… he says something like ‘Anita was very gentle and tender’… 🤣

Mrs Altman

May she rest in peace 😂

Joey’s sister plot annoyed me too @Neodymium Also his sister who he lived with in LA in the spin-off had never been mentioned before. You’d think Dana would’ve confided in her own sister who was also a single parent, rather than a stranger who just happened to live with her brother.

Minniemouse85 · 18/04/2023 21:52

In the prom video episode chandler seems shocked when he sees the size of Monica’s swimming costume as if he had only just found out she use to be bigger but later theres an episode with flashbacks to when they are younger and he calls her fat which is why she ends up losing the weight (episode where she cuts his toe off) so he knew her when she was bigger!

RicciardoPerez · 18/04/2023 21:53

Phoebe speaks fluent French in season 10, but when she meets Monica's Sous chef in an earlier season, she doesn't know the meaning!

AlbertaWildRose · 18/04/2023 21:53

So many inconsistencies! Good thing it was so funny.

I didn’t know that Jewish people’s birthdays didn’t remain on set dates, that’s really interesting.

This is only if you follow the Hebrew calendar which doesn’t exactly coincide each year.

Joey and Chandler talk about watching Die Hard but then Bruce Willis pops up as Ross's girlfriends Dad

😂

Didn’t he start off in a comedy series? Moonlighting with Cybill Shepherd. Not seen it but sure it’s a comedy.

Sounds familiar. It's not his comic timing that's the problem though, he was just implausible.

Speaking of things that didn't work, not an inconsistency but Rachel and Joey.... awful.

RicciardoPerez · 18/04/2023 21:58

Oh and how quickly Ross got to England to chase after Emily, and also how quickly Mike got to Barbados after the phone call from Monica to tell him David was going to propose to Phoebe..

Similarly, Chandler talks about Elle MacPhearson in an early series, but doesn't appear to recognise the striking resemblance of Joey's roommate Janine.

I must admit you've made me snort with this one 🤣

Monica and Ross hardly seem very religious though. I mean I know they’re Jewish but they also celebrate Christmas every year and don’t seem to live a very religious lifestyle.

Kanaloa · 18/04/2023 22:04

Plus neither of them even have Jewish weddings - Monica and Chandler are married by Joey and I can’t remember 100% but I’m pretty sure neither of Ross’ weddings are traditionally Jewish. So it doesn’t seem like they’d follow the Hebrew calendar!

EmilyGilmoresSass · 18/04/2023 22:05

Off subject, but I find it sad that nowadays so many things would probably be left out of the show for fear of being offensive in some shape or form I reckon.

I thought that! I know they address Ross and the complexity of his Jewish identity in the holiday armadillo episode, but he really doesn't come off as a Hebrew calendar person!

mikado1 · 18/04/2023 22:08

Phoebe's brother Frank passes her busking in an earlier episode, and leaves a condom in her guitar case, but they don't seem to know each other!

Jumpersaurus · 18/04/2023 22:10

The NYE episode where Monica and Ross do their dance and the director asks them to do it again and tells a camera man to get it for the bloopers and then says 'that's a wrap'! Wrecks my head every time!

TwentysixV · 18/04/2023 22:10

When Monica and chandler are secretly meeting in the middle of the night and joey sees them they tell him it’s 9 am, and that it’s always dark at 9am but he always sleeps till noon. But he’s often there before they all go to work in the morning presumably before 9 and he sings “mornings here” with his neighbour. Too much of a stretch to believe joey has never got up before midday ever.

VerbenaGirl · 18/04/2023 22:17

That Emma, as a baby, needed virtually no attention at all. They were often in a different flat with just a monitor.

SalmonEile · 18/04/2023 22:19

There’s so many it’s unreal
definitely Monica and Chandlers history being rewritten is the worst for me - as if Chandler wouldn’t have brought up Monica cutting off his toe over the years and Chandler being the reason Monica lost so much weight never sat right with me
i know they did that alternate universe episode where Chandler fell in love with “fat Monica” anyway but it still didn’t feel like chandler would’ve loved Monica the way she was , considering how shallow he was in the early seasons

Ross and Rachel making such a fuss about Emma’s first birthday but not giving a shit that Ben wouldn’t be there ?
all they had to do was add a line “but you guys it’s already bad enough Ben can’t make it “
Also Chandler and Monica were a bit dickish about the whole thing considering how much Monica loves kids and Chandler wanted to be considered as an adoptive parent to Emma should Ross Rachel and Monica die

Joey suddenly being SO dumb in later series. See: Joey can’t speak French episode. I mean he was never the brightest crayon in the box but he didn’t start off quite so childlike!

They all end up as exaggerated caricatures of their original characters to be honest.

GlitchStitch · 18/04/2023 22:26

one that bugs me for consistency is when Joey has just kissed janine and goes to tell them what he has done ( having just returned in the previous episode from fake New Year’s party) it refers to Joey just having kissed her so it’s straight on from ep before but everyone is wearing different clothes and talking about a different time of day.

Yep and the Christmas tree has disappeared too and Christmas is over despite still being 2 weeks away earlier the same day.

Also in the flashback episode it is exactly a year until Barry and Rachel's wedding, and Ross finds out Carol is a lesbian and his marriage is over. But on Rachel's wedding day he is still moving things out of the marital home. What happened during that year?
