Worst plot hole in Friends

I was home sick today, and having nothing to do this popped into my head and I can't get it out until I share it! The One With Chandler in a Box, where Monica injures her eye and has to go to the eye doctor. She and Rachel are gushing over how cute the on-call doctor is, only to find out that it is Richard's son. Really?! She honestly had no idea what her ex-boyfriend's son looked like? Granted she hadn't seen him in-person for a while, but Richard really had no photos of his kids in his apartment? That just seems too far fetched to me.

Phoebe is an ardent animal rights activist and vegetarian. But apparently her dream clothing item she always wanted but could never buy for herself and they get for her baby shower is leather trousers.

Chandler and Monica don't know they are having twins but arrive home with them to a fully set up double buggy ready for two newborns.

🤯
I missed this!!!!

marshmallowsforbreakfast · 18/04/2023 20:54

When Phoebe had a positive pregnancy test five seconds after insemination.

It has always annoyed me that in the opening credits it always shows scenes from the show… however, season 1 opening credits shows Monica playing cards in Central Perk. I’ve never seen this scene and I have watched the show repeatedly!

Not a plot hole sorry but it frustrates me.

No Ross only "made out" with the librarian. I don't get the impression they had sex

Ross saying Carol was his first and only sexual partner, but then we find out about the old librarian whilst he was at college! Perhaps he just didn’t want to admit to it..

And when they're all telling secrets Chandler says Ross slept with the lady that cleans the dorm in college.

Rachel lists her sexual partners to Ross when they first start dating and there are only about 5. It's insinuated that she was fairly promiscuous as a young woman and they mention a lot more later on in the series!

from the very start, jelly fish episode prime example. They were meant to be

Yes, and in an early season (I think 2?) when Monica bumps Ben's head on the beam, then Ben keeps repeating what's apparently meant to be 'Monica Bang'...

...but sounds a lot like 'Monica Bing'!

Similarly, Chandler talks about Elle MacPhearson in an early series, but doesn't appear to recognise the striking resemblance of Joey's roommate Janine.

That was the script writers humour — same in the Big Bang Theory when they talk about wouldnt it be great to meet the woman that used to be Blossom on TV as she had a PhD in real life — and then Mayim Bialik arrives as Amy Farrah Fowler.

He got drunk and had sex with the lady that cleans the dorm in college though, he tried to say it was Chandler but Chandler says "that was you!"

I was about to mention the beam. It was there for that episode for Ben to bang his head and then never seen again!

It's never been explained, to my knowledge, how Phoebe and Monica became flatmates. It's referred to but not explained. Quite how two completely different characters even met and became friends is a mystery, but I can't imagine Monica actually inviting Phoebe to live with her!

Maybe it was a bit like the con artist who stole Monica's identity? Monica is a bit of a hero worshipper to cool girls.

Beezknees · 18/04/2023 21:01

The number of sisters that Joey has - sometimes it's 6 and sometimes it's 7.

Ross’s birthday also moves around a lot

well, he is Jewish, so it would...

I dunno… he says something like ‘Anita was very gentle and tender’… 🤣

Alargeoneplease89 · 18/04/2023 21:06

Monica having a secret messy room.

Joey and phoebe swapping intelligence, joey started off clever and phoebe was quite dim then by the end it swaps.

sadafteemove · 18/04/2023 21:10

Joey suddenly being SO dumb in later series. See: Joey can’t speak French episode. I mean he was never the brightest crayon in the box but he didn’t start off quite so childlike!

Joey and Chandler talk about watching Die Hard but then Bruce Willis pops up as Ross's girlfriends Dad

This is hardly a plot hole.

Bruce Willis wasn’t playing Bruce Willis, he was playing Paul Stevens!

I’ve seen this raised as a ‘plot hole’ before, and I just don’t get it.

Friends had loads of famous people guest star on the show - as characters though, not themselves.

The history behind Bruce appearing on the show is that he and Matthew Perry were filming The Whole Nine Yards together and made a bet as to whether it would be a box office success. If it was, Bruce would guest star on Friends.

katienana · 18/04/2023 21:12

I'm sure they talked about the beam in the reunion show, I think it got in the way of the cameras so they got rid of it

My2pence2day · 18/04/2023 21:13

Interesting what people are saying about Monica and Chandler, I always feel like she just settled for him, and in some ways him for her too. I don't really think they suited at all. Sorry!

Wait, Blossom was played by maximum bialik?

Mind. Blown.

Maximum? Oh dear, autocorrect. Oh dearie dearie me.

Love Actually, when Liam Neeson’s character has a crush on Claudia Schiffer, and then he meets a very attractive blonde called Carole.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 18/04/2023 21:16

Rachel and Chandler often portrayed as spoiled and rich, but not Monica and Ross, who lived in the same neighbourhood as Rachel, had a GM with a massive apartment in Manhattan and Ross and C attended the same college, Ross for grad. school too. The Geller parents also had a Porsche and beach house that they spent the wedding fund on and the same country club as R's parents.

pippinsleftleg · 18/04/2023 21:16

I’m pretty sure that it was implied (or said) that Ross was the Geller’s favourite child because they had trouble getting pregnant so he was their miracle baby, but another time they said they had to get married because Judy was pregnant.

RedEyeBaby · 18/04/2023 21:16

I actually thought Bruce Willis was all wrong for Friends. He's great in action films but I thought him unsuited to the sitcom.
