Worst plot hole in Friends

I was home sick today, and having nothing to do this popped into my head and I can't get it out until I share it! The One With Chandler in a Box, where Monica injures her eye and has to go to the eye doctor. She and Rachel are gushing over how cute the on-call doctor is, only to find out that it is Richard's son. Really?! She honestly had no idea what her ex-boyfriend's son looked like? Granted she hadn't seen him in-person for a while, but Richard really had no photos of his kids in his apartment? That just seems too far fetched to me.

the carol/ross/susan relationship bugged me

sorry but carol just waltzes in like she has evey right to put ross down every opportunity she gets-shes the ow yet we're meant to find it funny

if carol had cheated with a man noone would find it half as funny

Agree with that. That bit where they announce to Ross that they're cutting his name out and giving Ben Susan's surname is just hideous. I can't believe Ross actually managed to stay amicable with them after that.

whynotwhatknot · 09/05/2023 15:02

its awful isnt-and he just supposed to accept al this with humour

And it presents Susan as a total crazy person. What normal human would say ‘it’s my baby too’ about the baby of your girlfriend and her just divorced husband? It’s weirdo behaviour.

Just to add a couple...

When Phoebe has her first date with Mike, Ross upsets her by bringing up that she's never had a serious relationship. But what about David??? Arguably it wasn't a long term relationship, but it was definitely serious for her.

Also when Ross and Rachel take Emma to the park, and it's revealed that Ross is arachnophobic. He says something about there being such and such number of poisonous spiders. He means venomous, and Ross is exactly the kind of person that would be pedantic over the difference between poisonous and venomous (I'm very pedantic about this so it always really annoys me!)

There was an episode, quite early on, with a "peeper" looking into Monica and Rachel's apartment.

This makes me think of the "morning is here" singing guy who annoys Rachel singing too early when they swap apartments. Joey is like his best window buddy.

Never spoken of or seen before or since.

Also, later on when Monica and Chandler are trying to hide their relationship from everyone they comment Joey is never up before noon.

Not a plot hole for me - they went on a couple of dates before he moved to Minsk.

He reappeared once or twice for a night. It definitely didn’t constitute a long-term or serious relationship. I still think she should have ended up with him instead of Mike, as much as I like Mike.

I just watched the episode where Rachel and Phoebe go out after Emma was born, and Rachel gives Ross’s land line number to the guy in the bar.

So we then see Phoebe calling Mike from a mobile phone to tell him to go back into Ross’s apartment to intercept any calls. And we also see Rachel taking calls on a mobile in other episodes from her nanny, etc.

But we’re expected to believe Rachel would give Ross’s land line number over her own mobile number? That always seemed too contrived to me

SheilaFentiman · 09/05/2023 20:38

The nanny! There was the boy-nanny (Freddie Prince Junior?) and the girl-nanny (Melissa George) and we saw each of them for what, two episodes? And then they were never seen again despite Emma needing full time care.

To be fair you absolutely never see Emma. So maybe you never see the nanny because she is always out with Emma!

This.
The way they treated him always annoyed me, they behave like he cheated on her and that’s why they got divorced, not the other way round.

SargentSagittarius · 09/05/2023 21:10

If anyone, Gary the cop was a more serious relationship, since they moved in together, but even he didn’t constitute a long-term relationship (which is what Ross meant).

Flittingaboutagain · 09/05/2023 21:34

Didn't Gary and Phoebe almost move in? She was staying overnight with him then he shot a bird?

yellowsmileyface · 09/05/2023 23:05

Not a plot hole for me - they went on a couple of dates before he moved to Minsk.

That's true, but regardless of it being short term she had very real feelings for him. Whereas when she starts seeing Mike, I feel it's heavily implied she's only ever had casual, care-free flings, and that's why she gets upset.

Didn't Gary and Phoebe almost move in? She was staying overnight with him then he shot a bird?

This is also true! I'd actually forgotten about this. So IMO definitely a plot hole, because she has had some serious relationships. Maybe not super long-term, but they were definitely more than casual flings.

They did move in. They got a place in Brooklyn. Moved in, woke up to birds chirping, he shot the bird and it was over.

I just assumed they were talking about how they were looking forward to moving in during the bird scene.

I'm watching one right now and can't imagine where the balconies are. It makes no sense. I've been to see the building in real life and there aren't any. An odd building to choose for the exterior if they wanted balconies.

RicciardoPerez · 15/05/2023 10:59

Found one last night! Phoebe turned up at Monica's apartment when she was getting a massage. Phoebe said to Monica "you never let me massage you" with Monica advising she would be naked so would find it weird.

Yet, in early seasons, Phoebe says something along the lines of this is shaping up to be a bad year, it's already February and I've only given two massages which were the worst tippers ever. Monica responds with that was me and Ross, so she's already had massages from her!

WhyDoesItAlways · 15/05/2023 14:04

I saw the one where Pete takes Monica on their first date and as they're walking out the apartment door he tells her about the great little pizza place and then she shuts the door and the next thing they're in Italy. Surely she'd need her passport for that and would be very hungry having to wait a 6ish hour flight for dinner.

Wishimaywishimight · 15/05/2023 14:34

When Joey was going out with Kathy and was having trouble getting her a birthday present he said he had never gone out with anyone who had a birthday before. Chandler reminds him that he went out with Angela Delvecchio (sp?) for 3 years however when he is reading lines, for some acting job, with Rachel many years later (at the time they were about to get together) he tells Rachel the only time he was ever "in love" was with her. Surely he was in love with Angela if he was with her for 3 years?

ReasonsToBeCheerfull · 15/05/2023 20:59

Seriously? Do you not know any men that stay in relationships just for sex and giggles for a looong time because its convenient?
They are everywhere!

Not just this but in the episode where I think it’s Rachel’s birthday party or something, the nanny (Molly) takes Emma home. Joey follows her because he fancies her and he has been told he can’t “have” her. When Ross realises, he chases after him. Anyway, when he arrives back home, Molly’s girlfriend shows up and they both leave. But Ross was meant to be at the party, wasn’t he? Surely Molly’s job was to babysit!? Had she invited her gf to
babysit perhaps? Perhaps once Ross showed up she decided to do one and leave him with Emma? Maybe this is why hes so grumpy when he sees Rachel kissing Gavin?

I guess I still retain a little optimism (naivete?) even in my 50s 😆

As if Joey was with anyone for three years. Joey’s never been with anyone for three dates!

I love this thread so much!
The one that bugs be every time I watch (and I have re-watched Friends soooo many times!) Is the one where Ross gets a spray tan. Why does he need to count to 5 before turning? Why not just turn as soon as the sprays stop?

I've said that too!! Common sense and all that lol!!!

RicciardoPerez · 29/05/2023 12:31

I also don't get how Ross got to the gate to say bye to Emily. Surely he'd have to go through security and buy a ticket? Or is that a pre 9/11 thing? Might be actually as you see Ross and Phoebe buy a ticket to stop Rachel getting on the plane to Paris..

CremeEggThief · 29/05/2023 12:36

It was very normal to say goodbye at the gate in American airports before 2001, Ricciardo.
