Worst plot hole in Friends

I was home sick today, and having nothing to do this popped into my head and I can't get it out until I share it! The One With Chandler in a Box, where Monica injures her eye and has to go to the eye doctor. She and Rachel are gushing over how cute the on-call doctor is, only to find out that it is Richard's son. Really?! She honestly had no idea what her ex-boyfriend's son looked like? Granted she hadn't seen him in-person for a while, but Richard really had no photos of his kids in his apartment? That just seems too far fetched to me.

Also Monica and Chandler decide to start trying for a baby when Rachel is giving birth to Emma. But later on Monica says they've been trying for over a year so they need fertility tests. But Emma's first birthday is several episodes later.

Pickleontoast · 18/04/2023 22:32

Where does the window in Monica’s kitchen go to?

EhLov · 18/04/2023 22:35

Chandler kind of blurts out that he loves Monica twice, but Monica reacts to both like they're whole new surprises. I can't remember which one comes first.

Once, when she's dancing with the chicken on her head. He says 'you're so funny I love you' and she stops in surprise.

But then also he says to the whole gang 'I love her! I love her!' and she comes out of Joey's bathroom all surprised again.

Which is the actual first 'love her'?

I actually thought Bruce Willis was all wrong for Friends. He's great in action films but I thought him unsuited to the sitcom.

What about Moonlighting!

mewkins · 18/04/2023 22:42

CremeEggThief · 18/04/2023 20:26

Well, part of the answer to that one is Monica was left the tenancy of thr apartment by her grandma and it was still under strict rental control that kept the rent low, as far as I can remember, ToughOldTerf.

Yes this comes up a few times including in the very last episode.

DeadOrchid · 18/04/2023 22:40

What about Moonlighting!

Exactly.

I thought Bruce was great in the role of Elizabeth’s father - he’s meant to be an intimidating girlfriend’s father - who better to play the role?! And yes, he started out in comedy.

Maverickess · 18/04/2023 22:44

Most of them have already been said, but one that's really small but annoys me every time is when Rachel overhears Monica and Chandler on the phone (You know your nickname Mr.Big...) and Rachel screams and puts the phone down - how do they not hear her? 🤷🏼‍♀️

LadyVictoriaSponge · 18/04/2023 22:51

One that really really annoys me is when Monica and Chandler decide they are fed up with hosting thanksgiving and the rest of them beg them to continue. MONICA IS ALWAYS THE HOSTESS!! She would never complain about hosting! It’s mentioned continually through the series “I’m always the hostess”. It was so out of character it was ridiculous.

Merryoldgoat · 18/04/2023 22:54

In the one with the lasagnes you see Phoebe eating them although it’s expressly stated that they’re meat.

In the one where Monica Chandler and Joey reckon the jellyfish incident Chandler says ‘Sometimes at night I can still hear the screaming’ and Joey says he does it though the wall. It happened the fucking dat before!! I get hyperbole but it’s annoying AF.

This has ALWAYS pissed me off.

Agreed! She would have blasted their ears out!

The thing that has always bugged me is, Joey made such a HUGE deal about Chandler kissing Cathy and what a dreadful betrayal it was, but JOEY WAS ALREADY CHEATING ON HER! Bloody hypocrite.

ReasonsToBeCheerfull · 18/04/2023 23:05

The whole I Hate Rachel Club/The Hermaphrodite cheerleader from long island/sorry about your teeny weeny story line - it was implausible in SO many ways - not least that someone would write sorry about your teeny weeny when signing a year book, and if they did write it that she wouldn't have asked, and that Monica never mentioned it (the she was scared she would cry and show it to her was bullshit), and that Ross would form an I Hate Rachel Club and on and on and on.

Chandler not crying - he'd cried before and it was mentioned before

Ross's son Ben - where did he go and why was he never mentioned again.

Ursula/Phoebe - so much there it's hard to know where to begin.

Charlie getting together with Joey - he was thick. she dated noble prize winners. it was just so implausible.

Kvetching · 18/04/2023 23:07

Some of the guests actors - Bruce Willis, I have to switch off if it’s one of his episodes. Ditto Robin Williams and Billy Crystal, Winona Ryder and Sting’s wife. And don’t even get me started on the Brad Pitt episode. 🤮

But some were great - Ben Stiller, Alec Baldwin, Brooke Shields. Actually, just those.

ReasonsToBeCheerfull · 18/04/2023 23:08

& that episode where Phoebe wants to go to a Sting concert and just turns up randomly at Ben's school pretending to be the step mother Susan. I mean I know school security was more lax in the 1990s than it is now but still... and like she'd have never been to the school.

FallopianTubeTrain · 18/04/2023 23:14

The episode where Phoebe sings 'Monica, Monica, have a happy Hanukkah' Monica says that she's not even Jewish.

Ross then appears to be Jewish with the whole holiday armadillo thing.

8misskitty8 · 18/04/2023 23:18

@GlitchStitch he must have been still sleeping with carol during that year as he only finds out she’s pregnant after the start of the series !

Ooh don't forget George Clooney and Noah Wyle from ER as the the cute doctors! That's one of my favourite episodes.

Ross saying Carol was his first and only sexual partner, but then we find out about the old librarian whilst he was at college! Perhaps he just didn’t want to admit to it..

Yes! I always think about this when I watch friends 🤓

When Phoebe had a positive pregnancy test five seconds after insemination.

Didn’t she explain that by saying that her body has always worked quicker?

It’s Chandler who says he’s not Jewish when phoebe is trying out early versions of her Xmas song. She tries “Happy, happy Hanukkah, chandler and Monica” Chandler tells her he’s not Jewish and phoebe replies “So Ross doesn’t really decorate his tree with floss but you don’t hear him complaining, do you?”

Homer28 · 18/04/2023 23:35

Some of these are genuine plot holes but some are just bizarre (Bruce Willis lol).

Im also not sure if the Chandler/Rachel meeting would hold up as a plot hole either. Would it not be reasonable when Monica was doing introductions to forget that Rachel and Chandler had met at a couple of thanksgivings and 1 or 2 college parties the guts of 10 years prior? Monica would just be used to Chandler now as being part of the daily group life and forget that they had met. It wasn’t like he was in high school with them or grew up in the same area!

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 18/04/2023 21:36

Completely agree. It didn't work at all.

have u ever seen moonlighting not quite a sitcom but he was great at comedy

mine is phoebe speaking fluent french in the last season-previously when she met monicas sous chef she didnt know what sous meant

DixonD · 19/04/2023 00:04

I don’t understand why Monica and Chandler couldn’t try IVF to have a baby, given their issues. If she could carry a baby from a potential sperm donor, she could carry one made artificially using Chandler’s sperm. “Slow swimmers” don’t mean it can’t be used in IVF. I know this from my own experience! This was never explained.
