Worst plot hole in Friends

I was home sick today, and having nothing to do this popped into my head and I can't get it out until I share it! The One With Chandler in a Box, where Monica injures her eye and has to go to the eye doctor. She and Rachel are gushing over how cute the on-call doctor is, only to find out that it is Richard's son. Really?! She honestly had no idea what her ex-boyfriend's son looked like? Granted she hadn't seen him in-person for a while, but Richard really had no photos of his kids in his apartment? That just seems too far fetched to me.

Joey and Chandler talk about watching Die Hard but then Bruce Willis pops up as Ross's girlfriends Dad

This was a great story! BW lost a bet to Matthew Perry which is why he appeared on the show.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 18/04/2023 21:17

Also why do the Geller parents never mention their GCs or exDILs?

Just thought of another, more contradictions than plot hole…

Jack says he married Judy because she was pregnant with Ross. Judy says something such as ‘your dog thought my diaphragm was a chew toy’ implying they were using contraception.

But in a later series Jack says Ross was a medical marvel as they thought Judy was barren.

Kvetching · 18/04/2023 21:18

Rachel’s wardrobe when she was just a waitress. Highly unlikely.

Monica and Rachel being friends with someone like Phoebe, also implausible.

Emily’s Dick Van Dyke accent, when she had a perfectly good British accent of her own.

Soakitup37 · 18/04/2023 21:19

there are so many inconsistencies- especially in the early days, they didn’t consider that the show would be so popular and had to change things up. They all annoy me having watched the show a BAZZILION times. Early days the door apartment numbers change signaling they were higher in the apartment block, Rachel gets introduced to chandler at the beginning as if they’d never met but had a whole load of back stories.

referring to Bruce Willis and Elle macphearson then them being in the show. It flip flops when they have episodes which include Jean Claude van playing himself etc.

one that bugs me for consistency is when Joey has just kissed janine and goes to tell them what he has done ( having just returned in the previous episode from fake New Year’s party) it refers to Joey just having kissed her so it’s straight on from ep before but everyone is wearing different clothes and talking about a different time of day.
yeah I’ve seen this show too much.

👏🏻😂

But again - Bruce Willis wasn’t playing Bruce Willis…?!

What did people expect - for Joey and Chandler to break character and start fan-boying over Bruce?!

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 18/04/2023 21:20

Ben's disappearance is never explained

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 18/04/2023 21:20

Neither is C's willingness to financially carry Joey for years

I love Friends, but it really annoys me how Rachel was able to get on a flight without checking in, going through security or having a ticket. When she gets on the plane with her huge suitcase and goes on Ross's honeymoon! I can forgive all the rest (except maybe phoebe's positive pregnancy test straight after the being implanted) but that one is unforgiveable.

Rachel was through security - she had a stand-by ticket to get home and was waiting at a gate for an available seat. But I agree, how she was able to get on Ross' flight to Greece without a ticket does not make sense!

Oh and for ALL the faff they made of Phoebe meeting her family - father, ma AND bro none were anywhere near her wedding!

savoycabbage · 18/04/2023 21:25

Ross and Rachel called their baby Emma when Ross's ex wife was called Emily.

Emma Geller.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 18/04/2023 21:25

Why Frank is so stupid, but apparently attractive to a teacher who receives no comeback and whose resulting children are never mentioned

turnthebiglightoff · 18/04/2023 21:27

Danny to Rachel "do you sail"?
Rachel to Danny "no, but I support it"

Also Rachel ) teaches Joey how to sail (

It’s a bigger error that Rachel acts like she never met chandler before when they actually grew up together and spent thanksgiving together several times

And that Rachel kissed him at one of the college parties when Ross thought he’d first kissed her but he was actually Monicas mystery midnight kisser - her first kiss ever 😂

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 18/04/2023 21:31

I also get vvv annoyed that Emily is the typical posh girl brit stereotype!

Interesting what people are saying about Monica and Chandler, I always feel like she just settled for him, and in some ways him for her too. I don't really think they suited at all. Sorry!

I thought that at the time. Then last year I did a complete rewatch and saw a whole lot of things that I had not picked up on. There was a flirtation all the way through.

redyellowpinkbluegreen · 18/04/2023 21:33

I don't get why people have a problem with this - he wasn't there playing himself he was acting.

I actually thought Bruce Willis was all wrong for Friends. He's great in action films but I thought him unsuited to the sitcom.

Completely agree. It didn't work at all.

Rachel's boss (her uncle) says she is from Shropshire! They obviously changed it to London for the wedding because hardly anybody in the USA would know where Shropshire is.

Neodymium · 18/04/2023 21:38

Ross being angry that Rachel is dating when she is pregnant but then going on himself to date Mona.

not so much a plot hole just Ross is a twat.

I have seen an interview with one of the boys that played Ben. They were twins and they got more and more famous (and assuming more and more expensive) so that’s prob why they weren’t used.

it always bugged me that they all have their own families but never spend holidays with them. Like Joey has this huge family that all apparently adore him, but he doesn’t go home to spend thanksgiving with them? His sister got pregnant at the same time as Rachel and then she’s never mentioned again.

well, he is Jewish, so it would...

I didn’t know that Jewish people’s birthdays didn’t remain on set dates, that’s really interesting.

I'm Jewish and celebrate my birthday the same day each year. Not everyone follows the Hebrew calendar

Didn’t he start off in a comedy series? Moonlighting with Cybill Shepherd. Not seen it but sure it’s a comedy.
