FionnulaTheCooler · 31/03/2023 11:51

Yes, unless you're actually Jamaican and are wearing it ironically like the Tartan Army with their See You Jimmy hats.

Comii9 · 31/03/2023 11:53

@IVFNewbie what exactly are you wanting to represent OP?

SquashPenguin · 31/03/2023 11:53

tillytoodles1 · 31/03/2023 12:04

If I was Jamaican yes, if not then no. There's 1000's of different types of fancy dress stuff.

sunmonlight · 31/03/2023 12:05

Yes.

itsgettingweird · 31/03/2023 12:07

Having lunch at work. Just asked my Jamaican college who said No - it's not racism.

She said it's not treating the Jamaican community less favourably due to being Jamaican. It's just dressing up as a stereotypical Jamaican.

Boonata · 31/03/2023 12:09

If it's a fancy dress party you are allowed, as long as you are accompanied by a Jamaican wearing a pith helmet (a bowler is acceptable).

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/03/2023 12:10

I don't believe that it is racist, unless it is worn to belittle or deliberately offend someone of that race.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary;
Racist: someone who believes that their race makes them better, more intelligent, more moral, etc. than people of other races and who does or says unfair or harmful things as a result:

believe

1. to think that something is true, correct, or real: 2. to not believe that…
