Indeed. A fictitious Jewish family. Played by non Jewish actors who adopt Jewish mannerisms to appear Jewish. It's a comedy. The actors' job is to make the audience laugh by their portrayal of Jewish people.

Most of the actors were Jewish

No they're not. Look it up.

Thanks for your input all. I was curious as to what you'd think.

Why?

According to Black British people who are described as such.

Hang on wait and see if I can find that raised eyes emoticon and put a x2 in front of it. Hah....that will fix you....!

Well I’m Caribbean, like I said…why would British people want to be referred to that way? I’ve also never heard it used in the UK 💁🏽‍♀️

Democracies:
Ireland
Israel
UK

Dictatorships or autocracies with no free speech:
Saudi Arabia
Afghanistan
Iran
Syria
Yemen
Libya
Algeria
Somalia
etc....

Point me to a Muslim state that where people have the power to even question Islam let alone mock it.

Babe it was hypothetical. The point of whether or not mockery is ok is about the cultural predominance in society.

In a nutshell, it’s not ok to make a mockery of something in a country where it represents the ethnic minority. It’s chapter 1 in Racism for Dummies

MsJD · 31/03/2023 23:38

No, just a complete waste of 12.99

Jamhamlamb · 31/03/2023 23:41

Can you please let every single gift shop in the whole of the Caribbean know that it is racist. Thanks

They don't sell them where I'm from 🥴

The first place I saw them was in America.

Have you been to every Caribbean island?

Six pages of heated discussion with an overwhelming majority view that wearing the hat would be racist. And my post giving a clear parallel using FND got not a single word of support. Please consider this an example of what Jews face every day. That antisemitism really is the last acceptable prejudice.

Why not start your own thread to discuss if something is anti semitic? This thread asks a very specific question. Where does antisemitism come into it? And why should people respond to you if they came on the thread to respond to a picture of a "Rastafarian" Hat?

thegrain · 01/04/2023 10:38

I'd be interested in that thread I'm keen to learn more

I wouldn't wear it

You don't think blackface is racist as long as its done for fun?

No. And I've never found anyone who can explain what's racist about it.

My definition of racism is denigrating or harming others based on their race.

That various races have different skin tones and facial features is just a dry fact. Nothing racist about acknowledging that British natives look different to Kenyan natives to Indian natives to Japanese natives.

Racism is when you mock them in a nasty way for their differences. Or when you discriminate against them simply because they look different.

But merely dressing up as a person of a different race, and using makeup to complement the look is fine. Of course, as long as it's not done with the intention of mocking.

Crutcher · 01/04/2023 22:30

Butteryflakycrust83 · 31/03/2023 15:00

Someone elses culture/religion is not fancy dress.

Actually it is. That is exactly what 'fancy dress' is
Dressing up as someone you're not.

BignBootiful · 02/04/2023 00:09

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 31/03/2023 12:51

I presume you're going to a fancy dress party?
Then no it's not offensive.

If I - a black person - was at that party and saw a non black person wearing that I would feel very uncomfortable, especially if everyone was expecting me to laugh along because their black colleague told them it was ok.

HairyKitty · 03/04/2023 08:36

The difficulty here it seems from this thread is that is as well as being context dependent it’s also person dependent.

@BignBootiful or anyone else, would you find it uncomfortable/unsuitable in all situations? Or are there some scenarios you can think of where it would feel ok for a non Jamaican person to be wearing it?
Eg an event that was a celebration of Jamaican culture where you knew that those present were genuinely not racist people ie no chance of it being passive mocking? Or a carnival. What if the wearer was a black non Jamaican, does that make a difference?

MobilityCat · 03/04/2023 12:16

Just because someone says something is racist that doesn't make it racism.
Casual or indirect racismSubtle or ‘casual’ racism can also appear in the form of a ‘microaggression’. This is an intentional or unintentional offensive message that targets a person based entirely on their being a member of a minority group. Any form of racism is unacceptable, even a comment or an action that is subtle or occurs in a casual environment. It’s just not on.
Examples of casual racism include:

  • intentionally choosing not to sit next to a person because you feel uncomfortable about the colour of their skintelling a person of a different race who was born and raised in Australia that they speak ‘good English’making fun of someone’s background, even if it's disguised as a joke.
Direct racismThis type of racism is conscious and intentional – for example, someone writing a negative Instagram post about a particular ethnic group. Systemic racismThis type of racism occurs when organisations in our society such as the government, media companies, police, hospitals and schools discriminate against certain groups of people. This stems from institutions and power throughout history,

You mean the post about a show that you said you find brilliant and not offensive? 😂😂😂
Ok.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 03/04/2023 14:07

Also @Singingtherapy, as I pointed out with Father Ted which you seem to have blissfully ignored as the writer is Jewish, just as the writers of FT are Irish, I don't see it in the same way, as they're mocking themselves. But I'll say it again, seeing as you only want people to read your comments 6 pages in, but you don't want to read anyone else's.

I've never come across black face that’s complementary. Or taking advantage.

It doesn’t matter what you think btw. If the people who being mocked (intentionally or otherwise) say it is derogatory/racist, that’s the only info that should matter.

What about Friday night dinner. None of the cast are Jewish, yet the male characters wear skull caps for certain scenes and there's no denying that they 'Jewish up'. I'm Jewish btw and actually don't find it offensive, it's brilliant.

No one would bat an eyelid if someone wore a cross and played a christian father or bishop or minister, etc etc …

Friday Night Dinner’s Tamsin Greig says she ‘shouldn’t’ have played a Jewish mother

‘We are much more conscious today than we were when that show was first aired,’ said actor
