I’m assuming you are a white woman.

smooththecat · 31/03/2023 12:11

If you have to ask.

Having lunch at work. Just asked my Jamaican college who said No - it's not racism.

She said it's not treating the Jamaican community less favourably due to being Jamaican. It's just dressing up as a stereotypical Jamaican.

No it isn’t racist.

It depends I mean if a Jamaican person wore a Union Jack themed fancy dress would that be racist????

I'm sat with a Nigerian colleague so not Jamaican I asked him he said he would think it's just a
But of fun

Everyone has just gone overboard these days

Wedoronron · 31/03/2023 12:14

It might not be racist but it's inappropriate and fucking embarrassing.

If it's a fancy dress party you are allowed, as long as you are accompanied by a Jamaican wearing a pith helmet (a bowler is acceptable).

Well that’s that then.

Why did you ask a Nigerian person about it?

There's no connection.
Apart from similar colour skin.
Not very thoughtful.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 31/03/2023 12:18

i don't think so.. how is it different to dressing a load of kids up as bloody leprechauns etc for st patricks day (which is what I saw in the nursery when i dropped my daughter off

smizing · 31/03/2023 12:19

Leprechaun isn't a race. Leprechauns are mythical magical creatures. Black people are human beings who are systematically oppressed to the point that they have worse life outcomes on a population scale. Can you see the difference?

RichardHeed · 31/03/2023 12:21

It begs the question why would you even want to?

MobilityCat · 31/03/2023 12:21

Nothing about it is racist until some random person says it is. It suddenly puts the OP on the spot, which is emotional bullying.

SVRT19674 · 31/03/2023 12:21

No, it isn´t.

IAmInMeHoop · 31/03/2023 12:23

You can't actually think that's in any way the same thing?

Cinnamon23 · 31/03/2023 12:24

Yes.

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 31/03/2023 12:24

Dreadlocks are an important religious symbol for Rastafarians so I would say it's insensitive to wear them as fancy dress.

NewNameNigel · 31/03/2023 12:26

I feel like the op might be a black person who has seen this and feels uncomfortable and wants to say something to the person but is afraid to so is checking reactions here rather than a white person wearing it as fancy dress.

BellePeppa · 31/03/2023 12:27

Unless the party is held by a Jamaican insisting everyone goes dressed as a Rastafarian then yes I would give this a very wide berth.
