You don’t think the Irish have ever been oppressed?

They bloody well have!

Todaynotalways · 31/03/2023 12:57

If you are Jamaican, or of Jamaican heritage - I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

If you are not - yes, it'd be racist.

Frozendaquiri · 31/03/2023 12:57

A lot of people on here don't know the definition of racism and it shows.

"prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized."

It would not be racist simply to wear this (Cultural appropriation yes). But you could very easily put this on and use it in a display of racism.

Leprechaun isn't a race. Leprechauns are mythical magical creatures. Black people are human beings who are systematically oppressed to the point that they have worse life outcomes on a population scale. Can you see the difference?

Dreadlocks isn't a race!

MissMaple82 · 31/03/2023 12:59

It's merely a hair type.. there's nothing racist about it until you make it racist. Is a wig of rollers agist?? It's honestly pathetic

itsgettingweird · 31/03/2023 12:07

Having lunch at work. Just asked my Jamaican college who said No - it's not racism.

She said it's not treating the Jamaican community less favourably due to being Jamaican. It's just dressing up as a stereotypical Jamaican.

You know that the opinion of your Jamaican colleague isn't definitive, don't you? Just because they say it's ok doesn't make it so.

If I was your colleague and my workmates kept asking me to pronounce on issues like this I might not say anything but I'd be thinking quite a few things about them. But that's me (black British. Jamaican heritage).

Boonata · 31/03/2023 13:03

You could straighten the hair just to confuse accusations of cultural appropriation.

It must be exhausting for people to have to pronounce on issues like this for colleagues. As if all people with Jamaican heritage have the same opinion on everything anyway!

BignBootiful · 31/03/2023 13:08

I also want to add that you should remember that for some Jamaicans Rastafarianism is a religion, so from that point of view it might be quite offensive to those who experience it that way.

Why are you asking OP? Just bored? Hate posts like this without context, just meant to goad

i don't think so.. how is it different to dressing a load of kids up as bloody leprechauns etc for st patricks day (which is what I saw in the nursery when i dropped my daughter off

That's sounds hilarious and would have made me laugh 😂

Your Jamaican colleague does Jamaicans a disservice, the typical Jamaican does not wear dreadlocks 🙄

It's stupid stereotyping and normally worn as a 'joke'. I don't see what's funny about that look

Have you seen the videos where the guy asks Mexian people and Asian people whether his obviously targeted get up is racist and they all say no but all the white people say yes?

It depends I mean if a Jamaican person wore a Union Jack themed fancy dress would that be racist????

I'm sat with a Nigerian colleague so not Jamaican I asked him he said he would think it's just a
But of fun

Everyone has just gone overboard these days

Well a Union Jack is a flag, for starters. I can't even with the rest of your comment.

I feel like the op might be a black person who has seen this and feels uncomfortable and wants to say something to the person but is afraid to so is checking reactions here rather than a white person wearing it as fancy dress.

What a shame we'll never know as they won't say.

Or the Jamaican colleague is fed up of being the 'Jamaican' colleague and would just like to be a person at work instead of being asked to be the oracle on all things Jamaican and said whatever they thought the questioner wanted to hear knowing full well if they didnt it might turn into a long conversation they had absolutely no interesting in talking about

In much the same way upthread the Nigerian colleage is expected to be the expert on all things Jamaican, I presume because they are black.

Black people down owe their time or their opinions in order to educate their white colleagues. If that was their opinion then so be it and if that was their way of shutting their colleague up then so be it. But one Jamaican person should never be expected to make pronouncement on behalf of all Jamaican people just to satisfy a random colleague's curiosity

excellent point. I’m still gobsmacked over the ‘asking the Nigerian colleague’ one.

Bpickle1 · 31/03/2023 12:43

Not really sure if it’s as bad as people are saying. Have seen people saying that it tends to be white people who are more bothered by this sort of thing. There is a video of a man dressed up in fancy dress in China town asking white people if they think it’s racist they say yes. When asking Chinese people they love his fancy dress and say they do not think it’s racist. But that’s only a few peoples opinions.

Ok well I'm black Caribbean, and I think it's racist.

MissMaple82 · 31/03/2023 12:56

Why is it racist?

Not like it should be my job to educate you, but it is in the same way that you wouldn't 'dress up' as a Native American, or go to a fancy dress party in a sari.

But then again, maybe you would.

Me too - it's almost comical... as in, an actual joke by a risque comedian.

"Let me just ask my black colleague about the opinions of all black people ever, from anywhere, of any ethnic, religious or cultural background...".

It isn't cultural appropriation to wear a wig.

It is racist to 'dress up' as another culture to get some laughs. There is no other reason why someone would wear this. I've only even seen them used by people who think they're being funny. You only think another culture is funny if you look down on it.

I’m Afro Caribbean with a Jamaican father, hope that’s enough of a qualifier for you 😇

I feel quite justified in commenting on Caribbean stereotypes.
