Meanwhile on another thread, the majority of people think it's fine that a bunch of 6th formers are playing Cards Against Humanity at school....

Having lunch at work. Just asked my Jamaican college who said No - it's not racism.

She said it's not treating the Jamaican community less favourably due to being Jamaican. It's just dressing up as a stereotypical Jamaican.

I just asked my friend’s husband’s niece’s friend, who is Jamaican and she says it’s racist, so …

Every so often one thread or the other shows there are quite a number of ignorant, racists on MN, just like irl.

In an age where you can learn anything you want to, with the internet at the tips of your fingers, its staggering how fucking thick people are.

My neighbour 2 doors down is Jamaican. We're quite cordial and I don't think it's racist at all 🙄

Remmy123 · 31/03/2023 14:58

It's fancy dresss and no it's not racist

I was watching a First Nations Man on YouTube yesterday.
He said his heritage was not a fancy dress costume

Someone elses culture/religion is not fancy dress.

I don't see the connection whatsoever. Or the problem with them doing that.

You don’t think the Irish have ever been oppressed?

You seem to be saying Irish people are leprachauns. Surely not

I'm saying that the majority of people on that thread think it's ok to find humour in misogyny, rape, and child abuse because "it's just a game", whereas the majority of people in this thread are saying that the dressing up a as a Rastafarian is racist.

Why is one racist while the other is OK?

Remember that black man David Cameron said he had a word with? Well, I met him.

holaschicas · 31/03/2023 15:30

@FatAgain
The Irish aren’t allowed to feel oppressed or have racism towards them acknowledged…Irish slavery is rarely spoken about it’s only 100 years ago that signs outside establishments would read “no Jews, no blacks, no Irish”. The latter element is largely skirted over though…probably because a majority of the Irish race were white then. Racism twice fold.

What are you on about? Which sane person would find humour in the things you mentioned above? Anyone who does is sick.

There's a lot to unpick there, but if you can't tell the difference between a card game and dressing up as racist, culturally inappropriate stereotypes, I don't know what to tell you.
Impressive level of whataboutery, but no cigar.

Then educate me please, on why one is OK and the other isn't, and also what 'impressive levels about whataboutery, but no cigar means'.

@smizing are you familiar with the card game Cards Against Humanity?

Appleass · 31/03/2023 15:48

NO !

Notimeforaname · 31/03/2023 16:27

No. Not racism to me, its fancy dress.

I see people from all parts of the globe in my country wearing giant green hats with fake fuzzy red hair sticking out the sides. Also aprons to mimic a pot belly. I laugh every time I pass them they're just having fun.

Rastafarian is a religion. Would you dress up as a Muslim woman in the full gown and head wear?? (Sorry forgot the correct name).

Mocking someone's religion would be a potential sackable offensive in many work places. Let OP wear it for the laugh, upload on social media.... because if you were my colleague I would be emailing it to HR!

Comii9 · 31/03/2023 16:53

MissMaple82 · 31/03/2023 12:59

It's merely a hair type.. there's nothing racist about it until you make it racist. Is a wig of rollers agist?? It's honestly pathetic

Dreadlocks are not a hair type. Thank God for OP though because they clearly are a lot of uniformed people on this thread.

Google things if you don't know Christ. What type of hair do you have? "Dreadlocks"

It's a STYLE and it usually is linked to a RELIGION. Are we in 70s? Or 2023?

Wrong again. What does it matter?

I visited Jamaica a few years ago and lots of the Jamaican traders were selling stuff like this.
It’s a bit of a funny one, do you buy it to support the local population earning a living, or do you not buy it because it’s racist but then they lose out on a sale?

I’m Afro Caribbean with a Jamaican father, hope that’s enough of a qualifier for you 😇

I feel quite justified in commenting on Caribbean stereotypes.

i thought I thought the term 'Afro Caribbean' was no longer appropriate?
