No (half black if it makes a difference)

holaschicas · 31/03/2023 12:28

@IVFNewbie
What’s the OP being a white woman got to do with anything…are only white women rascit?

Context is everything isn’t it. It’s not racist in every situation, but it certainly is in some.

Anyone who says its not racist....would it be if the pale person wearing it darkened their skin with make up to complete the costume?

That would piss a lot of people off but you don't need to do blackface to wear the costume so they're different things

Boonata · 31/03/2023 12:35

For an unequivocal answer have you considered asking Kier Starmer?

Crutcher · 31/03/2023 12:36

No.

Personally I don't think using makeup to appear like a different race or nationality is racist either. As long as you're doing it for fun rather than to mock or belittle.

It depends I mean if a Jamaican person wore a Union Jack themed fancy dress would that be racist????

I'm sat with a Nigerian colleague so not Jamaican I asked him he said he would think it's just a
But of fun

Everyone has just gone overboard these days

Right because

A. Jamaican people cant be british

B. Because wearing union jack themed clothes is an important part of the british culture

Oh no wait....

What a ridiculous example

Perhaps Keir would be OK with it if the OP were identifying as Jamaican.

You don't think blackface is racist as long as its done for fun?

FredInYourHead · 31/03/2023 12:43

I'd say yes but Jamaican Dp thinks not. Would you wear a hijab as fancy dress?

Bpickle1 · 31/03/2023 12:43

Not really sure if it’s as bad as people are saying. Have seen people saying that it tends to be white people who are more bothered by this sort of thing. There is a video of a man dressed up in fancy dress in China town asking white people if they think it’s racist they say yes. When asking Chinese people they love his fancy dress and say they do not think it’s racist. But that’s only a few peoples opinions.

HeadNorth · 31/03/2023 12:45

Obviously.

For the record, I am white Scottish and give a side eye to 'see you Jimmy' hats. I assume anyone wearing one is a half wit, and the same applies to this.

I am a black woman (not that it gives me authority in making a judgement. Just fyi) and I think it is racist.

It is also hilarious. It made me laugh my head off (and I really needed a laugh!)

Please please please do not wear it. Otherwise you will be seen as a racist AND a laughing stock.

Leprechaun isn't a race. Leprechauns are mythical magical creatures. Black people are human beings who are systematically oppressed to the point that they have worse life outcomes on a population scale. Can you see the difference?

How do you know leprechauns don’t exist? I’ve spent my entire life chasing rainbows for one. Are you suggesting I’m wrong.

TeeBee · 31/03/2023 12:49

Nope, I'm not a white woman.

White man?

TheMatriarchy · 31/03/2023 12:50

If you have to ask the question, probably best not to go there.

You don’t think the Irish have ever been oppressed?

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 31/03/2023 12:51

I presume you're going to a fancy dress party?
Then no it's not offensive.

Having lunch at work. Just asked my Jamaican college who said No - it's not racism.

She said it's not treating the Jamaican community less favourably due to being Jamaican. It's just dressing up as a stereotypical Jamaican.

This is exactly how i viewed it but maybe me and your colleague are wrong when i see the many Yes answers here 🙈

SlashBeef · 31/03/2023 12:55

Not in my opinion, no. I'm trying to decide what it is, though.. I would probably assume the wearer was possibly a bit culturally insensitive and dim. I wouldn't jump straight to assuming they were a raging racist. It also looks naff and tacky.
Jamaican dad doesn't think it's racist but did laugh at it and says it's a bit embarrassing 🤷‍♀️

MissMaple82 · 31/03/2023 12:56
