Mocking someone's religion would be a potential sackable offensive in many work places.

Is it OK in the creative arts? Father Ted? Sister Act? I'm not being goady, I don't know.

It's quite evident you don't know the difference (sad really)

Would you dress up as a Muslim in a head scarf? It's fancy dress isn't it? Let's have a laugh...

OK, then rather than look down on me, educate me.

I'm talking about mocking religion.
Father Ted mocks catholicism. Is that OK? If so, why?

I wish on MN that people wouldn't leave responses like "you clearly don't understand thicko", and instead would explain their response.

i thought I thought the term 'Afro Caribbean' was no longer appropriate?

According to who? We still use it where I’m from 🙄

inky1991 · 31/03/2023 18:22

No it's not racist unless you are doing it to deliberately belittle that culture, which I highly doubt you are.

I think people really need to re-learn what racism actually is. If you're wearing it to a fancy dress party full of friends who aren't the type on people on Mumsnet you'll be fine.

Would you find it racist or cultural appropriation if a black man dressed as a Morris dancer for a fancy dress party? I wouldn't cause im normal.

Comii9 · 31/03/2023 19:05

@TheOrigRights I never called you thick. However you have joined this thread why exactly? If you are unaware perhaps don't comment.

It's not my responsibility to explain anything to you..
I read this time and time again. It's possible to learn you can read but as usual people speak upon what they don't know.

I'm sorry but I can't with people like you

gobbyshafto · 31/03/2023 19:12

Every university in the country has an Afro Caribbean society, still very much in use. People don't normally refer to themselves as Afro Caribbean unless they're dual heritage but nothing wrong with the term itself

I thought dictating to black people what they could and couldnt call themselves was no longer appropriate?

Sigh. Father Ted is an Irish show (Irish writers and actors), mocking the predominant religion in their country.

if there is a showing ‘mocking’ islam in a predominantly Muslim nation, or one mocking Judaism in a predominantly Jewish country, then it’s the same thing. Not offensive, but something for people ‘in on the joke’ to laugh at.

i can’t believe I even have to explain it.

And no, it’s no one’s job to educate you. Type some words into google or have a scroll on TikTok.

It’s weird how some people on this thread think something has to be universally considered racist by all people of all races before they would consider it racist.

According to Black British people who are described as such.

Hang on wait and see if I can find that raised eyes emoticon and put a x2 in front of it. Hah....that will fix you....!

Ah lovely, enforcing 'British' terminology onto black people on a global website. How very urm... colonial... of you

Democracies:
Ireland
Israel
UK

Dictatorships or autocracies with no free speech:
Saudi Arabia
Afghanistan
Iran
Syria
Yemen
Libya
Algeria
Somalia
etc....

Point me to a Muslim state that where people have the power to even question Islam let alone mock it.

In Britain

This however is a global website where you appear to be advocating for a poster who calls themself afro Caribbean to call themselves Black British without knowing which county they come from. Last time we insisted Black people call themselves British regardless of which country they were in wasn't really a good look for us...

Im not 14, Im also not stupid.

But good to know the 'I have black friends so I can tell Black people what to call themselves' argument is alive and well

Zuffe · 31/03/2023 20:53

Nope. That is not what I said. What I said was many people I know In Britain are uncomfortable with the term Afro Carribean when they identify quite rightly as British.

Are you trying to wheedle out now?

"Where are you from. No, where are you really from?"

Nope I never suggested you asked the poster where she was from

I suggested that on a global forum telling a poster she shouldn't call herself (Im assuming gender) an Afro Caribbean because Black British people dont like that was a tad colonial given you don't know where that poster was from

What about Friday night dinner. None of the cast are Jewish, yet the male characters wear skull caps for certain scenes and there's no denying that they 'Jewish up'. I'm Jewish btw and actually don't find it offensive, it's brilliant.

You mean Friday night dinner written by Robert Popper a Jewish man?

Maybe we are talking about a different friday night dinner here because the one I am talking about when I Google it literally says its about a British Jewish family?

Indeed. A fictitious Jewish family. Played by non Jewish actors who adopt Jewish mannerisms to appear Jewish. It's a comedy. The actors' job is to make the audience laugh by their portrayal of Jewish people.

Oh Im really sorry I totally misread your original post

I thought your issue was that the characters werent Jewish but were adopting Jewish dress etc, not that the cast werent Jewish, I'm sorry.

I get where you are coming from now
